probably one of my favorite bands from the last fifteen years. was thinking about doing a Feather Float vs Taiga poll but figured why not just include all their albums.

I will probably end up voting for FF but I'll hold off for a bit and if no one reps for the first album maybe I will vote for that...

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

I have never heard the first album - worth finding?. Feather Float is the best anyway.

atari era stylings of (seandalai), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I dig it, it shares a couple songs with FF but it has kind of a Trout Mask Replica feel to it tbh

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

(except that I like it more than TMR, mostly becuz P-We sounds like Ari Up)

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

ff is great but taiga is my favorite -- it was in my like top three on that pitchfork list.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

I saw that! Thats partly what made me finally check it out after meaning to for a long time, which in turn inspired this thread.

did drake invent yolo (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

i like the proggy/militaristic aspect of it, also that the first track is a cover of this:

Feather Float is great but I gotta go with Gold & Green, so glad Thrill Jockey reissued it. I also really dig the Shock City Shockers OOIOO remix album (Vol. 2). There is a live recording of the 1st 2004 US tour (LA gig I think) that isn't very good, but the time I saw them (2007? in Portland) they were great.

sleeve, Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

I only know Feather Float and Kila Kila Kila well enough to vote for, and I'd go for FF out of those.

emil.y, Sunday, 23 September 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

Kila Kila Kila and Armonico Hewa are the ones I haven't heard yet

ooooverrated

the late great, Sunday, 23 September 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

i regret the $100 i spent on this band

the late great, Sunday, 23 September 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

which one should i relisten to to change my mind

the late great, Sunday, 23 September 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

Im listening to Taiga and it def feels like the diffuse, proggy one whereas Feather Float feels like the bright artpoppy record (even though it has its diffuse moments)

Gold and Green would be another one methinks to return to, but I dont like it as much outside of Grow Sound Tree & maybe Mountain Book

yamamoto = 山本 = ~"mountain" + "book"...

kinda weird tribute to her ex-bandmate I guess (by covering his song with no credit other than a thinly-veiled title change/tribute)?

anyhoozzz kinda related marginally, but great version for da fanzzz.

lil queequeg (peter grasswich), Monday, 24 September 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

I just love "Be Sure to Loop", which is sort of my gold standard OOIOO for now at least, so Feather Float it is. I have fond memories of buying the first album for no reason other than I was enthralled with the cover art.

There's a new one! Sounds pretty cool:

OOIOO, band of the Boredoms' Yoshimi, has a new album out now. "Gamel" is built around the gamelan, a traditional Indonesian set of percussion instruments. The album was recorded by ZAK, a long time collaborator of bands such as Buffalo Daughter and The FIshmans.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:51 (eleven years ago)

maybe it's just me but there's kind of a slits-y vibe underpinning the gamelan stuff, esp. on that song xp

john wahey (NickB), Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:52 (eleven years ago)

there's also some 'you' era gong in places.

stirmonster, Thursday, 3 July 2014 21:05 (eleven years ago)

man, glad to see "Gold and Green" at the top. I kept trying to get into Feather Float, which is still great, but I always remember thinking Gold and Green provided better experiences overall.

I feel like these guys are really underrated, but I can't really say that because I haven't actually listened to that much. Need to get back on it.

,max,, Thursday, 3 July 2014 21:12 (eleven years ago)

maybe it's just me but there's kind of a slits-y vibe underpinning the gamelan stuff, esp. on that song xp

I listened to raincoats odyshape right after this one the other day and that paired well. production is nice and airy and spacious on both of em.

vinyl is def a nice thing to have. even has those classy plastic sleeves for the individual records.

original bgm, Thursday, 3 July 2014 22:07 (eleven years ago)

this is probably my favorite ooioo at this point. or maybe gold & green. but def one of those two.

original bgm, Thursday, 3 July 2014 22:08 (eleven years ago)

Listening to "Gamel" on vinyl right now. NICE! Drum circle halfway through side "A", with chorus of people chanting "Twee twee twee" and some sick buzzed out high freq synth flying in and out like a little electric bird. Spaced out gamelan ambient stuff is nice too. I saw some gamelan a few years ago at Emory University and it was a pretty transcendental experience, so I feel like this record is going to be amazing.

You can't go wrong w OOIOO (or any of the Boredoms for that matter).

soooo... new album “nijimusi” out on thrill jockey in january. but for whatever reason, you can listen to the whole thing on apple music right now. three track in and it rocks!

i've been psyched for this for a while - no way to order it from japan that i can find, sadly. this news might make me consider taking up that free 3 months apple music trial.

stirmonster, Sunday, 27 October 2019 15:01 (six years ago)

hey, i don't have any insights on the new material, but i thought i'd share a live set that i found on my personal google music library: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1iFadbf5C7ttgcj7FbBL4EibM4wj10zb9

it was recorded in chicago in the fall of 2004, so it's mostly kila kila kila material. if i remember correctly, i downloaded it from the thrill jockey website when they used to have a whole page for free downloads — mostly just a free track from whatever a band's current album was, but sometimes more substantial / exclusive stuff like this live set. the songs are not split up; it's just two long tracks. it's really good. hope you enjoy.
