Who are your favorite black and death metal vocalists?

Although, like many, I had plenty of initial trouble getting into the extreme styles of vocals in black metal and death metal, I'm finding myself enjoying them more and more, and trying to figure out why I like certain voices and dislike others (hey, just like with any other genre). Who are your top five black and death metal vocalists? Mine (at the moment):

•Chuck Schuldiner, Death
•Quorthon, Bathory
•Jon Nodtveidt, Dissection
•Nocturno Culto, Darkthrone
•David Vincent, Morbid Angel

Shamaatae of Arckanum
Martin van Drunen of Asphyx/Pestilence/Hail of Bullets
Nergal of Behemoth
Pest of Gorgoroth
Tom G Warrior of Hellhammer/Celtic Frost

J. Read and Pete Helmkamp go pretty damn hard - can't really fuck wit their combined discographies (Conqueror, Oder From Chaos, Revenge, Angelcorpse, Axis of Advance, Black Witchery...).
And Quorthon is the once and future king.

Oh no, how could I forget Tom G. Warrior?! I feel bad... Siegbran, are Pest's vocals on those Gorgoroth records processed or are they really un-fucked-with??

Clarke B., Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta mention Will Rahmer of Mortician. Half the time he doesn't even sound like a human voice - sounds like bass amp distortion.

誤訳侮辱, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

I'm just listening to them for the first time, and man... The dude from Cryptopsy is unreal!

Clarke B., Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, lord worm is pretty excellent

original bgm, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago)

jon chang, discordance axis

original bgm, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:48 (thirteen years ago)

the guy that sounds like a frog, inquisition

original bgm, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 22:48 (thirteen years ago)

I might be in the minority on this, but I like what Xasthur/Malefic does (Did? He's been quiet..). Heavy processed, and buried in the mix. Not the best by far, though.

Nocturno Culto is up there, probably Ihsahn as well.

Mule, Wednesday, 14 November 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

Some unmentioned ones:

Micke Jansson (Unanimated)
Thomas AG Jensen (Saturnus)
Glen Benton (Deicide)
Karl Willets (Bolt Thrower)
Jan Chris de Koeijer (Gorefest)
Barney Greenway (Napalm Death)
Bill Steer (Carcass)

Also, goregrind processed vocals are great when they sound like a clogged drain (find Urine Festival on youtube).

ten months pass...

Jeff Walker (duh)
Dead (Mayhem)

Neanderthal, Friday, 11 October 2013 03:28 (twelve years ago)

Hoath Torog - Behexen
Tom G Warrior - Hellhammer
Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance - Beherit
Nocturno Culto - Darkthrone
Alan Dubin - Khanate

the tune was space, Friday, 11 October 2013 05:47 (twelve years ago)

Lori Bravo - Nuclear Death
Nocturno Culto definitely
Quorthon
Chris Reifert from Autopsy
Tom G. Warrior in Celtic Frost and Hellhammer
Paulus from Rites of Thy Degringolade
dude from Suffocation blew my mind the first time I heard him

Also a sucker for maybe not great vocalists who use the right amount of echo or short delay to give a cryptic reverberation - Von, Mortuary Drape, Vomitor, etc. And honorable mention to black-ish metal vocalists like Cronos and Big Boss from Root.

What, me infallible? (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 11 October 2013 08:22 (twelve years ago)

Missed van Drunen (especially on Consuming Impulse) and Kam Lee!

Attila for lols both on De mysteriis and that Sunn O))) album

Piggy (omksavant), Friday, 11 October 2013 10:06 (twelve years ago)

co-sign John Tardy from Obituary. Nocturno Culto obv. Yes to Quorthon. Agreed that Cronos can definitely be considered.

Neil S, Friday, 11 October 2013 11:04 (twelve years ago)

The singing on the new Carcass album is A+++++. Also often impressed by vocals on Gorgoroth tracks, but I understand they changed singers a lot so not sure who it would be.

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Friday, 11 October 2013 11:18 (twelve years ago)

Attilla's fucking awesome too. I love his Sunn O))) work (makes me think of Gary Oldman's Dracula).

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Friday, 11 October 2013 11:19 (twelve years ago)

yeah Jeff Walker from Carcass is great, good call

Neil S, Friday, 11 October 2013 11:23 (twelve years ago)

It's all about the intro vocals –

Lord Worm's high-pitched girly first scream on "Crown of Horns" (on None so Vile)
Noctorno Culto's belching start to "Kathaarian Life Code" (on A Blaze in the Northern Sky)
Nick Bullen's thick brummie "Genocoide. To the. Starving. Noiyshuns" at the beginning of Napalm Death, Scum

Sure there are many more amazing ones... always love the eternal question of what to do in the three seconds before you descend into an impenetrable wall of atonal malice

Piggy (omksavant), Friday, 11 October 2013 11:42 (twelve years ago)

Was going to say Lee Dorrian in Napalm Death but then my inner pedant was like that's not black OR death.

The singing on the new Carcass album is A+++++.

Walker sounds fucking amazing, really surprised at how well his voice has held up. I still miss Steer singing though.

What, me infallible? (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 11 October 2013 11:45 (twelve years ago)

finally managed to get a copy of tormentor's 'anno domini' and Attila's vocals on that are pretty fantastic too...

cb, Friday, 11 October 2013 12:17 (twelve years ago)

I still miss Steer singing though.

He sings quite a bit on the new one!

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Friday, 11 October 2013 13:32 (twelve years ago)

Attila on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas walks the line between Popeye and Marlon Brando attempting to talk while eating a ham sandwich

it's a truly unique performance

Neanderthal, Friday, 11 October 2013 13:52 (twelve years ago)

oh shit I forgot about Temple of the Maggot- bm band from Mongolia, their singer is reeediculous

Excellent list.

Missing: Jon Nödtveidt.

pomenitul, Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:24 (five years ago)

Tomas Lindberg too.

pomenitul, Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:26 (five years ago)

admittedly only listened to Dissection a handful of times despite liking Light's Bane.

xpost Lindberg's dece. idk if i'd put him on my list but I like him

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:27 (five years ago)

Too lazy to come up with a proper list rn, but Onielar would def be on it.

pomenitul, Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:32 (five years ago)

Frank Mullen's good on record, but he was phenomenal (and hilarious) live. Jazz hands! I remember seeing Suffocation at what I believe was his final NYC-area show — he pointed out his daughter (early 20s) hanging out at the side of the stage, and then dedicated "Breeding the Spawn" to her.

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:37 (five years ago)

I got to see him only once (it was always Ricky or someone else the other times), but I did put on their live cd once and was floored at how great he sounded on it.

that's a great story!

LaRusso Auto (Neanderthal), Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:41 (five years ago)

Agree with a lot of your choices. My own list:

Corpsegrinder
Jon Chang
LG Petrov
Johan Hegg
Tom G. Warrior
Phlegeton (Wormed)
Mortuus (Marduk, but I like him even better on Funeral Mist records)
Greg Mackintosh (Vallenfyre)
Champ Morgan (Kill The Client)

but also fuck you (unperson), Sunday, 27 September 2020 16:56 (five years ago)

LG's a great one. Forgot him
