I've never really understood getting excited over compilations, unless the music's unavailable elsewhere - but this one, from 1991, was spectacular. Round my school anyway.

and another vote for another girl another planet

I inherited a copy of this off my older brother. Some great stuff on it.

another girl

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 07:31 (twelve years ago) link

i heard echo beach in barnes & noble today (but i was downtown)

squeeze is on the cover but not in the list

probably the only songs that got played contemporaneously with release in my suburb were "turning japanese" and "call me," though "pretty in pink" hit later. maybe "oliver's army."

I remember this compilation - it was advertised on TV a lot iirc. Voted "Reward" cos nobody else will, and it still sounds like a blast of fresh air.

Rob M Revisited, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 09:01 (twelve years ago) link

Ha yeah xp, what's with Squeeze being on the cover rather than the Rats? It must've been a late substitution.

I think I'll vote for Call Me. It's very much not of the scene that this comp is aimed at covering, but it's a real cracker and I don't think I'd've paid it any heed if it hadn't been on here.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 09:49 (twelve years ago) link

Difficult. I like every one of these songs, with the exception of the Geldof one. I think Do Anything You Wanna Do gets my vote, because to me it sounds the freshest of the bunch.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 09:51 (twelve years ago) link

To this day I've still never heard another Martha & the Muffins song

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 09:54 (twelve years ago) link

Reward is probably the only song I'd actually want to listen to. Maybe Ant Music.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:09 (twelve years ago) link

Ant Music would be a lot of fun to hear on the radio out of the blue. Would imagine that most of the rest are still in steady rotation somewhere on BBC radio.

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:21 (twelve years ago) link

Wow, I remember getting this out from the local library in 1995 (along with a couple of other, similar punk/new wave comps). Going with '...Rhythm Stick' today - at the time I probably would have said 'Eton Rifles'.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:23 (twelve years ago) link

Echo Beach is my favourite but so many of these are just all time.

Hate Oliver's Army though, that one can fuck off. As can The Jam.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:24 (twelve years ago) link

The two duds here for me are the Boomtown Twats and The Vapors, 'Turning Japanese' is so awful.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:28 (twelve years ago) link

Everything on here is classic imo, bur voting Reward 'cause it was the first single I bought. Which version of Pretty in Pink is it? Probably the soundtrack one with the horrendous saxophone.

I got the Boyzone, I got the remedy (ledge), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:42 (twelve years ago) link

went for 2-4-6-8 Motorway, but really these songs are so classic that they've past into the overplayed zone for me and I'm desensitised to the majority of them now.

This Is... The Police (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:52 (twelve years ago) link

I doubt its the soundtrack one, sure this comp predated it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

Fillm was '86, comp is '91.

Voted Furs, but could have just as easily voted for literally half the things on here.

Never heard of the comp, but it sounds like the perfect disc to have in the car.

I had this on tape!

This may well have been my introduction to the wonderful world of "punk" music.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 13:07 (twelve years ago) link

Sounds like a pocket version of Rhino's DiY series, actually.

my job is very boring, I'm an office clerk

Oh shit, it IS the original Pretty In Pink on here, isn't it? Voted w/o considering that...

Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick slightly ahead of Ant Music.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 13:21 (twelve years ago) link

I was wondering if this comp was somehow responsible for the late-90s ubiquity of "Call Me" over any of Blondie's bigger hits, but then the internet told me that in the US "Call Me" had been their biggest hit all along, so, eh.

According to what.cd (where both versions are available for download), there was also a New Zealand edition of this comp with a somewhat different track listing.

1 Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Oliver's Army
2 Adam And The Ants - Antmusic
3 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Geno
4 Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)
5 Only Ones, The - Another Girl Another Planet
6 Pretenders, The - Brass In Pocket
7 Altered Images - Don't Talk To Me About Love
8 Jam, The - The Eton Rifles
9 Ian Dury And The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
10 Blondie - Call Me
11 Clash, The - Brand New Cadillac
12 Romeo Void - Never Say Never
13 Psychedelic Furs, The - Pretty In Pink
14 Stranglers, The - No More Heroes (Live)
15 Vapors, The - Turning Japanese
16 Gary Myrick & The Figures - She Talks In Stereo
17 Blam Blam Blam - There Is No Depression In New Zealand

xpost

I wouldn't even have Call Me in my Top 10 Blondie singles, and probably not even Top 20 Blondie tracks overall.

Altered Images, it's gotta be

xp Mmmm maybe Buzzcocks on the NZ version

how random is Brand New Cadillac on the NZ version?

To this day I've still never heard another Martha & the Muffins song

i remember hearing danceparc way more than echo beach for some reason-but only those two songs. otherwise, i only remember mojo nixon's 'stuffin martha's muffin.'

uh, i think this is either "ant music" or "pretty in pink," if it's the original version of "pretty in pink." "ever fallen in love," "teenage kicks," "another girl," dury, "happy birthday," - they're all great but somehow don't need my accolades.

you all a buncha takers (say the sad bells of romney) (Hunt3r), Monday, 8 October 2012 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

I'll go with Dury; the sound of that guttural geezer helling around the suburbs with your rhythm stick is still warming. I wanna read Will Birch's bio too (somebody mentioned it on ILB)

i was 6 in '91 but i ended up with my brother's copy

it led to my purchasing a copy of 'the sound of the suburbs - a collection of the members' finest moments' in an hmv sale

that was not a good investment

that said, i would probably have voted for the eponymous track, which i remember fondly

also oliver's army is one of the finest records ever made by anyone but i can't really contest it getting only one vote in this company, for these purposes

If that had "Offshore Banking Business", then it was worth getting.
