POLL: Rhino Records' D.I.Y. Series

This series appeared when I was 19, the PERFECT time for that to happen. It was basically a roadmap into a bunch of obscure and likewise great music that was nowhere on my radar. Is that true for anyone else?

and nowadays, D.I.Y. is all like "build a deck. renovate your bathroom."

The whole series is awesome, but "Starry Eyes" was the one that spent the most amount of time in my discman back then.

thought the undertones were an american band all these years

Used to be able to find this whole series as cut-out cassettes in pretty much every chain mall store.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 01:59 (twelve years ago)

I owned all nine, and I think eight of them were cutouts.

Need to vote, self! Teenage Kicks, Starry Eyes or Anarchy.

What Kind Of EOY POLL Do You Look Like Now? (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 November 2012 00:28 (twelve years ago)

Literally all of the above. Still indispensable.

She Got the Shakes, Monday, 12 November 2012 00:30 (twelve years ago)

They all have their merits, but Starry Eyes was one of the most revelatory comps I ever encountered. Still listen to it/artists I discovered through it a lot.

'Modern World' is one of my fave albums of all time full stop. Had a long convo at a party last night about how sad it is that this isn't a profitable model going forward. And while the Internet is OMG EVERY PUNK SINGLE ON YOUTUBE EVER YOU GUISE, no one is doing the loving curation Rhino did.

And, yeah, I was probably about 19-20 when I first stumbled upon these in the library, which was definitely the best time for them (same time/way I discovered Beefheart!). Was awestruck when I found a bunch of them for $1 a pop a couple of years later.

the power pop stuff on mass ave is breathtaking. "lonelyhearts" by the atlantics and "i'm talking to you" by the maps are prob two of my fave new wavish songs ever. bought a few of these comps back at mid 90s and still get a major kick out of them.

Going with Teenage Kicks.

What Kind Of EOY POLL Do You Look Like Now? (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 12 November 2012 02:43 (twelve years ago)

I did too, but this was so hard. I had no idea what I'd vote for when I started the poll.

two months pass...

Man, I could use another 9 volumes of this. The internet is the stupidest shit.

Guccifer 2 Time (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 9 February 2013 20:36 (twelve years ago)

Its so dumb that I bought these as like 99 cent cut out cassettes and now I'm slowly repurchasing them all as $16 OOP used CDs with cutout punches still in them

Guccifer 2 Time (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 9 February 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)

Well, that indicates that even if it's all up on Youtube, people still see the value in them.

And I concur, in these days of everything-ever-available, great comps are still incredibly valuable. I suppose we'll have to just take the DIY approach. In the recent post-punk thread, Dan S listed a proposed expanded version of the classic "Wanna Buy A Bridge" comp which I promptly compiled and it's bloody marvellous.

DIY: Anarchy In The UK - UK Punk I (1976-77)

this thing seriously changed my life -- still remember what a mindfuck it was to hear 'oh bondage, up yours!' for the first time.
