New CD what came out last week...

After two listens, it sounds like a typical MDID record.. not much that blew me away (like Whirlpool fer instance) & haven't had a chance to listen to the lyrics really.

Anyway, I hope it at least means mini-tour... and the CD will grow on me.

Anyone else heard it? Interested in hearing it?

I got one of their albums years ago, "Everyone wants the honey but not the sting" or something. The helpful sticker on the front from those lovely people at Probe said "Nice stuff in a Bob Mould kinda way".

I was kind of underwhelmed. Very "local band makes good" sort of stuff.

I'm reminded of the phrase "how can you shag a horse so dead it's stopped smelling?". How many more times can you hear bass, drums, guitar and navel-gazing angst? Do we really need another My Dad is Dead album?

Yeah, who needs My Dad Is Dead when Interpol is much more photogenic?

I love My Dad Is Dead a lot - though I think they're a band who've been around so long, and had such a big effect on a very small number of people, that you sort of have to be familiar with their old stuff for something like "Everyone Wants the Honey" (which I luv) to make much sense. In re: "Do we really need another [insert unloved genre here] album," well, no, of course not; not any more than we need another propulsive-beats-with-computer-generated-sounds record, etc etc etc - I think the more pertinent question is "Do we really need any more questions asking whether this or that record is 'needed' since such questions beg the asked-and-answered question 'Is any music 'necessary'"?

"EWTH" was a record about divorce - Dave is there any connecting thread to the new one?

the new record seems, at least to me, be actually Edwards' funniest, a nice sense of humor folded into the gloom (not that humor hasn't poked its head up before in MDID songs) musing over being 40 and not being as connected to "rock" because age. Great songs on it include "Physical Fitness" about Edwards wishing he had the focus or drive to work out, and "Let's DIY", in which Edwards imagines opening up a club for just himself and his friends but knowing it's a really bad idea.

If you do a Google for "My Dad Is Dead", you're bound to find his homepage, where a good # of the old albums are available for download (for free, of course).

And, for what it's worth, the version of "Water's Edge" found on Tsunami's _Deep End_ (my introduction / only recollection of MDID to this point) is fantastic.

any connecting thread to the new one?

I haven't listened to it enough yet .. But there was a song about moving away from Cleveland (On My Way) ...

BTW - to order it: ($13 ppd)

.. no I don't work for them ... but it'll be the cheapest outlet...

I was specifically refering to My Dad is Dead. It seems the 80's and 90's American Alt-Rock generation are hanging around like Clapton and The Stones did throughout the seventies and eighties.

No argument here - except that you don't hear it on the radio constantly - There's nothing wrong with hangin' on to the old stuff .. you just gotta wonder why people don't get sick of hearing "Satisfaction", since it's everywhere. ..But other than in my own house, I can't think of any place I've ever heard "Anti-Socialist" - so I'm still willing to hear new stuff from old guys.

Mark Edwards' midperiod work (especially The Taller You Are - download "Seven Years" from the MDID site NOW - and Chopping Down The Family Tree) are well worth hearing. I was obsessed by them both for awhile. I was considerably less whelmed by the next couple of releases, and kind of fell out of touch with his work. I'm glad to see he's continuing, though.

three weeks pass...
Whatever MDID song/record you listen to, there's always something good and ear-catching. I hadn't heard about this new one as I live in the UK, but will have to track it down during next trip to US. I used to be married to Mark Edwards (that's me on the cover of Out of Sight Out of Mind), and I still think he's alright, so if you haven't yet given MDID a listen, it's well worth it, and I think the guy deserves a big round of applause for perseverence!
