1967-1979 WTF - The Hard 'n' Heavy 'n' Loud + Krautrock, Arty, Noisy, Weird, Funky, Punky Shit - Albums Poll! Nominations ! (ends Oct 15)

Ok after some serious discussions.. we have decided to do a rock rather than all-genre poll as a result of the vote in the poll. But we want to do something slightly different.
So we came up with a 1967-1979 'albums that rock poll' With some basically weird and under-appreciated stuff that we combined successfully in the 80s poll.
But there's no way we can replicate the 80s rock poll. But we have a small list* of the types of bands we're after and also there is a spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AumbddEHET5xdEZaQ0paMUZpNEdGeUdRSGRTY3BfV2c#gid=0 that has most of the previous nominations list plus some we came up with to try define what we're after but it is in no way complete.

*Sabbath, Funkadelic ,Pentagram, skotrok, Link Wray, Sonics, Parliament, Throbbing Gristle, Chrome, Neu, Blue Cheer, Silver Apples, Yoko Ono, Hendrix, AC/DC, Residents, Suicide, Pistols, Pere Ubu, Hawkwind,Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Wire Plus as you will see in the spreadsheet some genres that do kind of get ignored in perhaps more mainstream lists:Prog-Rock (harder kind) Funk, Krautrock, minimalism, the fucking weird avant rock stuff, industrial,N0-wave,proto punk, post-punk, early goth, garage-y rock, heavier psychedelic/spacerock.

What we're not really after are the : Dead or Floyd or Elvis Costello, most singer-songwriter , soft prog, Eagles, Jackson Brown, etc. BUT we decided we might allow a few Floyd albums, a couple of Stones and 1 Springsteen album. But we are after something a bit different from a typical poll.

Why 67? Well a lot of really influential rock came out then and, well, cuz i say so! but hellhouse puts it better

'67 was to include surf, garage, Link Wray, and other "modern" stuff that might otherwise just miss the cut, and kind of avoid the cliched 70s poll feeling.

As hellhouse also said

The 70s have been so done-to-death re: polls that the poll has intentionally taken a turn to the weird and embraced a kind of revisionist but valid hard + funky + weird + noisy birth-o'-modern-rock perspective stretching from 67-79.

I realise to many it will seem to be very arbitrary and bizarre and frankly fucked up. Well, it is. But it should mean the results are different from other polls and at the end of the day, it makes sense to us! So we ask you to play along and join in the fun. Don't have any expectations and nominate anything you think might fit and we will add to the list what does. Don't be upset if you get a knockback but don't be scared to nominate. You do stand a better chance with more obscure albums,as the best thing about the polls are to introduce lesser known gems.
Campaigning on the nominations and voting threads are Key. This helps highlight albums and others will check them out and get voted on.

Nominations will end Next Monday Oct 15 unless others ask for more time as they explore their collections.

Whatever happens it is all down to all the ilxors who vote. You will decide how the poll turns out. But the emphasis should be on what 'rocks'. But clearly some have differing ideas on what rocks. It will be up to you to decide when voting, but we can use this thread to decide the kind of albums you want to vote for and if you purely go for the heaviest albums that will be fine. It will be entirely up to you all to decide how to vote for upto 100 albums. But feel free to use this thread to reach consensus onwhat you think people should vote for plus campaign for albums.
There will be a spotify playlist and balls will be starting a separate tracks poll to go with this (thanks balls for the help!)

And in a final twist .... we think that there should be a 3 album vote limit for a band/artist so to avoid top 10s with the same bands in it like with Sonic Youth in the 80s poll. Do you agree with that or want no limits?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 8 October 2012 00:58 (twelve years ago)

And as requested on the vote thread the subtext can be
'into the void: ilx 67-79 rawk poll - metal, punk, buttrock, acid burnouts, aor and more. rip lester bangs'

Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 8 October 2012 01:00 (twelve years ago)

How do you decide which albums to include? Run a mini-poll?

fish frosch (seandalai), Monday, 8 October 2012 01:03 (twelve years ago)

Sorry, misread that as a 3 album nomination limit. Carry on.

poll specs are v. interesting and exciting and should throw up some wild and wonderful sounds. i totally agree with the 3 album limit and am delighted it has been extended to 1967 as so much music that fits here came out in that period.

here's some. mexico and brazil were most definitely absorbing rock influences from the late 60s onwards and adding their own twist. all of these albums most definitely fit the various required criteria. some are well known, some not but i'd happily evangelise for each and every one of them -

Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes

Secos & Molhados - 1st Album
Rita Lee - Build Up
La Revolución de Emiliano Zapata - ST
Los Dug Dugs - Dug Dugs

The stuff I have not heard I will need to trust you all that it fits the criteria. But someone will still likely check them out to be sure!

Are these 3 rock? well, there's no guitars but the noise & energy blast that is the Brötzmann is balls out rock. Albert Ayler's rhythm section is definitely rocking out on this record - check the track "Heart Love" which is a proto-funk freak out. And Berrocal, well, it contains "Rock n' roll station" which "defines" what a rock and roll station might be and features Vince Taylor who was a British rock god.

Peter Brötzmann Octet ‎– Machine Gun
Albert Ayler - New Grass
Jacques Berrocal ‎– Parallèles

AG

strike the following:

Philip Glass/Bang on a Can - Music in Fifths/Two Pages

I fucked up on the recording date, which is too bad b/c these are relentless, seething works, edgier than any other Glass I've heard.

Hellhouse, Monday, 8 October 2012 05:20 (twelve years ago)

I think you're nuts for expanding this to '67, more hippie/psych/surf/garage nonsense to sift thru on top of an already ridiculously fecund period but w/e

And in a final twist .... we think that there should be a 3 album vote limit for a band/artist so to avoid top 10s with the same bands in it like with Sonic Youth in the 80s poll. Do you agree with that or want no limits?

think this is a good idea in theory but in practice makes ballot-making even more difficult, plus the vote-tallier does what with violaters? maybe better for you to suggest this as a guideline for voters so the results aren't littered with 1 or 2 bands.
