yep verlaine's on it...but it's sort of more flowing atmospheric in general, not a super guitar record or anything, but the arrangements and instrumentation is cool

her cover of "after the gold rush" is timely

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that was the only moment where my eyes rolled a little bit, the kiddy choir and the lyric change. but the rest of this is great, my ex-girlfriend keeps emailing me "BETTER THAN HORSES" and she appears to sincerely believe it.

sleeve, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

her voice has held up very well...i haven't listened to anything of hers in years

i am all about "constantine's dream." very dead can dance

reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

sooo do people rate her other 'patti smith is still alive' records

paradiastole, or the currifauel, otherwise called (thomp), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure 'look at mother nature on the run in the twenty-first century' doesn't originate with smith -- young sings it live maybe? -- that said, the children's choir is hard to blame anyone else for.

Gone Again is great, Peace & Love and Gung Ho are a bit uneven, Trampin' is good. All have worthwhile moments. I did not like Twelve (her "covers" album) at all.

oh my god this is the version of the song I heard on the radio, the cover is just excruciating

i like her Levi's advert

She has an NME front cover this week.

Liberian Girlkeeper (some dude), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 23:42 (thirteen years ago)

yes i know. it's horrendously awful. fulfills every cliche of twisting art into commercial 'cool'-ness

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

I quite enjoyed this on first listen a few months ago and then it sort of became my only listen. I should really go back to it.

Can't believe no one started a thread before now.

Matt DC, Thursday, 27 September 2012 10:03 (thirteen years ago)

Is that Patti Smith in the Levi's ad? Or just someone "channeling" Piss Factory? Not finding anything saying it is her. I hope it isn't her but ...

Loo Reading (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 27 September 2012 11:56 (thirteen years ago)

If that's not her (and surely there is no way she would do such a thing!), she surely has grounds to sue on the same basis Tom Waits did when Frito-Lay used a soundalike.

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 27 September 2012 12:18 (thirteen years ago)

Except, two things:

1) The TomWaits fakey ad featured Screaming Jay Hawkins being himself, but doing a Tom Waits song which means Tom can say no.

2) The PattiSmith soundalike is a bit close to her style/delivery, but isn't actually using her lines.

Mark G, Thursday, 27 September 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

Didn't realise the Frito-Lay ad used an actual Waits song - thought it was just a pastiche. What about the Opel ad Opel ad ?

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 27 September 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, what about the Opel ad Opel ad?

Eyeball Kicks, Thursday, 27 September 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, that SJHawkins one was for Levis. Funnily enough..

Tom Waits is opposed to his music, voice, name or picture being used in commercials. We at Levi Strauss & Co. have long admired Mr. Waits' work and respect his artistic integrity including his heartfelt views on the use of his music in commercials. From January to June 1993 Levi Strauss Europe authorized broadcasting in 17 countries a commercial for Levi's 501 jeans called "Procession". This commercial featured Tom Waits' song "Heart Attack and Vine" performed by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. We obtained the rights in good faith and were unaware of Mr. Waits' objections to such usage of his composition. We meant no offense to Mr. Waits and regret that "Heart Attack and Vine" was used against his wishes and that the commercial caused him embarrassment.[3]

Mark G, Thursday, 27 September 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

Wow, this album actually really is good to great. Two things struck me, even though the influence runs the other way. Kept being reminded of early to mid period Lida Husik (Mosaic particularly could totally be off of Joyride) and the spoken word bits remind me of the guys from Sonic Youth imitating Patti, which is odd. Sometimes it feels like she's channeling Lee Renaldo, and then you suddenly remember that it's the other way around. A few of the more poetic bits get a little too close to Jim Morrison for my liking, but nothing too horrible. The kids chorus on the last track isn't a great idea, but it doesn't ruin the song or anything.

She's definitely one of those people where I don't really believe it when somebody says her new album is good, so thank god for Spotify. This is definitely about 80% awesome.

dlp9001, Saturday, 29 September 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

There's no reason why her influences can't run in that direction though.

― reggie (qualmsley), Wednesday, September 26, 2012 11:00

Eh, this number starts off ok and then goes on and on, as Patti becomes more melodramatic and reminds me a bit of the long-ago Gilda Radner parody on Saturday Night Live. But despite that, I still like a lot of the album

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 October 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

two years pass...

is this the most recently active Patti Smith thread? Anyway, good new interview---although, despite her non-correction of the interviewer, there was a box set, with prev unreleased tracks, even. *Looked* legit; sure hope it was. http://www.thatericalper.com/2015/02/14/patti-smith-on-the-biggest-misconception-about-her/

dow, Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:47 (eleven years ago)

Genuine question: what is good about that interview? I saw Ned tweeted it as well - and I'm just baffled what's so good or note-worthy about it.

(Full disclosure: I do have an aversion to Patti Smith)

What's good about that interview is that Patti gives good answers, both down to earth and poetic - though if you don't like her I can see why you wouldn't enjoy it much.

I’m not a celebrity, I’m a worker. I’ve always worked. I was working before people read anything about me, and the day they stopped reading about me, I was doing even more work. And the idea that if you’re a mother, you’re not doing anything—it’s the hardest job there is, being a mother or father requires great sacrifice, discipline, selflessness, and to think that we weren’t doing anything while we were raising a son or daughter is appalling. It makes me understand why some human beings question their worth if they’re not making a huge amount of money or aren’t famous, and that’s not right.

Had the fortune of seeing her play the royal theater in copenhagen yesterday, there was a magical when fans of all ages could sit no more during the land recital and stormed the orchestral place in front of the stage

such a great artist, also has it been mentioned that Dream of Life is an all time artist doc?

also, don't know if I've brought this up before, I like banga a lot, but puzzled by the use of autotune on patti's glorious voice, would like to hear banga live

niels, Friday, 14 August 2015 10:05 (ten years ago)

there was a a magical moment

niels, Friday, 14 August 2015 10:06 (ten years ago)

I’m not a celebrity, I’m a worker.

If you have any interaction with her at all, try relating to her as per that advice - and see how you get on.

Patti's life has been all about joining the 'pantheon' and being recognised as an important artist, not single-mindedly doing her work.

I think this is my favourite Patti interview:

quixotic yet visceral (Bob Six), Friday, 14 August 2015 10:43 (ten years ago)

That's a cool interview, she's so young! Was reading Just Kids and would love to travel back in time and meet young Patti... also see 60s NY...

Totally agree abt her trying to join the pantheon she idolizes, and she's been successful right? She's doing that whole romantic Rimbaud thing, not many out there identifying with / exemplifying that idea of art/artistry

niels, Friday, 14 August 2015 10:58 (ten years ago)

I do like her expression when she says answers "Bob Dylan's a sexy guy" - she looks like she's shyly remembering a personal encounter.

quixotic yet visceral (Bob Six), Friday, 14 August 2015 11:16 (ten years ago)

Such a great interview. Her big bit at the end after the interviewer mentions Break on Through to the Other Side is hilarious.

Eyeball Kicks, Friday, 14 August 2015 11:56 (ten years ago)

Xxpost "that whole Romantic Rimbaud thing"

She wishes. Unless she's gun running in Ethiopia with a bad leg.
