I only like Norwegian rock, mainly for the melodies.

Hey, weren't you the one saying a.m.a. in-jokes weren't cool? ;-)

Mmmm, scandinavian rock. I saw a film recently called "Tilsammans" (or "Together" in English) about commune dwellers in 1975 Stockholm. The film had a great soundtrack of mostly contemporary Swedish hippy music. The only name I recognised was one Bo Hansson (of Lord of the Rings fame). Oh, and a little known pop band called Abba. It was all very enjoyable and I searched for the OST in vain on Amazon. Do any of our Scandinavian readers know if this was ever released on record in Sweden?

Hellacopters, baby. Yeeeeeeeowwwwwww! No one I know has captured the 70s era Detroit timeless loud rock and roll better than they have, though they occasionally have a tendency to slip away from Stooges/MC5 towards Kiss (who only sing about Detroit). Disappointment Blues was a favourite for me, but partly that's just because it's a nice short blast and doesn't have the time to get tiresome.

let me add that i'd appreciate it if folks could pick songs rather than albums as i'd like to, uh, sample their wares through the magic of the internet.

I was being totally serious! Dare you doubt my sincerity?

Anyway,I signed up as moderator as a means to crush you all. Once I get Josh out of the way, that is. ;-)

Nicole, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would never doubt your sincerity, Nicole, you'd call down the wrath of the heavens on me and I'd weep in terror. Help help!

I used to love The Nomads, a garage-punk band from Stockholm. They did a great album mainly of covers, called Outburst, I think, back in about 1984. All familiar stuff (Milk Cow Blues, I'm 5 years Ahead of My Time, I'm Not like Everybody Else), but absolutely blistering versions. The Watermelon Men were a similar, but gentler proposition - also Swedish.

For some Factory fans Norway's dull Fra Lippo Lippi may have been of passing interest around about the same time.

I relaise that the point of the question is to sort out the wheat from the chaff in a more current Nordic scene, but I'm afraid I can't help there. Sorry.

Search: The A*Teens and Entombed. I kinda like Scandinavia, as I've been reading about Swedish pop music all day.

james e l, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Combine the A*Teens and Entombed and you get the Backyard Babies, who are similarly gifted. Search: The Hellacopters - "A Cross for Cain", "Soulseller", Turbonegro - "Rendezvous with Anus", "Good Head", the Backyard Babies - "Bombed Out of My Mind", Entombed - "The Ballad of Hollis Brown", the Anal Babes - "Sam's Disciple", "Cocaine Swastika", the Brainbombs - "Anne Frank".

Kris, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

S(Z)AMLAS!!! Seriously, S(Z)amlas.

dleone, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
There's a few local bands out of Oslo that are worth yr time if you can find them--- Silver: (Riot 1,2,3), The Vendettas: (Rock n' Roll is Never Too Loud)... Those are two but Surferosa are pretty cool as well and if yr out there you'll bump into some more. Also all the obvious: Hives, Turbonegro, Int'l Noise Conspiracy, Hellacopters...
