There's something very amusing about Adele's Bond theme (which should have been a complete commercial no-brainer) being kept off the top spot by Swedish House Mafia.

I suspect said amusement would swiftly abate upon actually listening to the Swedish House Mafia track in question.

Well they released it on a Friday, which just seems boneheaded because you that first initial burst of enthusiasm is wasted chart-wise (and there was LOTS of enthusiasm; Skyfall went to #4 on the strength of just 2 days of sales)

people bought crazy frog precisely to stop Coldplay getting to #1. Same with Mr Blobby & Take That.

Ten years later people still remember Crazy Frog, while you'll have to search far and wide to find someone who remembers what Coldplay song it fought off.

this wasn't a dethronement, but i found it hilarious when "tik tok" blocked "bad romance" from the top week after week.

oh and there was that year that people bought "killing in the name" to prevent (successfully) xfactor from snagging the christmas number one for the millionth time. of course the winner's single ended up replacing it the very next week.

also personally i am a fan of whigfield's "saturday night" dethroning "love is all around" after it was #1 for 15 weeks
