topic came up in Year-End Critics' Polls 2012 of the rarity of good albums of new material by grizzled old vets. for the sake of this exercise i'm defining fossils as anyone who'd started establishing their legacy before the dawn of the '80s but i guess whatever definition works for you. mine:
Lou Reed & Metallica – LULUJonathan Richman - Because Her Beauty Is Raw and WildWalter Becker – Circus MoneyThe Who – Endless WireZZ Top – La FuturaElvis Costello & The Imposters – The Delivery ManLoudon Wainwright III - Older Than My Old Man NowDavid Byrne & Brian Eno - Everything That Happens Will Happen TodayPrince - 3121Little Feat - Rooster Rag

All of Peter Hammill's recent solo albums are good, the really great ones are Singularity and Thin Air.

Kate Bush - Aerial
^ would be my number one, but my mind is too tired to think of many more right now

Leonard Cohen - Old Ideas
― mike t-diva, Friday, 23 November 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)
Quickly cobbled together, I'd say mine is:
The B-52's - FunplexLeonard Cohen - Old IdeasOrnette Coleman - Sound GrammarBob Dylan - Love & TheftRobyn Hitchcock - Goodnight OsloLos Lobos - The Town and the CityMotorhead - The Word Is YoursWillie Nelson & Asleep at the Wheel - Willie and the WheelRobert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising SandZZ Top - La Futura
The Willie is a stretch, as it's mainly old covers. But it's too damn amazing to overlook. Could also throw in one pretty decent Judas Priest record, a couple of solid Iron Maiden ones, and the Heven and Hell record too, if you want more old metalheads.
Lots of grizzled vets still tear it up live and have put out good live records, but not really the purview of this thread.

Old Ideas and Aerial are the two that immediately spring to mind, in that they stand up against the artist's best work in a way that, say, the recent Dylan albums really don't. But then again I think a lot of Cohen's best records are from the 80s and 90s, so relatively late in his career anyway.

Funplex is a good one, almost made my 10. also forgot about Raising Sand, prob would've included that.

Grace Jones' "Hurricane" was pretty good
― goya cézanne (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 23 November 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)
I forgot about that one. It was pretty patchy but Williams Blood was so great that I was willing to forgive.

Yo La Tengo: And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out and Summer Sun. (They started early-mid '80s...close enough.)
All in all, I thought the last Wire album was good.

I wasn't sure whether to include Forster and the Go-Be's since they don't qualify under ship's criteria.

Paul Smon - You're The OneBob Dylan - "Huck's Tune"
May be easier to come up with the perfect 10-song mix (throw in some Keith Jarrett) than a list of albums.

I mentioned it elsewhere, but Bebe Buell's 2011 album Hard Love is really pretty good trashy glam-ish rock. I don't know if I'd call her a fossil, but she doesn't look as good now as she did when I got all excited by her Playboy appearance way back when...
