Yr right, drumming (/entire phil spector massive rhythm section) is so tight on this album.

This album is so good. I think I have to go for Awaiting On You All because it is my guaranteed pickmeup - such a massive, massive, jubilant sound, and the thing which made me fall in love with wall o' sound - and for the lines about the pope.

But that would be doing massive disservice to Isn't It A Pity (first version), I'd Have You Anytime, What Is Life, Apple Scruffs, Let It Down, Frankie Crisp... Love this album.

I've never owned it. Love both singles, but I voted for "Behind That Locked Door."

"What Is Life" still sounds great whenever I hear it on an oldies channel.

The two singles are classic. Although I'm on record hating George's voice I prefer his "If Not For You" to Dylan's, and "Apple Scruffs" is one of the best faux Dylan songs anyone's ever written.

It's gotta be 'Art Of Dying' for me. Fucking love that intro.

Thinking "Awaiting on You All" - there's something uncanny about how it works as classic Spector sound. It's a bit of a sleeper, but I do think I'd take it over the two singles or "Run of the Mill."

Gonna have to think about it but I'm also a huge fan of "Awaiting On You All" and I love the idea of it winning this poll by a landslide.

Probably going with "Wah-Wah," one of my favorite Ringo moments.

Even though I went for 'Art Of Dying', 'Awaiting On You All' was a definite contender. I can see why people love that song... it's just so joyous and uplifting, and I'm not religious in the slightest!

title track for me, although I wish the beatles had recorded a full version of it because there are little bits of this version that bug. but it's still my favorite song of this batch, slightly (I like almost everything on this album, jam aside)

I almost voted "Awaiting on You All" though. Amazing girl group-style pop spirituality. This album rules from start to finish.

I'm amazed though that a lot of fans consider it the best Beatles solo album.

It's got some of the best material by far - it just also has a lot of other stuff too. Gotta say that the quality level for the deep cuts is pretty consistent, but man, single album version of this, though missing the majestic "look at all that has been locked in the treasure chest of my soul" quality, would be a monster.

I can't really think of a particular song on Let It Come Down that "Let It Down" reminds me of, but I would definitely say that if you were going to check out Spiritualized because of a comparison to this song, then Let It Come Down is absolutely the place to begin.

But for me, this is either "Wah-Wah", "What Is Life", or "Let It Down".

Beware of Darkness, for so many reasons; the way he sings "take kurr bewurr", the siren like guitar call, the spiritual melancholia George so excels in, the beautiful melody...

this album is definitely a heavy reference point for Let it Come Down

I was never really too keen on the 'jam sessions' part of this record, and 'I Dig Love' is never going to be one of my favourite ever George Harrison compositions. I like how he gives you the option between two different versions of 'Isn't It A Pity' (the former, BIG and bombastic - the second, stripped down and more 'cosy'), though.

He has, but also, if you watch Let It Be, the thought of being in a band with Paul McCartney takes on a shitty new meaning.

Don't remember it that way, but I haven't seen it in decades. And anyone can have a bad day, etc.

Do remember that people seemed to view Paul's perspective on those sessions more favorably when this book came out.

I don't think I've told this story before: when I was a teenager my cousin and I made several short movies with my dad's 8mm camera and editor. One was called "The Art of Dying," and the soundtrack (on cassette!) was segments of Harrison's Electronic Sound. The plot was mostly a ripoff of the TV series "Kung Fu," with my cousin and I in our karate uniforms. After fighting his "deadly" german shepherd we died in a field. The End.

Too bad nothing on Let It Come Down is as good as this.

Also I think I've finally come around to this album. Hearing the 2010 mix has made all the difference.

It's a lossless release that you could download straight from the official website and that has since been withdrawn but if you can get your hands on it, I'd say it's very much worth your while. It sounds a lot more natural and less Spector-esque to my ears. Even the folks over at Steve Hoffman agree that it's the ideal way to hear All Things Must Pass.

Never much liked the echo-laden mix, but don't especially like most of the songs either. Harrison's 70s decline is over-emphasized, there are as many good songs on Extra Texture as on All Things Must Pass (three or four). I'd have voted "What is Life".

"What is Life", "I'd Have You Anytime", "Beware of Darkness", maybe "Isn't It a Pity" or "My Sweet Lord". Most of the remaining songs just don't get over melodically or lyrically, and the Apple Jam album is junk.

I love ATMP - except for the "jam" disc, it's always been an excellent album to me, and I don't even consider that third disc to be part of the album anymore. (When George promoted the reissue in 2000, he stated in a Billboard interview that "For the jams, I didn't want to just throw in the cupboard, and yet at the same time it wasn't part of the record; that's why I put it on a separate label to go in the package as a kind of bonus." There's at least one interview from 1970 where Harrison basically said the same, adding that he was annoyed that the list price was also raised accordingly because he was under the impression that Capitol would price it as a double LP per his request.)

"You" has been the only track I ever liked from Extra Texture, but if there's something else on there that I should revisit, I would definitely give it another listen.

Harrison otm about its "grotty" self-production. His singing is worse than on Dark Horse.

I did mention "Beware of Darkness". "Let It Roll" is a quirky song I can understand liking, "Let It Down" is woefully overblown.

Holy shit, $1000? I don't think I love any album *that* much.

Looks like the original album mixes aren't a part of this (aside from the 'bonus' jams that had been included with the original triple-LP set). It'll be interesting to hear a new mix, but despite Harrison's reservations about it, Spector's original LP mix may still be the mix for me.

Definitely—the murk is part of what makes the LP so atmospheric for me, though I can see why some might dislike it on the more rockin’ tracks.

I like the original, but maybe the new mix will be along the lines of the Abbey Road or white album remixes: there are infinitely more EQ options available in 2021 vs 1970, so clearing out some of the sonic clutter may lead to something interesting and hopefully revealing.

While I prefer John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band to ATMP, I'm not really interested in that box; I don't think I want or need multiple takes and false starts of "My Mummy's Dead." But hearing just George, Ringo, and Klaus run through the ATMP tunes, yeah, I definitely want to hear that.

(I would LOVE to hear the Yoko outtakes in the JL/POB box, but those are only on the Blu-Ray, and I don't have a Blu-Ray player.)

The Plastic Ono Band box set is an excellent listen. For anyone who loves the album and is really interested in hearing how it came together and studying the individual parts, it's perfect. It's basically the musical equivalent of wading through a truckload of extras on a great Criterion release. But that doesn't mean it's something you'd want to own for a lot of money. It's something I'd check out or rent from a library once in a blue moon. Studio session collections are typically like that though.

yeah, the only thing like that i've ever really listened to like an album in regular rotation (apart from when I JUST discovered a Smile bootleg) is actually the Beatles Anthology, and mostly just a couple key discs of that.

I finally got around to listening to the super deluxe set. I'm not a fan of the new mixes, especially when I was able to patch my computer into my stereo and hear it properly on good speakers. Even if you don't mind the historical revisionism (and I'm not always a stickler about "sticking with the original") the instrumental balance feels off - it just doesn't sound very good to me.

The fifth and last disc of session recordings is disposable. The opening "Isn't It Shitty" (to the tune of "Isn't It A Pity") is funny, but otherwise there's really nothing here I'd come back to.

That just leaves discs three and four covering the two days of demo sessions, and those are definitely a keeper. Not surprising - most of them have been bootlegged before and even with inferior sound, it was easily my favorite bootleg of George Harrison recordings. The two discs are more complete and presumably straight from the first-generation tapes (a major upgrade), but I kind of wish they left in all the in-between chatter. It's a matter of personal taste, but for something like this, I like hearing it all left in, and it sounds like most of the chatter has been edited out.

The previous deluxe edition (originally released in 2001) only had a handful of bonuses, and they're generally not included here for some reason. No big loss except for this bonus track which I really do miss:

It does appear in demo form, but the 2001 version is a real gem thanks to Pete Drake's pedal steel parts. I can't call it an outtake because it features only Harrison's lead vocal and Pete Drake's pedal steel from the original 1970 recording - all other instruments were actually overdubbed by Harrison and Dhani in 2000.

It's too bad the two discs of demos won't get its own standalone release. If you had those two discs and the 2014 remaster of All Things Must Pass (which includes the 2001 edition's new bonuses), you would have everything essential related to this album. That would've been a perfect four-disc set had they chosen to include the demos with the 2001 reissue.
