forgotten/understated 'classic' pop songs of the 80s and 90s

Name some!

they dont even have to be classic as such...just a little different/quirky/possessing something that means they shouldnt just not be mentioned/heard ever again...they must be quintessentially poppy tho

some nominations

Wax 'Bridge To Your Heart' (as mentioned on recent thread)

Marc Almond 'Jacky' and 'The Days Of Pearly Spencer' (grossly OTT and somewhat trite yet strangely glorious...possibly!)

Peter Gabriel 'Steam' (less memorable hit by hugely successful artists may not be as worthwhile in this list, but i cant help liking this meself)

Diana King 'Shy Guy' (ummm, i dunno...)

? 'The Bell(e) Of St Mark' (cant remember who did this? was it a big hit even?)

these off the top of my head like...more 80s stuff needed e.g. Scarlet Fantastic or something - stuff you remember but no-one else seems to even tho it was a big hit

i dunno if i REALLY like these tracks much...but there's something about them - they all seem out of place in today's pop market (except maybe 'Shy Guy') but they're all very polished well done pop songs i'm inclined to believe

blueski, Friday, 27 September 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

some other things to note are that these are the kind of tracks perceived now as utterly uncool, and they probably were at the time as well! but is that really the case? was there not even an ironic love of tracks like these if not a genuine one? i dont think any fondness i have for them is rooted in irony - which is quite worrying i confess...perhaps they're just trigger tracks that i've allocated memory for just for random nostalgic reference

blueski, Friday, 27 September 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

deon estus - heaven help me.

"(Another) Holiday" - The Other Ones

Joe (Joe), Friday, 27 September 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"Don't Get Me Wrong" is a bit more "forgotten" than "Chain Gang" and it also sounds great on mixtapes next to the Strokes.

lotus eaters - first picture of you

simon 803 (simon 803), Saturday, 28 September 2002 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

oh sheila - ready for the world.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 28 September 2002 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

for a brief moment the grapes of wrath were my salvation from the canadian content law, but i forget what their 'hit' was. 'i am here' or something? i know john leckie produced it.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 28 September 2002 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

That's the one.

'Peace of Mind' was fairly up there as well though.

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 28 September 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"the promise" -when in rome.

mike (ro)bott, Saturday, 28 September 2002 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

"Belle of St Mark" was Sheila E.
Haven't heard Timex Social Club's "Rumours" in a while!

dave q, Saturday, 28 September 2002 08:52 (twenty-three years ago)

dream academy's second album is genius in retrospect.

doomi, Saturday, 28 September 2002 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i was gonna mention Blow Monkeys 'Digging Your Scene' but felt it was actually well remembered enough...such a great Yuppie anthem!

blueski, Saturday, 28 September 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

arrrggh, not When In Rome! didnt they steal the basslkine from 'love is in the air' for that one?

how about:

Modern Talking 'Brother Louie'
Desireless 'Voyage Voyage'
Fuzzbox 'Pink Sunshine'
Karel Fialka 'Hey Matthew'
Neneh Cherry 'Manchild' (doesnt seem well remembered, but it was so unlike anything else at the time)
Soho 'Hippy Chick' (famously sampling 'How Soon Is Now')
Dimples D 'Sucker DJ'
Jesus Loves You 'Generations of love'
Oui 3 'Break From The Old Routine'
Addis Black Widow 'Innocent' (not bad apart from the terrible female rap)
Stakka Bo 'Here We Go' (Sweden's own Vanilla Ice never sounded so good)
MN8 'I've Gotta Little Something For Ya'

sure these are all probably naff as well but strangely loveable...i sure hope no-one adds Whigfield to this thread tho

blueski, Saturday, 28 September 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Grayson Hugh, "Talk It Over"

Underclocked, Saturday, 28 September 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Lonnie Gordon - Happenin' All Over Again
Bananarama - Only Your Love/Preacher Man (brief non-PWL flirtation with Youth, slightly unexpected Stones influence)
Sleeper - Swallow/Delicious/Inbetweener (people liked them to start with, y'know, and with GOOD CAUSE)
Donna Summer - I Don't Wanna Get Hurt/Alison Moyet - Whispering Your Name (middle-aged ladies of pop make semi-successful comeback bids)
Rob'n'Raz & Leila K - Got To Get
Martika - Martika's Kitchen (CREAKY)
Luscious Jackson - Naked Eye
West End & Sybil - The Love I Lost

...also, nowhere near enough people talk about Stay by Shakespears Sister anymore.

alexfack, Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

you've got a hard on for SAW i see - i ALMOST listed London Boys 'Requiem'...and i thought about Rob n Raz too but refrained for some reason...

as for Donna Summer, what about 'Dinner With Gershwin' - its so ridiculously 1986...not keen on any of her later SAW produced stuff AT ALL myself

Shakespeare Sister - hated 'Stay' - loved 'Your History' and 'Run Silent' and even 'I Dont Care' at the time

blueski, Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I was five in 1986, so earlier non-I Feel Love Donna Summer stuff passed me alas. Pretty much every Voice Of The Beehive single ever can be added to the list, however, especially Don't Call Me Baby and I Think I Love You.

alexfack, Saturday, 28 September 2002 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Brenda Russell-Piano in the Dark

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

efua - somewhere round the corner

minna (minna), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

haha... voice of the beehive! that reminds me of two more songs:

*the clouds - anthem (this was on the same 100% hits album as "i think i love you")

some guy sang "you're making me dizzy, my head is spinning... like a whirlpool, it never ends... and it's you girl, making it spin..."

i have a vague feeling that was a cover though.

oh, and one more:
fairground attraction - it's got to be perfect

minna (minna), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

oh sheila - ready for the world

"What's good for the goose...is good for the GANDER!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 September 2002 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

'uncertain smile' - the the
'perfect skin' - lloyd cole and the commotions
'eye know' - de la soul

should be mentioned in the same breath as god but aren't.

angelo (angelo), Sunday, 29 September 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The Lover Speaks, "No More I Love Yous"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 September 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Saskia, Sunday, 29 September 2002 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Owen Paul - "My Favourite Waste Of Time"
Amazulu - "Too Good To Be Forgotten"

and a million more.

some guy sang "you're making me dizzy, my head is spinning... like a whirlpool, it never ends... and it's you girl, making it spin..." - yes, that was UK comedian Vic Reeves with The Wonder Stuff, covering Tommy Roe's 60s choon.

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 29 September 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

MORE MORE MORE (this thread single-handedly justifies the box of discarded 'cassingles' under my bed from my pre-St Etienne days)

Lisa Stansfield - Time To Make You Mine/Change/All Woman (the singles from her second album 0WN3RZ ALL)
Annie Lennox - Walking On Broken Glass (really really really REALLY great, had tremendous drunken luvvy-cunt video and everything)
Belinda Carlisle - Big Scary Animal
Martika - More Than You Know
Dannii Minogue - Get Into You (Dannii RAWKS OUT)
Sophie B. Hawkins - Right Beside You
Des'ree - Feel So High
Tasmin Archer - In Your Care (she says "sonofabitch" in the chorus which is thrilling)
Gabrielle - Because Of You
Mono - Life In Mono
The Beautiful South - A Little Time

alexfack, Sunday, 29 September 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

...and, to state the obvious again, I'm On My Way and Hangover by Betty Boo are two of the great lost singles of the nineties.

And Face To Face by Siouxsie and the Banshees. And Uptight and One Goodbye In Ten and Inside Out by Shara Nelson. Now I STOP (perhaps).

alexfack, Sunday, 29 September 2002 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Fashion - 'Move On'. An 80's classic and no mistake

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What about Men Without Hats "Safety Dance"? Or has Homer singing it ensured it'll never be relegated to a dusty corner?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

VH1's (!) We Are The 80's is a great source for finding forgotten classics of that era. Sure, they'll play a few trite hits, but then they'll show Dino Jr's "Little Furry Things" or Holly and the Italian's "Miles Away". Really neat stuff, provided you can forgive the weird Hooties fetish.

Joshua Houk (chascarrillo), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"Echo Beach" - Martha and the Muffins. :D

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Synthpop rules! How about-

"One Night In Bangkok" by Murray Head, sooo gay and likeable... what a chorus "one night in bangkok makes a hard man humble" haha... I have never hear anythign else by this guy, where did he come from?

"Love is a Shield" by Camoflauge... I was surprised this song is a lot darker & better than anything else on that album. Then I found out it was written by this guy:

"Images of Heaven" by Peter Godwin, I got his "best of" he seems really obscure, it's really worth checking out, he worked with some really cool musicians, Bowie of course.

sucka (sucka), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Murray Head is related to Giles from Buffy

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 05:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Err.. wrong thread Jim! :D (or was it? heh)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

it could fit on both threads!

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, hehehe! :)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh ooh! I thought of another song, seeing as I was listening to it the other day:

"WoodBeez" by Scritti Politti. Hell, any of their fine singles really. Sorely forgotten band, that. One of the few 80s albums I own on CD and still love very much.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Camouflage "The Great Commandment" (best synthpop single ever)
Kym Sims "Too Blind To See It" (lots of handbag house singles still get played, somehow this one doesn't)
Pino D'Angelo "Ma Quale Idea"
Francesco Napoli "Balla Balla"
Sandra Kim "J'Aime La Vie" (it's been years since I last heard this)
And of course all the Modern Talking singles.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Robin Urban Cookie Collective was "The Key, The Secret", that old dance tune with the wacky "I've got the key, I've got the secret, I've got the key to walk another way". I remember it well.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

colin mcelligatt, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It don't heal clean, by Nathalie Archangel, from a really dire album, but the single (produced by Howard Jones) sounded like a Hounds of Love outtake.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

All of Neneh Cherry's "Raw Like Sushi" -- someone mentioned "Manchild," but that whole album holds up incredibly well and was so ahead of it's time.
Also -- "Mystify" by INXS, or a number of the songs off of "Kick."

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

_Kick_ is a stone classic album. "Need You Tonight" and "Devil Inside" are indispensible.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of my fondest childhood memories:

Bougeois Tagg, I Don't Mind At All

I spent a long drunken evening with a friend of mine once talking about this song when we were talking about songs we loved that no-one else knew. I'm so glad someone else remembers it too.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Magic Smile" Rosie Vela
"The Promise You Made" Cock Robin
"The Last Film" Kissing the Pink

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kick" is just OK in my book. Shabooh Shoobah = the best new wave rock album EVER. If I had 3 copies of this album, I would save one to listen to over and over and over and over, then I would spread the other 2 with peanut butter and jelly for a delicious INXS sandwich. When I get a CD copy I'm going to unravel all the tape, pour on spaghetti and eat it with a fork and a side of garlic bread. If I ever pierce my nipples I will do it so I can dangle copies of this album from each one. I... have to go play it now now now now!

sucka (sucka), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow I'm loving some of the things people are listing... forgotten gems! I have that King album in my collection, I used to love those guys. There was a weird song on it called "I Kissed the Spiky Fridge" (!!?? yes fridge not fringe). Damn 80s.
