The Swirlies C/D?

I have just seen a terrible show by an american band called the Swirlies in Amsterdam. Does anyone know this band?

what did you think of the drummer?

[they used to be a really great band]

The drummer had a piece of paper in one ear and took a lot of time between songs (we call it 'duurt lang'). But he was quite ok. He swapped drums with playing samples with another guy as well. You could hear some good songs if you listened well, but the sound was terrible. Where are they from and what did they do up till now? I even saw a compilation, so they must be out there for quite some time.

hstencil to thread!

the drummer on the current us tour played in a cut/paste rock band named "storm and stress" a few years back that sounded much different then what i believe the sound the swirlies would be making at this point in time.

the swirlies c/d = #1 and #2...

see here for more swirlies mentions on ILM... the Search function on the bottom of the page is pure chaste glory, i mean that.

I rest my case..

Seana Carmody - Struts And Shocks

great 2002 solo album from ex-Swirlies singer/guitarist
buy it, luv it, go see her live (currently on U.S. tour)

somewhat uncannily, i was _just_ thinking about why the swirlies never claimed their rightful place as progenitors of a new american pop tradition (sob); and, as it was occurring to me that i never saw them live, i saw this thread.

blondertongueaudiobaton is one of my favourite albums of the nineties. although unfairly saddled with the mbv-clone tag, they seemed too conscious of this when they made 'they spent their...'*, and it's not as pure, somehow, as a result. better produced, maybe, but lacking for the most part the spontaneous, sugarspaz tweeness that made btab great.

there's a fair amount of filler on the EPs, but standouts here and there as well (tall ships, you're just jealous - best radio solo, everrr). never really liked syrup usa, though. sparkless.

maybe they were terrible live, though.

*except for about 10-15 seconds in one song where it's like a blatant loveless pastiche - a knock at their critics, i always thought (although i've been known to read too much into the odd thing...)

I heard the drummer got roped into it because one of the bandmembers is his roommate, or some such business.

she's playing here on the 6th, i will go see. last time i saw swirlies it was 1992? maybe 93.

the swirlies are supposed to make a real album soon aren't they, or am i just projecting my dreams?

"Swirlies are the Greatest Shoegaze Band of All Time"

cmon, that headline is shameless hyperbole. I mean, Swirlies were pretty good, but jesus christ
