Hydra Head are posting their back cat alphabetically on Bandcamp at the moment, so I expect that Craw record will be available to buy/stream pretty soon.

The Bergraven, Helms Alee, Lustmord and Oxbow are all great in different ways but holy crap I will rep for that Pyramids album forever. My favourite thing ever to come out on HH and my favourite thing that came out that year (the year in which iirc most people would have given the answer to both questions as Meanderthal).

There's a bunch of good stuff there. My favorites: Agoraphobic Nosebleed, PCP Torpedo (the other one is a remix record which I don't love); Bergraven; Helms Alee; Knut (I fucking love Knut); Ocrilim; Oxbow; Xasthur, Defective Epitaph.

so i am about to dig into the oxbow since that was recommend #1, but before that i randomly listened to The Dukes of Nothing and it seemed pretty good? know absolutely nothing (haw!) abt these dudes, but i dug what i heard.

i don't know most of this, but i like ocrilim. i also readily acknowledge that ocrilim is Not For Everybody.

theres some skeleton key in here and some jangly uptuned harvey milkisms and huh whoa this is really really good

and now some jesus lizard. $40 investment paying off quickly on this whole deal.

ok this lustmord is a grower. not totally sold yet, but i shoulda been freaking out kids with this last night.

alright, i will admit that i skipped godeater on the lustmord record, because it is 22 minutes long. not saying i dont dig it, my attention span is just waning at this point. dark awakening seems more interesting so far, interested to see what ash has to offer because its abt 4 minutes.

and ash appears to be 4 minutes of wind sounds. going to come back to this when i am in the mood for soundscapes. theres def some nurse with wound touchstones here that i can be totally down with, but not at this point in the night.

latter tracks on the craw are improving singer-wise, this is def worth another listen, but for now i am going with 2/4 for this cd load.

and as i say that, "flunky" shows up and convinces me that craw is pretty fucking good.

ok i think that i can give my main criticism wrt craw, these dudes need to let go of the wacky character based vocal intro, that shit drives me crazy in the modern era. we cant all be dead kennedys, stop trying.

sardonic character lyrics are played out forever, plz stop music forever, or go be the decemberists or something.

that said i really like this when dude is not being a mouthpiece for imaginary enemies.

Yeah, should have said, Lustmord is all crushing atmosphere. There's an ILM thread called something like "Being sucked out of an airlock into space, what's on yr iPod" which is more or less just people going on about the Lustmord album "The Place Where The Black Stars Hang" (which imo is his best).

I think the Austerity Programs, Craw, ANB PCP Torpedo and Cavity stuff is all amazing and essential and the rest not so amazing although I haven't heard all of it. The Oxbow rules too but I never seem to actually listen to that band even though I like them quite a bit.

This may be apocryphal, but I think the Craw singer used to have his lines on index cards and he would shuffle them and read them at random when they played live, tossing them aside once read. But yes, he is an acquired taste perhaps best enjoyed if you don't focus to much on what he's saying and let it kind of seep into the stream of your consciousness.

Ocrilim is interesting but I can't listen to that stuff on recordings, it's too annoying. That said, Orthrelm (the guitar guy's prior band) playing OV was maybe the best show I've ever seen. I think the drummer got a repetitive stress injury (not really surprising if you've heard the album) or something a few days after the show and they broke up!!!

I love a lot of those albums, but another vote for Pyramids - just such a unique album. Is it the deluxe edition with the remixes on it? Because some of those are actually really beautiful.

Seeing him performing with Merzbow a couple of weekends ago was awesome, yet the Oxbow Orchestra was even weirder - dressed up to the point he announced “You don’t know how much I have to restrain myself in keeping my penis in my pants”.

when i saw them, he kept his underwear on but definitely...um...achieved half-wood

i talked with him after the show cuz he was bunking at a friend's house, he was really nice and i was just chatting so i said, where are you guys headed next, and he said, matter of factly, "well i gotta go back to san francisco to be in an orgy"

This was maybe 10 years ago, I should add. An Evil Heat had just come out so that's, what, 2002? 2003?

yeah my mate put them on round the same time in Cardiff, which was '02. Eugene found a bagpipe player busking on the street and convinced him to come into the venue and perform just before their set

Oh aye, V/vm was hilarious. People really had no idea what was going on. V/vm then came back to the Cube for the Christmas party later in the year and gave out raffle prizes like used advent calendars. Ah, happy days.
