Blur, clearly -- for Blur actually have songs I like. Gorillaz don't even have a note I like.

So anyhow, definitely Blur. Gorillaz are evil post modern ironists. Blur are also meant to be ironic but at least you can sing along and be happy when you hear Country House or Boys and Girls. Gorillaz, on the other hand, make me want to H-bomb London.

2) i heard half of the gorillaz album in the record store and it sounded really nice. the del track was murkily like pete rock, if i recall. another was dreamy drone-rock that all you hip folk seem to go mad for normally. possibly interesting side qn., while i understand the brits being tired of damon, him being the publically-accepted bearer of all that is Cool about Music or something, what's with you americans being all uptight? i mean, they're like madness or something. we're not exactly saturated with blur over here. the whole d(a)emonization of them sounds like anglophilia to me. and let it be said that if madness did an album with del and automator i would die.

17 tracks + "super-group" + rack (rap/rock) merger + "ooo, look - we're CLEVER" gimmick = scarily alluring. If only Dan the Automator weren't involved - I'd feel much better about dismissing it.

I think Blur will sadly be remembered for their more horrible moments (Song 2, Girls & Boys, Parklife) than their better (This Is A Low, Coffee & TV, Chemical World, On Your Own, Best Days etc). God I want to hear some stuff of theirs RIGHT NOW!
― dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)
That's because you fail to heed Flavor Flav's advice, and you BELIEVE THE HYPE!
I was a huge Blur fan for a while, hunting down their most elusive tracks by hook or by crook (this was pre-internet). However, unlike their more ardent supporters, I tend to prefer their earlier stuff (the rot set in circa Parklife). I'd sooner play Leisure than any of their last three albums.

Alex OTM re: singles
Some of the best b-sides ever were by Blur, IMHO. "I'm Fine", "Mace", "Day Upon Day", "Mr. Briggs"...
Although I too would not have expected this sort of thing from Alex. Well, thirty lashes on the gallows for me, I suppose.

The three good things Damon Albarn ever managed to do:
1) played keyboard on some Elastica tunes (Norman Balda and Dan Abnormal)
2) lost his hair (in 1992 he was sporting pudding-bowl haircut)
3)wrote some decent tunes (from Parklife, and Blur)
― pft, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)
dan abnormal was a (very good) blur song, off the (very good) great escape. his hair is practically irrelevant. by 'decent tunes' you clearly mean 'six very very good albums and one good one'.
my own bias aside, though, the amount of BS on this thread, mostly from americans who'd only heard about 3 blur songs (including song 2, which although a brilliantly successful pop song isn't very representative musically of what blur were capable), is astonishing.
― Just got offed, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)
And now Gorillaz is over, and it's all about the Blur and the band that has no actual name, supposedly.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)
parklife, blur and modern life is rubbish are good albums. the others are not.
