Recommend Sick Mouthy some dance / electronic music that comes in individual tracks / singles, please

My rockist, CD-friendly predilections are probably causing me to miss out on stuff that is awesome, even though I do have lots and lots of individual dance / electronic tracks from over the years (from M/A/R/R/S to Nicolas Jarr to The Juan Maclean to Isolee to Todd Terje to The Field).

It can be stuff that appears on an album (like Beau Mot Plage) or a physical compilation (like By The Time I Get To Venus or Kappsta), or vinyl/download-only singles, or remixes, or whatever.

Grazie.

This is gonna be a pretty meaningless list thread unless you delineate what you're looking for a little more specifically than "dance / electronic music that comes in individual tracks / singles".

Even just a "vibe" might help.

Well I seldom have a clue what genre stuff falls into, and I don't keep up with any of the rolling threads really (they generally move too fast for my sporadic use of here).

I'll put together a list of stuff I love that people can vibe off, and delve into those playlists too.

Mouthy, the dance threads are fantastic. I don't post in them too often, but depending on whether you prefer house/techno (bobbins) or bass/breaks (partisans) it's well worth a trawl through the various youtube vids and seeing what you think. I've discovered loads of stuff through em and the people are totally knowledgeable and friendly on the whole.

why, in a forum which is as massive a resource as this and which has exactly these recommendations all over it, do you think you need or indeed deserve a personal thread?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 07:43 (thirteen years ago)

One other way I find out about dance music is to check out Boomkat and Resident Advisor whcih have neat little write-ups about new releases. Also 14tracks.com which is an offshoot of Boomkat release a compilation every month centring around a particular theme.

Mouthy, we have a Chicago juke and footwork thread here. Very rapid music made for dance battles in Chicago gyms and dojos. Has had a new lease of life in the last couple of years thanks to Mike Paradinas's Bangs & Works compilations on Planet-µ. The albums by DJ Rashad and Young Smoke this year are really something else, albeit rather niche. Still it's interesting to know it exists. I made a short mix a little while ago if you want to hear it, but it's stream only http://www.mixcloud.com/doglatin/dj-dog-latin-icklefoot-mix-footwork/

why, in a forum which is as massive a resource as this and which has exactly these recommendations all over it, do you think you need or indeed deserve a personal thread?

Because this is the internet and not your personal fiefdom? Because the very hugeness of this resource and multiplicity of recommendatiosn makes it difficult to parse? Because I've been posting here for 11 years and wouldn't begrudge anyone else asking something similar that I could help with? Because I don't have time to read every thread so have never, for instance, looked at one about "Chicago juke and footwork", because I have no idea what that is and there simply isn't time to look at every thread? Because talking about music and recommending it to people is what this board is about? Because gatekeeperism like this is exactly the kind of thing that puts me off interracting with people?

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 08:21 (thirteen years ago)

I may be talking completely out of my ass here and anyone from Chicago who wants to shout me down please do so, but while juke and footwork are often conflated because they came out of the same culture and musical lineage, they're kind of different beasts. Juke is pretty much souped-up, 808-driven ghetto house sped up to 150-160 with a lot of hip-hop influence thrown in. From what I understand, the footwork dance style arose in response to juke and the footwork music style arose in response to the dance. So now it's gone from a rhythmically accessible uptempo 4x4 to fractious rhythms driven by sub-bass and the need to be as rhythmically challenging for someone in a dance battle to keep up with without falling apart completely. Footwork arose to fill a hyperspecific need and to be honest, doesn't always hold together really well outside of its intended context.

For comparison, here's a DJ Rashad track from 2007 and a DJ Rashad track from 2012:

Has had a new lease of life in the last couple of years thanks to Mike Paradinas's Bangs & Works compilations on Planet-µ.

And I kind of have to take issue with this. It's only been given a "new lease of life" in the sense of being able to better reach outside of Chicago.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 08:47 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure if you are after up to date electronic stuff or are prepared to go back into the history a bit,. Are you acquainted with the Kraftwerk / Tangerine Dream canon? "Sowiesoso" by Cluster (like a more melancholy "Deluxe" by Harmonia, a record you've done on DRC) perhaps? For some reason the only thing I can think of at the moment to recommend - and it's an odd thought - is Fluke, their early albums "Techno rose of Blighty" and "Six wheels on my wagon" have individual tracks but work well as whole albums too, very propulsive, sequencer led, with some great melodies too. I'm not up to speed on much these days but I can recommend old stuff though. Another thought - "Scott 4 travel on elektrik trains" by Scott 4 is another personal favourite, like a late nineties update of "Trans Europe Express". Hope this helps.

Yeah Nick at the same time enough posters were starting threads going "recommend me stuff from this vast genre of millions of records with minimal guidance" it'd get pretty wearing, especially when there are two threads for current and past techno/house music that are constantly in New Answers.

I'm sympathetic to the "I don't have time to listen/read all this" argument but at some point if you're genuinely curious then you have to make a little bit of effort to engage with a genre outside what people actually lay at your feet.

Still, a lot of the music on the thread entitled 'Soft sad techno' should be to your taste.

Hey Rev, none of what you said is wrong. Juke and footwork did dovetail at a particular point. Footwork is designed to be a functional style of music (although I happily listen to it outside the intended context all the time - the Young Smoke album is particularly "listenable". Would you say that "reaching people outside of its original hyper-localised scene" doesn't count as a new lease of life? I think it does.

well yes but it's also the responsibility of whoever starts genre threads to ensure that they're approachable and not just hipster in-talk. if it's just balkanised ilxors talking amongst themselves then that's going to put other people off.

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:12 (thirteen years ago)

it's an inherent problem with rolling threads that they have a tendency to scare off paddlers and dilettantes, but i'm not exactly a dance expert and those threads are just fine for scanning through and checking out YouTubes. The chat is usually very much on topic throughout as well, so it's a shame so many feel intimidated.

Only if it's very simple talk that doesn't intimidate anyone or use any words that they might not understand, like the names of genres.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:38 (thirteen years ago)

has the fight started yet?

nashwan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:38 (thirteen years ago)

sorry matt but it's also patronising, sneery gatekeeper talk like yours that drives people away from these threads and ilx in general.

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:41 (thirteen years ago)

I mean Marcello you're the one who complains about newspaper music sections treating readers like they're idiots who can't use Google. What exactly is the difference here.

I mean if you're looking to find out about music there's no substitute for actually listening to it and THEN talking about whether you like it and why, as happens on multiple threads, rather than detailing reasons why you can't listen to it or expecting people to spoonfeed you.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:43 (thirteen years ago)

Also it's not "gatekeeper talk" if you're actually saying "dive in and explore" rather than "keep out".

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:47 (thirteen years ago)

this is a pretty babyish and unproductive argument. thread's been started and people are recommending things, so let's be cool. Matt and Marcello's points are equally valid. I'm kind of put off checking out the swag threads because AFAIK they're a whole tangle of in-jokes, slang terms and references to obscure mixtapes, which is great if you're actively involved in all that, but kind of bewildering for the rest of us. Then again I also don't check that thread out because I'm a lazy bugger who can't be bothered to spend a couple of hours getting my head around what is essentially a bunch of YouTubes and recommendations.

where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:48 (thirteen years ago)

it's not even just the rolling threads, people recommend their favourite tracks (of the year, of the moment, of all time) all day every day on ilm, and if you're incurious enough to check them out then (or to ask people about them) then why should you expect people to do the legwork for you here? especially when you're about as vague as it's even possible to be.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:49 (thirteen years ago)

(FWIW I'm not really talking about the original poster here, it's just an exasperating attitude in general).

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:50 (thirteen years ago)

starting threads for/about oneself are just poor etiquette in general though tbh

frame it in more general terms - "what are your favourite electronic singles ever" or something and you might have got a better response

though seeing as ilm is doing massive polls on precisely that subject atm it would be as redundant as this tbh

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:51 (thirteen years ago)

and from my pov, barely a day goes by when i don't recommend music i love - in my work or on twitter or this is my jam or all over the place here etc. if you weren't paying attention then why would i repeat myself yet again in a thread specially for you?

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:54 (thirteen years ago)

There's no denying that genres, particularly dance music genres, have a tendency to breed gatekeepers who'll shoot down noobs for not knowing the difference between one micro-trend to another, or what begat what, or enthusing about a track that's been out for "months now". For those who are more accustomed to album-based music, the way that dance evolves and spreads its legacy over time in the way that it does can feel a bit fluctuous, and I think that can sometimes work as a barrier for some people in trying to make the crossover. I dunno...

where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 10:01 (thirteen years ago)

didn't you read what southall posted above (xp)?

because ilx is not an elitist forum for know-alls. if you want that go to dissensus. the reason people come here is to DISCUSS music and consider each other's opinions. Dog Latin is probably OTM. there's no conflict between what i say about newspapers and messageboards becuase they are entirely different things with different aims and different types of audience. we're not talking about spoonfeeding. we're talking about people being civil to each other and showing some basic respect for each other, not treat like retarded Down's syndrome cases people who don't happen to have flown to Milan for ten minutes in May 2009 to get that super-limited but superior 12" remix and lord it sneeringly over people who aren't in your self-appointed clique or go "BUT MC you said in that thread back in 2004 hyuk hyuk." it's not a fiefdom but neither is it the school debating society. there's a middle ground which is to be preferred to effectively locking people out because they don't know your in-jokes or slang or haven't gone through ten thousand previous ilx threads to find out what it's about.

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 10:01 (thirteen years ago)

you'd probably like the richard davis album 'details' if you haven't heard it already. sad longing techno, lots of beautiful strings + echoing piano chords, real proper actual songs, restrained, very good this time of year

yeh i wouldn't bother with that villalobos ECM album, if you want one thing by him get alcachofa. drifting drones and ping pong balls and deeeeeeep bass very organic strangely funky couple of the "hits" are on it

cosign on that BNJMN recommendation; also Fatima al-Qadiri.

some indie-ish electronic/dance that springs to mind and I don't think have been mentioned):
Gold Panda -- Lucky Shiner (fits nicely in the orbit of The Field, Four Tet, Caribou)
Mount Kimbie -- Crooks & Lovers (not dance at all; sort of Boards of Canada meets a bunch of the UK "bass" music stuff)
Kuedo -- Severant (might be a backdoor to the footwork stuff that dog latin has been raving about, as it's more or less footwork + Vangelis + a certain strain of Southern US hip hop; pick a track at random and you'll be able to tell if you'll like it)

probably easier for a rockist to get into compilations than DJ mixes. the Hyperdub one from '05 might appeal (I definitely think you'd like Darkstar's "Aidys Girl's a Computer"), from this year Shangaan Shake has lots of great people on it that have been mentioned itt

I realise this thread came out of the discussion about how many physical album purchases people had made which in turn came out of (I think) a Grizzly Bear thread and you're addressing the issue of missing out on one-offs because of the way you currently buy music ... but I'm mulling over the idea that sometimes there's a value to not hearing stuff.

My own access to music and listening habits have changed with a shift from music journalism to an unrelated 9-5 job which circumvents listening to music in the day (unless I'm driving) but my enjoyment of music hasn't changed ... and I can actually afford to buy music now.

(Not intended to be a criticism of the thread and not a completely coherent and thought-through idea).

That said, I'd guess you'd like Diagrams based on other music I've heard/read you recommend.

I have pretty much every remix Ewan Pearson has done and yet it took me five years to hear Trauermusik. It's one of the reasons I value ILX polls - I put together Spotify playlists of all the tracks I haven't heard and stumble across beauties like this and (from the same poll) Richard Davis's astonishing Bring Me Closer, which I think Sick would also love.

he was playing with some white kids, and they call him over and whispered something in his ear, you know

I had never heard that Richard Davis track outside the context of Mayer's Fabric mix until the ILX poll. The sweeping strings in the last couple of minutes really took me by surprise.

It's so great - honestly one of my favourite dance tracks of the 00s now.

AHHH I had forgotten how amazing "in The Moog For Love" is until just now.

I preferred Total 7 to Total 8 but that track might be my favourite off either.

Tim F, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:11 (thirteen years ago)

i suspected i preferred the other two steadycam records to that one so i went back and checked.

BANGER: like if an italian vampire porn movie decided it needed a techno soundtrack.

the "get on up with" one was good too.

Steadycam!

Steadycam - Knock Kneed is one of the most descriptive names for a dance tune since 'Long Whiney' by Global Goon

I think I mentally conflate Totals 7 and 8 actually, my favourites appear to be split over both. Thomas/Mayer's 'Uber Weisen' is another terrific one.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

Knock Kneed is indeed another amazing one.

Loved the early Steadycam and Borrato (eg. Arquipelago) so so much.

i am rockist too but i found it tough to get into dance music thru trax/singles exclusively, despite that being in general my fav way to listen to music. and i barely like any dance albums. so many house/techno trax start off quietly with like a minute of just drums, a little bass, everything else slowly entering the mix, then eventually peter out in a similar way. it can be p exasperating if you listen to a lot in sequence. lately i'm listening to crazy amounts of dance music but exclusively thru mixes, they usually cut to the goods & expose you to way more stuff than downloading/buying individual trax ever could, i recommend check out the thread entitled "your favourite mixes of 2012, fuck"
