I don't know how I made it all the way to 2002 without ever hearing Anton Barbeau (although, it may have something to do with the fact he's on a micro-indie and gets no press).

i laughed when i saw "we run" mentioned. i had a typical "love it, don't know who is it by" situation with that song, until this year.

what else? i heard marc almond's cover of "like a prayer". it made my year.

Beach Boys, Pet Sounds. I know I know, irritatingly hipster album to love, etc. But I'd never given it much of a listen before this year.
Joe Cocker's cover of "You Can Leave Your Hat On."
Nick Cave. Hadn't really paid much attention to him before, no idea why.
Radiohead. Really disliked Radiohead when "Creep" was first overplayed; love em now. Even "Creep."

TMFTML (TMFTML), Friday, 27 September 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of my discoveries this year have been inspired by getting the Anthology of American Folk Music as a Christmas present last year. With that set as my guide, I explored albums by the Carter Family, Uncle Dave Macon, Mississippi John Hurt, and Blind Lemon Jefferson, also Johnny Cash, although he is from a later period. Other discoveries were albums by artists I already liked that I had overlooked: New Morning and Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan, Hendrix's Band of Gypsys, Light as A Feather and Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy by Chick Corea. But the biggest area of exploration for me this year has been country, folk, and blues.

In 2002, I re-discovered The Melvins and Flaming Lips.

I also finally heard The Cure's early albums. I have had "Standing On A Beach" and some of their later albums, but had checked out the first four.

In 2002, I became pretty obsessive listener of Stars of the Lid and Steve Roach, both of which I first checked out in the later part of 2001.
