Di Meola's intrigue with complex rhythmic syncopation, combined with provocative lyrical melodies always incorporate sophisticated harmony at the root of these serious but heartfelt works is central and foremost.

That sentence is like something you'd see on a standardized test's "true/false" section.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 28 September 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not sure punctuation would improve it.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 28 September 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i don't think it works no matter what you do to it. would like to see someone give it a shot, though.

alpine static, Friday, 28 September 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

lol I had mentally edited the second half so that it would make sense with a comma and semicolon added, but then I did so and realized it was still gibberish

You should see what he had to say about Paco DeLucia!

I bet Al Di Meola could punctuate it.

If you changed "incorporate" to "incorporating" and replaced "intrigue" with whatever the hell this dude actually meant, the sentence would still suck, but it might be comprehensible.

Dude sure likes his adjectives. Is there any type of syncopation other than rhythmic? I sorta get 'lyrical melodies' (as opposed to melodic lyrics?) but... And why serious 'but' heartfelt?

DiMeola's provocative melodies, sophisticated harmonies and complex syncopation are central to his serious, heartfelt works.

That still doesn't really say much of anything, but at least it's now half as long.

Oh, and I love how something (several things, actually!) can be both central and foremost.

eight years pass...

Chick Corea's passing got me listening to Return to Forever which got me listening to Al Di Meola. Like many of his fusion cohort, he is hokey and incredible in equal parts, sometimes simultaneously. I'm really liking Electric Rendezvous from '81 in particular.

I like his first three albums — "Flight Over Rio" from Elegant Gypsy could almost be a John Carpenter soundtrack at first, before going into some 70s-Zappa-parodying-Santana madness at about the two-minute mark. I've never listened to anything after that, though.

lol I was just trying to rewrite the review in the OP, and then realized I had done so 10 years ago. Once a proofreader, always a proofreader.

This just reminded me of when I worked as a radio DJ years ago, and a kid would call every night requesting "El Dimolio." It took me quite a while to figure it out.

whoa ... a revive on the exact 10-year anniversary of the OP? is that just coincidence or ... ?

anyway, nice to know what i was doing exactly a decade ago. i believe i read this while having lunch at a local Mexican restaurant. bean dip!

Forty-something years ago, I used to see ads on Buffalo TV for some sort of local Museum of African Art. The music used over a montage of mysterious masks and carvings was a minor-key snaky bass riff that always stuck in my head. Many years later, I was happy to discover that they used a section of music starting at 2:25 here:

The entire song is enough Di Meola for me. As a guitarist, he's fast and that's about it.
