love this album, "Liar" is tremendous

Yeah, man! While this may not be the best produced Queen album, and it doesn't share the great sequencing and front-to-back great material of say, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and A Night At The Opera, there's a rawness and a charm to this record which makes me keep coming back to it time and time again!

I'm really unsure as to which cut I would pick on this one - every song on side one is absolutely killer in my opinion, 'Liar' just rocks so fucking hard, and 'Son And Daughter' has such a fucking filthy and slutty riff!

Eight votes and next-to-no conversation about the record... ILX delivers!

For some reason lots of people seem to think this album is formative and nothing more. I'd rank it only behind Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack for consistency. It's all there - Brian's rocker-that-doesn't-really-rock (Son And Daughter), Roger's 50's obsession (Modern Times Rock n'Roll), Freddie's light-opera-in-5-minutes prog epics (My Fairy King, Doing All Right). Plus stupid lyrics (all of it). All that's missing is a 3rd-rate pop-rock number from John.

Yup, I agree. I'll admit, I've never really been too taken with the way the record sounds (especially the drum sound), and I do think the album would definitely have sounded much better (and generally would have a much better reputation) if they'd been able to take the same amount of time on it as they had with Queen II or Sheer Heart Attack - but really, it's the only thing I can really fault about the record! You're certainly right about all the ingredients being already there, and in terms of material, I find this one to be much stronger than later Queen albums that tend to get a lot of praise on here - like The Game, for example!

Also, while I think Queen II has the superior production values, I actually think Queen has stronger hooks!

Funnily enough, they played a brief snippet of 'Great King Rat' during gigs on The Works tour - there's some footage of it on Youtube, but they'd definitely become a different band by that point. Freddie's voice definitely gained power over the years, but I think as it gained power, it kinda lost that delicate touch that he had on those early albums.

I agree with the #1 and 2 placement in this poll

Oh, I'm definitely more than happy with the #1 spot. 'Liar', to me, is one of the bands best ever tracks! I am a little disappointed than 'Son And Daughter' didn't get a vote, though.
