the 5:32 version created by splicing both together.

3:13 totally elevated it for me. there are about 50 amazing vocal moments in the song and half of them are in the last minute.

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 12:51 (twelve years ago)

This weekend I heard an a cappella version a friend had made. Wow.

couldn't find the a cappella of the original amongst all the covers on youtube, but sounds good chopped & screwed

i only listen to the long version now. took some time getting used to but why deprive yourself of that final minute

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 October 2012 13:00 (twelve years ago)

if not for the glory of the result it would make me sad that they had to make it LONGER for radio, and it's still probably the shortest song on the R&B charts right now. radio singles are all a bloated 4-5 minutes these days.

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 13:04 (twelve years ago)

I'm quite partial to the Sammy Bananas remix

MarkoP, Monday, 8 October 2012 14:47 (twelve years ago)

yeah I played the hell out of that over the weekend.

barthes simpson, Monday, 8 October 2012 14:47 (twelve years ago)

2.19. because it's perfectly formed?, like the extra verse is it changing direction for me, the thing less symmetrical. good poll!

unprotectable tweetz (schlump), Monday, 8 October 2012 15:26 (twelve years ago)

sammy bananas versh is crazy

there's a couple screwed versions on youtube, oh i can't even decide!!

you gonna share?

honestly as much as I love the longer version it's the shorter one for me, i think the way it ends is perfect and i thought it was brave of him to end such a substantial song so abruptly. i'm beginning to realize that i'm something of a miguel contrarian tho

la goonies (k3vin k.), Monday, 8 October 2012 15:41 (twelve years ago)

naw man I complete agree with you

the diddy/french remix of this is completely awesome

barthes simpson, Monday, 8 October 2012 16:28 (twelve years ago)

haha this is both dope and features french montana rapping about drowning a woman

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago)

perfect!

ooh that slowed down version is nice

Jacques_Lamure, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:42 (twelve years ago)

the only acceptable reason for voting for the 3:13 version is the falsetto

barthes simpson, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 20:07 (twelve years ago)

... that's totally a good reason!

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago)

reasons i'm voting for the 3:13 version:

1) the reverb on the snare when the drums snap back in
2) the bassline modulation
3) "look up, sugar"
4) the way he leans into the word "world"
5) the "just let" that really soars
6) the "you got to know" that he really bites down on
7) the falsetto, yeah
8) the emphasis on "looked" on "love ain't never looked so good"
9) the way he drifts just behind the beat on "oh put it on, baby," which is highlighted really well in that Bad Boy remix where the beat keeps going
10) the echo that envelops that final sublime "let my love adorn..."
11) that tiny, perfect spoken "you" that most radio stations cut off or start another song over

some dude, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:21 (twelve years ago)

2:19 by some distance

skrill xx (cozen), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:25 (twelve years ago)

oh and 12) the little synth bit that bridges from the old ending to the new section

that's all off memory, if my headphones were out i'd probably be able to do a few more

some dude, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago)

8) the emphasis on "looked" on "love ain't never looked so good"

This knocked me out too -- yet another example of the degree to which joy infuses his singing.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:29 (twelve years ago)

much as i eulogised 2:19 for its concision i gotta agree with j0rdan, once 3:13 is heard it simply cannot be unheard

r|t|c, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 00:14 (twelve years ago)

:D at the bad boy mix btw

clunky as shit but in terms of sheer nostalgia that's kinda an honest virtue somehow

r|t|c, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 00:22 (twelve years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

the only acceptable reason for voting for the 3:13 version is the falsetto

Really? How much do the 2:19 stand actively dislike the new section? I love the concision of the short version, especially the harmonies at the very end, the longer version just finds a whole new register.

Cherry vs icing really but I'm going with the icing.

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 03:51 (twelve years ago)

2:19 versh is pure like the driven snow~~~

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 03:57 (twelve years ago)

is there anything actually wrong with the additional 53 seconds in your opinion? because i listed like 11 reasons i love that section upthread and you haven't really suggested any real issue with the content of it besides some vague "less is more" ethos

PliesStripAThon5Jan20th@gmail.com (some dude), Sunday, 30 December 2012 03:59 (twelve years ago)

well, less is more

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago)

idk man, the 2:19 versh is the one I fell in love with first ya know? I appreciate all 11 reasons but sometimes love is ~irrational~

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago)

like yeah, the falsetto + the whispered 'you' is all time but sometimes you just wanna hear the O.G.

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:01 (twelve years ago)

we're fortunate to have the 2:19, the 3:13, the 4:09 ellen, all the other live vershs, it's a beautiful world

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:01 (twelve years ago)

true

i prob mentioned this in the main miguel thread but the baltimore station always plays the EP version and it can be such a frustrating experience for me, when it comes on the radio i check the station real quick and if it's not one of the DC stations i am genuinely disappointed and have to kind of dial back how much i can expect to enjoy listening to the song

PliesStripAThon5Jan20th@gmail.com (some dude), Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:04 (twelve years ago)

haha

well the 3:13 does add some ornamental instrumentation, when I play it on speakers there's that 'pop' sound that I've mentioned before, it's weird idk, I also just like how the 2:19 versh ends in the a capella harmonies

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:06 (twelve years ago)

yeah i kinda hate how awkward the 'ooh ooh' outro is, was one of the reasons i was not yet crazy about the song circa Art Dealer Chic and always wondered if the extra minute had already been written at that point and just cut off for the EP

PliesStripAThon5Jan20th@gmail.com (some dude), Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:08 (twelve years ago)

haha well I box lefty, I'm awkward

乒乓, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:10 (twelve years ago)

the bridge at 2:20 is so perfect. I love hearing the chords at the end of the bridge-thing kinda unexpectedly creep up. why wouldn't you want to hear that? And it feels totally natural and not simply "tacked on" to make the length appropriate for radio.

billstevejim, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:42 (twelve years ago)

IMO

billstevejim, Sunday, 30 December 2012 04:43 (twelve years ago)

yeah, the second modulation in the last bar of the bridge is really effective, if that's what you're getting at

Love how this tune has been such a sleeper; in the last week like three friends asked if I've heard this song by this guy named Miguel.

Rolling "2 chainz" draadje (The Reverend), Sunday, 30 December 2012 22:14 (twelve years ago)

yeah "adorn" is gonna keep on running with the soty nomination and if the rumours are correct the wider publicity that's going to surround him being on beyoncé's new single (AND THEREFORE POSSIBLY HIM SHOWING UP AT THE SUPERBOWL OMG OMG)
