MIGUEL - all i want is you - POLL

anyway i've softened on my stance that this album is far better than his new one, which has really grown on me, but i still feel like the range of emotion on this first album isn't really approached by the second - he's painting in such bold colors here - there's an openness that's kind of rare in my listening experience (again tonally more than lyrically maybe, there's certainly hints toward this in the words to "use me" for example). and while i get the feeling that this is considered kind of bloated to some there's really not many wasted moments here - the only song i'd cut is maybe the dre&vidal-produced "to the moon". (coincidentally he's mentioned in interviews that there's one song he fought to keep off the album, and something tells me it's that one.)

Will have a hard time picking anything but Sure Thing. Quickie probably second for me though.

spottie otm. "Teach Me" is good too, though. and damn i wish "Girls Like You" had been a hit.

"teach me" is my pick. there are a thousand little moments on here that especially reward close relistening; my favorite might be the second chorus of "teach me" where he draws out and inflects "only you caaaAAAN" - it's so pained, so longing - the kid really knew what he was doing at such a young age, nevermind what he says in interviews

"teach me" is my favorite miguel song period. then "adorn", then it's tough between sure thing/AIWIY/quickie/girls like you/use me

You could have titled this "All I POLL is You" and it would have still sounded like a Miguel title.

So I ONLY in the last month actually checked into this album and holy shit everybody is so right. This is great. I don't think I've digested it enough yet to pick something besides the singles.

yeah, i held off on the new one for just a couple weeks so i wouldn't get it completely tangled together with the first one - but it is GREAT too! going back to holding off on it though. but looking forward to caving in again.

i mean it's a great album and all but i could never pick anything other than sure thing

apart from "sure thing" nothing else on the album really rose above liking in a vague, non-committal way for me

I'm glad that "Sure Thing" didn't thoroughly rout this (but then since I voted "Quickie" I guess I would say that).

I had no idea that 'Quickie' was so highly rated, that's the one I usually skip on this.

It's so louche and roguish but at the same time much more warmly intimate than you'd expect for a song of its subject matter, and the chorus ("I don't wanna be loved" he protests, but he totally does) gives it this melancholy underpinning that plays at odds with all the rest of that.

"Quickie" also has a fantastic bridge - the whole "pillage and plunder [...] get rocked by this thunder" thing, really hooky and well-delivered.

“Sure Thing” reaches a new peak of #30 on the Billboard 100 (it stalled at #36 in 2011). it’s also #4 (!) in the UK, and charting all across the world (#4 in NZ, #8 in Lithuania, and so on). these aren’t “Running Up The Hill” stats, but it’s damn impressive.
