She gets so low on the verses of "Unbreak My Heart" it's breathtaking

I think she's down on a D or something ludicrous like that

"you're makin' me high" is classic 4eva

"he wasn't man enough" is prob my fav braxton overall

lex pretend, Friday, 26 October 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)

i think i might vote for "i don't want to" just so "you're makin me high" doesn't sweep

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Friday, 26 October 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

fav Braxton overall is probably either "You Mean The World To Me" or "Breathe Again"

Oh yes, You're Makin' Me High without a doubt (though Un-Break My Heart is proof of just how good a Diane Warren ballad can be in the right hands). Sound-wise, it definitely bears the mark of Bryce Wilson (of Groove Theory), not so much Babyface's. I never understood why he didn't have much more of a career as a producer afterwards (even though his Wikipedia page makes it sound like he did).
Funny how she, "classy" new R&B star as she was at the time, got away with "I can imagine you touching my private parts". I don't remember anyone blinking an eye, maybe because she bluntly put it right there at the start of the song. As it happens, touching her own privates could have very well been be the subject of Another Sad Love Song off her debut album, but there it was nice and coded ("I'm in my car again").
That cover was indeed awfully cheap-looking for such a major album...

i'm embarrassed to say i'm not sure if i've heard anything on this other than "unbreak my heart" (which i once derided but now recognize for its secret brilliance). will report back later.

I would like to hear "I Love Me Some Him".

How is this album? I've never heard it. As everyone says tho, "You're Making Me High" is all-time

Never heard this album either, but remedying that right now.

So, how was "There's No Me Without You" not even a single? Was Babyface shedding songs so effortlessly in the 90s that one this gorgeous could remain buried on an album (an 8x platinum selling one, but still)? That a dreary puddle of Dianne Warren schmaltz was what the record company pushed and the public embraced in the place of this has me all kinds of enraged right now.

^^^ this. I've never stopped loving this song.

Tried listening to it with fresh ears when listening to the whole album (which I mostly enjoy), and while its nowhere near the worst or Warren, it still grates for me.

1994-1996 was my nadir as an R&B and pop listener: things got in through the chinks in my armor; otherwise this was the period in which I listened most to college radio. Yet my friends and I liked Toni Braxton. In a makeshift top ten for my college paper I put "Breathe Again" in my singles of the year and no one batted an eye.

As for this album's other singles, the amazing thing is that I heard "Un-Break My Heart" far more often than "You're Makin' Me High," discovered a couple years later ("I Love Me Some Him" was the sleeper for me).

twelve years pass...

Pitchfork Sunday Review

Can't fathom thinking "There's No Me Without You" is "melodically among the stiffer Babyface ballads" but the 13yo poll results here show that I may be in the minority on that one.
