"One Direction's "Live While We're Young" debuts at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, marking the highest bow by a U.K. group in the 54-year history of the chart.

It's the second-highest debut among all U.K. acts, outpaced only by Elton John's No. 1 arrival in 1997 with "Candle in the Wind 1997/Something About the Way You Look Tonight." The Princess Diana tribute single spent 14 weeks at No. 1."

Have I understood this right? Does this mean that 'Hey Jude' only entered the charts at no.10 in the USA? And that this was the seventh highest *ever* chart entry by a British act?

by boyband standards (these are low) they are towards the more attractive end of the spectrum. zayn is ridiculously pretty.

the correct answer to this question is either of the spice girls songs - these two are probably their best singles, might prefer "2 become 1"

"Get Back"

crüt, Friday, 23 November 2012 06:56 (twelve years ago)

prefer 'let it be' to 'hey jude', prefer 'get back' by some margin to both, prefer all 3's b-sides to the a-sides. curious what happens in the chart method (or perhaps radio or sales - though i really doubt that's the factor at work here) that makes those very late beatles singles debut so highly but not say 'i feel fine' or 'ticket to ride' etc.
there is this relative resurgence in popularity for the beatles in the late 60s that's interesting - obv ridiculously popular in the us from 64 on but from what i've seen of radio charts and year end billboard lists they're more successful (or more ridiculously successful is perhaps a better way to put it) as a singles act in 68-70 than they are 66-67 (not approaching 64-65 but that's more due to the difference in volume eg april 4, 1964 they have the top five singles in the chart while they only release five singles total 68-69). maaaaybe the stripped down return to roots less English sound was a factor but i can't imagine that's it really. hell maybe it was just the monkees cutting into their turf.

voted '2 become 1'. if i'd had a second vote it would've gone to spice girls also. kinda amazing also how few of these are post-itunes.

balls, Friday, 23 November 2012 07:40 (twelve years ago)

All my least favorite Beatles songs in one place! "Get Back" is alright but I hate hate hate hate hate "Hey Jude" and "Let It Be" so much and what the fuck even is the other one.

Voted for "2 Become 1" but would have gone for the Godzilla song on GP if I'd noticed it.

I like the Bill Withers version of "Let It Be" tho.

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Friday, 23 November 2012 07:52 (twelve years ago)

I like the Wilson Pickett version of "Hey Jude."

Room 227 (cryptosicko), Friday, 23 November 2012 07:54 (twelve years ago)

Don't necessarily dislike three of the four Beatles tracks here ("Free as a Bird" is crap), but I don't ever want or need to hear them ever again.

Room 227 (cryptosicko), Friday, 23 November 2012 07:57 (twelve years ago)

"let it be" is bad even by beatles standards but "hey jude" is a contender for the worst song EVER

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Friday, 23 November 2012 08:00 (twelve years ago)

^ love the name

'hey jude' is a song i can maybe retain some affection for in certain ways it's been abstractly sold to me - gospel hymn that suddenly turns into terry riley, the mother of power ballads (no 'hey jude' no 'bringing on a heartbreak', no 'i will always love you')- but these are all stretches at the very least. i can't imagine a circumstance where i'll be glad to hear 'hey jude', outside of some context like after hearing paul's 'my love' three times in a row, or 24 hours of 4 non blondes, etc. love the wilson pickett version but there's a long list of beatles songs where i prefer some sixties r&b artist's take on it.

balls, Friday, 23 November 2012 08:14 (twelve years ago)

I've probably told this story here before but I was one of the few black students at an all-white high school and even though my mom was a big Beatles fan, I managed to make it through the first 17 years of my life without hearing "Hey Jude". One day the school had an assembly that ended with them playing "Hey Jude". I was suddenly in a room with 2000 people singing in unison a song I had never heard in my life, one that felt like it went on for five hours. I have never felt a greater sense of alienation, of sheer lack of belonging, than in that moment. I've hated the song ever since.

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Friday, 23 November 2012 08:56 (twelve years ago)

My favourite Spice Girls song beats either weak or overplayed (or both) Beatles songs.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 23 November 2012 10:20 (twelve years ago)

Get Back is the only Beatles song here that doesn't completely blow but I'm tempted to vote for the Jimmy Page/Diddy Kashmir thing safe in the knowledge I haven't actually heard it at least 12 years.

Matt DC, Friday, 23 November 2012 10:39 (twelve years ago)

billstevejim, Friday, 23 November 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago)

b-side of "let it be" was "you know my name," not "long and winding road." brainfreeze moment.

billstevejim, Friday, 23 November 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago)

The communal CD player at my place of business for over a decade (where none of the employees were born pre-1970) has ensured that it will be another decade or so before I'm ready to give the Beatles (or Zeppelin, or Marley, or the Beach Boys) any serious attention.

Room 227 (cryptosicko), Friday, 23 November 2012 19:00 (twelve years ago)

I'd still rather listen to 'The Long And Winding Road' over any non-Beatles track on this poll, though. Ah man, those strings. Spector definitely got it right on that, no matter what McCartney says.
