― LaMonte, Monday, 1 October 2012 00:23 (thirteen years ago)
love Interpol, first two albums are brilliant, but I always resented their severe lack of material beyond the albums. I was excited to hear a bunch of unheard stuff but of course 2/3's of the bonus disc is already out there and the unheard stuff are just demos of songs we know. lame. Interpol may be one of the most inflexible bands that ever existed.
― spazzmatazz, Monday, 1 October 2012 00:24 (thirteen years ago)
What's there to resent? At the time it sounded like they were only good for a couple albums.
― taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 October 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)
i resent that the songs they wrote are so brilliant and there's virtually no b-material. less than half-a-dozen non-album tracks for totbl and antics. also, they never re-arrange or change the songs at all live, so if you've heard one interpol show, you've heard em all to a certain extent. the fuel to really get into them is limited, and that's frustrating and annoying because of how good those two records are. and, paul banks 2000-2005 was one of the coolest motherfuckers alive.

antics is a dud, but totbl is really good. still don't know why they abondoned the kind of post-rockish instrumental passages they had on the first record.
― LaMonte, Monday, 1 October 2012 00:48 (thirteen years ago)
I'm still a firm believer in the 20 year cycle of musical fashion which says that stuff from 10 years ago is unfairly zingworthy - a lot of people who liked this album first time round are 30ish and very different people now and will reflexively slag it to distance themselves from their own pasts. It'll be a few years before we get a fair reappraisal of this era (remember how uncool the 80's was in the 90's, after all). I'll readily admit to going on a corny indie binge when Pitchfork did that poll a few weeks ago and reminded me of a lot of this stuff.
At the time it sounded like they were only good for a couple albums.
This is my problem with a lot of bands of that era, where they hit gold with a very specific sound on their first album, then continued to diminishing returns on their second album, then realise they had to change it up on their third album and bombed.

I like all of Interpol's albums, but they were ungodly boring live.
― 誤訳侮辱, Monday, 1 October 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)
The second comment on there is kinda roffly.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 October 2012 02:00 (thirteen years ago)
Every seven or eight months I'll get hate mail about an impolite review I wrote of the third album.

i gave it a rave review ten years ago!

Allow me to chime in as a thirty one year old asshole, please.
<chime>No, they were nauseatingly derivative and terrible back then and they're even worse in hindsight. </chime>
How are they still a thing?
― Austin, Monday, 1 October 2012 02:44 (thirteen years ago)
they're not really
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 October 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)
I saw them right before this came out or around the time it came out at Bottom Of The Hill in SF and they were really great live. Never bought another cd by them though.
― svend, Monday, 1 October 2012 03:06 (thirteen years ago)
I never noticed what an awful album cover that is. It's a picture of some lights and a wall and somebody sloppily painted some red on top of it in photoshop but didn't go all the way to the edges?
― wk, Monday, 1 October 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)
p sure its a grey or white wall washed with red filters on the lights above
