What even is this thing?http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/bbc/9579951/BBC-working-on-music-equivalent-of-iPlayer.html
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:12 (twelve years ago) link
difficult to discern through the fug of cliches about "the state of the music biz". If the Beeb can pull something off using their archive that would be pretty amazing, though.
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 10:29 (twelve years ago) link
ha was this prompted in any way by the guy who put all of John Peel up on Soundcloud?
― fish frosch (seandalai), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 11:12 (twelve years ago) link
I would be very surprised if this was just general recorded music, it'll surely be a way of opening up the BBC archive. Peel sessions, Maida Vale, Radio 3 performances, maybe some old gig broadcasts, that sort of thing.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 11:22 (twelve years ago) link
Radio 3 archive wd be incredible. couldn't give one about owt else
― vegetarian beef (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 11:24 (twelve years ago) link
"all of John Peel up on Soundcloud"? Really, ALL of it? Is it still there or taken down?
― SimianBoffin, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 22:45 (twelve years ago) link
Not all, a handful each from several years. Currently here: http://www.peel.mooo.com/peelgroup/BillfromNorthWales/01%20John%20Peel/

it's launched

more to come (recommendations, mainly)
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 13:21 (eleven years ago) link
don't see much of value in this yet but let's see
― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 13:29 (eleven years ago) link
there's also a spotify app, with playlists from shows and presenters
http://open.spotify.com/app/playlister
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 13:39 (eleven years ago) link
This looks like it will be great in time but doesn't strike me as hugely intuitive at present.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 13:58 (eleven years ago) link
the reviews are rolling in!!
3. Filthy Phil 3 HOURS AGOThis is an absolute disgrace. Complete waste of PUBLIC MONEY. I have paid for this rubbish. In times of osterity, these Eton-educated poshboys are sauntering around wasting money when they should be using what little we have on pressing matter like securing our boarders!

Filthy Phil OTM

haven't the Beeb announced they're gonna do some "iPlayer first" programming too? just take the fucking licence money off them now imo
― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 17:17 (eleven years ago) link
what's wrong w/that? they're just trying to give iPlayer a few exclusives, Netflix style
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 17:28 (eleven years ago) link
seems sucky and gimmicky from an organization which isn't relying on subscriptions like Netflix does
― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago) link
it's not like they're going to delay episodes of Doctor Who until Sunday or something!
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 17:35 (eleven years ago) link
i dunno i feel bad for confused old people who feel like they're missing out also maybe instead of spending money fannying about on stuff like this they cd improve the quality of their regular programming a tad
― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 17:37 (eleven years ago) link
don't think this is really aimed at old people; more like young people who don't have TV sets and for who the idea of scheduled programming is like something from the wristwatch era.
― stet, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 17:42 (eleven years ago) link
i dont think it has anything to with scheduling, or elision of
aiui the beeb is trying to max its human capital and cement itself as tastemaker by aligning itself directly with music platforms as opposed to competing with them
altho the fact us nyerds are dimly pondering the whys and wherefores probably means its mission statement is already fatally opaque - "Presenter Playlists are coming soon", nuh uh you only get one shot at unveiling this
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 18:22 (eleven years ago) link
Ah no I was talking abt iPlayer Premieres, which are difft from that. This is the idea that some progs will be available to watch on iPlayer before TV
― stet, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 18:47 (eleven years ago) link
don't think this is really aimed at old people; more like young people who don't have TV sets
and who probably don't don't pay their licence fee either grumble grumble </daily mail>

― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 19:27 (eleven years ago) link
Haven't they already started iPlayer premieres? I thought the first ep of the second series of Some Girls was online before it was on BBC3?
― Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago) link
you might be right but then it's BBC3 and i'd call for the execution of everybody responsible but i'm v. tired
― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 19:39 (eleven years ago) link
yeah that has been going on in a limited fashion for like a year already
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:56 (eleven years ago) link
r|t|c while "presenter playlists" won't come for another six weeks or so, the spotify app already has a few followable playlists like Radio 1 track of the day, an Annie Mac chillout playlist, a companion playlist to the Nile Rodgers doc, etc
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 10 October 2013 08:56 (eleven years ago) link
Presenter Playlists are coming soon", nuh uh you only get one shot at unveiling this
Haha you remember the iPlayer launch right? All that messing around with downloads and DRM?
― Matt DC, Thursday, 10 October 2013 09:02 (eleven years ago) link
I suppose this thing's most useful application would be as a way to easily download 1xtra sets or Radio 3 performances to yr phone but I'm not sure if that's even in the plan. I know there's a a BBC Radio app already but it's cobblers.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 10 October 2013 09:04 (eleven years ago) link
you can already hear back 1xtra sets or radio 3 performances via catch-up or clips
they won't be part of this though cause spotify doesn't have that stuff innit
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 10 October 2013 09:58 (eleven years ago) link
i was only ever interested in the prospect of Radio 3 archive downloads
recommendations of the most obvious pop music in the world by moron DJs who wdn't get a job at Costa Coffee irl i'm less interested in
― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 10 October 2013 10:45 (eleven years ago) link
come off it bossman, ur better than that
― r|t|c, Thursday, 10 October 2013 11:39 (eleven years ago) link
The Spotify export function is pretty neat actually. Whole thing needs a mobile app though, although I assume that's coming.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 10 October 2013 11:49 (eleven years ago) link
xp
forgot 1 Xtra existed for a minute there
― I like to tackle hard and am crazy (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 10 October 2013 11:53 (eleven years ago) link
Like as an archive resource it has minimal value and I'm not sure that's the point of it, but as a way of bookmarking stuff you hear on the radio it's pretty useful.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 10 October 2013 11:53 (eleven years ago) link
the way i imagined this working was... punter listens to annie mac or whatever, hears some bits; instead of having to then find his/her own way in the world there's now a semi-self-curated one-click playlist ecology to hear again & purchase outside of the show; beeb is less isolated and more involved with the world by being less reliant on functional closed radio ecosystem
idk tbf i'd like to think there was punter consultation involved along the line instead of alien weirdos like me trying to imagine what they want

ur calumny applies better to 1x than it does r1 right now for the most part imho
― r|t|c, Thursday, 10 October 2013 11:59 (eleven years ago) link
actually nah i'm being harsh, current 1x playlist is quite interesting now i study it
― r|t|c, Thursday, 10 October 2013 12:02 (eleven years ago) link
lol no wait scratch that and return to og sentiment, turns out it's 70% of the r1 playlist

i still only really listen to 3, 4 & 5. but i did have a really shitty class just before i posted this morning.
