The Howling Hex- The Best of the Howling Hex out 2/19/2013 on Drag City

The Howling Hex are back in town - you can feel them in the air, man! The Best of The Howling Hex is a new album of new music by a new incarnation of The Howling Hex, now broadcasting as a band from the big town of Denver, Colorado. After years staked out in the border country of southern New Mexico, guitarist and leader Neil Hagerty is back in the phonebook, giving the Hex an urban soapbox on which to stand for the first time in their ten years of re-re-revisionist history.
Mile high style seems to be a good match for the mercurial back-road attire of The Howling Hex. For this new album, the wide-opens spaces and New Border rhythms of recent albums have been telescoped and accelerated into a high-stepping, uptempo night on the tiles. Kicking the beat with New Border funk is a rhythm section complete with drummer, last heard on a Howling Hex record back in 2007. Also redux is the functionality of the "ditty" - most recently experienced on Earth Junk. The Best of The Howling Hex includes seven shortish songs that weave the wild spirits and far-flung textures of Wilson Semiconductors into tightly compressed sing-songs, before turning the jam out to bring the levee home. Hagerty's guitar tone is an alien wonder, and the careening beat of the band unleashes him to fill solo spots with fervor.

After five years of wandering through the arid brush-country of Earth Junk and Wilson Semiconductors (as well as the sidetrack soundtrack adventure that was Victory Chimp, a Book), the days of the covered wagon seem to be behind The Howling Hex for the time being. However, the depth of the earth and the true direction of the wind are lessons learned from their years out there - they can't be unlearned. The Best of The Howling Hex is still square state rock with sharp corners; southern lights refocused on a more northern steppe, yet still awash in the vibration of the west, red as the rocks that the Indians danced upon not so very long ago. Their rhythm echoes in the Hex mix.

And so, The Howling Hex roll on, leaving the shell of their former creature to dry in the sun as ever before. Meanwhile, the border stretches on and on, an epic expanditure of time and energy. With so many incarnations of the band left to fossilize in the high desert, the dry washes and the broken country, the designation 'best' means, not even 'latest' but merely "this one." So here you go - the latest installation of primo New Border Sound, The Best of the Howling Hex.

Track listing: Built a Friend - Primetime Clown - Highlights - Electric Northern - Street Craps - The General Prologue - Green Limousine - Trashcan Bahamas

Yeah,I think I read that he wasn't too crazy about some of the added orkystrayshuns:
NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD MUSIC BY
TEXAS MUSICAL LEGEND TOWNES VAN ZANDT
TO BE ISSUED ON 2-CD SET BY OMNIVORE RECORDINGS

Sunshine Boy: The Unheard Studio Sessions & Demos 1971-1972
is a 28-track set featuring versions of notable songs from the artist’s most prolific period, 1971-72. Liner notes by Colin Escott.

AUSTIN, Texas — As musicologist Colin Escott writes in his liner notes for the upcoming Omnivore Recordings release of the late Townes Van Zandt’s Sunshine Boy: The Unheard Studio Sessions and Demos 1971-1972, “The art of Townes Van Zandt reveals a little at a time. Every hearing brings forth something you can’t believe you missed all the other times, or something that rings even truer today than way back when.”

Omnivore will give listeners more to discover in Townes Van Zandt when the 28-song, two-CD set is released on February 5, 2013. The recordings that comprise the set have been hidden away in the vault since their initial recording and are now presented with the cooperation of the estate. Due to acquisitions by various labels of the initial Poppy Records recordings, these session recordings have sat on the shelf with no one knowing quite where to find them — until now.

Following ten studio albums, several singles and several live albums, the troubled life of the influential singer-songwriter, performer and poet came to a close on New Years Day 1997.

Omnivore is pleased to finally be able to present, after many years in the works, a two-CD set of previously unavailable music from the Texas singer-songwriter’s classic albums High, Low & In Between and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt. One disc features outtakes and alternate takes/mixes of tracks from the sessions for those LPs; the other highlights solo demos. The set offers a window into the work that went into those two brilliant recordings, from a time when Van Zandt was at the height of his songwriting powers.

With alternate takes and mixes of songs like “To Live Is To Fly” (presented in both alternate take and demo form) and the classic "Pancho & Lefty" (a mix made alongside the known version, but without the strings and horns of the commercial version), Sunshine Boy is an essential release for all true Townes Van Zandt fans. The quiet and largely solo demo disc provides an intimate portrait of Van Zandt demo-ing songs, some of which would become his best-known compositions.

As Escott explains, “alternate versions add an entirely new dimension, like seeing someone you thought you knew so well in a new light. The new songs are simply good to have when it seemed the barrel was empty. And so here are more than two hours of Townes Van Zandt — music unheard since the engineer peeled off a little splicing tape to seal the box 40 years ago.”

Escott’s comprehensive liner notes, unseen photographs from the era and some entirely unheard songs, make this collection a must-have for fans of one of the best songwriters of his time.

ha, confusingly, that howling hex album is not in fact a "best of" but a brand new album.

tylerw, Friday, 30 November 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

omnivore also has these, they are doing some good stuff:
Buck Owens – Honky Tonk Man & Don Rich – Sings George Jones (Omnivore) – The San Joaquin Valley city with a population of just over 300,000 served as the Western counterpart to Nashville from the ’50s on through the ’70s, producing such stars as Buck Owens & The Buckaroos, Merle Haggard, and the Maddox Brothers & Rose. Owens and Haggard topped the country charts for decades while retaining their Central California roots. But it wasn’t until 2012 that Omnivore Recordings, digging a little deeper, found two albums worth of never-before-released music from the Buckaroos camp: Buck Owens’ Honky Tonk Man and Don Rich Sings George Jones. Both CDs are set for release January 23, 2013. The 18 tracks on Buck Owens’ Honky Tonk Man were culled from the vast trove of material he recorded at his Bakersfield studio for the rural hit comedy TV series Hee Haw in the early ’70s. Until his tragic death in 1974, guitarist, fiddler and vocalist Don Rich appeared on nearly all Buck Owens’ hit records, beginning in the late ’50s. Don Rich Sings George Jones is one of the most exciting country music discoveries in decades — the only solo album ever recorded by the legendary lead guitarist and harmony vocalist for Buck Owens & the Buckaroos. Even more amazing is the fact that this album sat in Owens’ tape vault — unreleased and long forgotten — until now.

Hence the following news from Janet Beveridge Bean--anyway, good excuse for a tour:

This is my first attempt at reaching out to press and radio since, I don't know, maybe the late 1980s? I believe Bettina, our label dominatrix, at Thrill Jockey Records has too much on her plate for our little tour, so in the spirit of Marx I'm going all "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" and just getting it done!. So forgive my lack of correct approach. My crazy neighbor, Sally Timms, from the Mekons, said "Janet, you can do this." And if you've ever been lucky enough to meet Sally you know that when she says march you march. Bloodshot records then pitched in an gave me their list of worthy contacts to which you are one.

Here's the story:

This tour came about out of the blue really. We shouldn't be touring since we don't have a new record out, but people kept asking us to play and we seem to have a perverse desire to head north in the winter; often it's the bitter climes of Germany it seems. This time we opted for stateside. Really we are touring on the re-release of Feels Like the Third Time. It's the 20th anniversary of its release, a crazy notion, that I still find hard to fathom. We will be playing it in its entirety along with other favorites. We have found a lot of our fans were having babies round the time the record came out and those babies were forced to listen to Freakwater more than any baby should. It turns out those babies, now the record buying public, have some sort of DNA thing going where they gotta hear the Freakwater. So really we're doing this for the kids.

I don't think we have played a proper tour in about 4 years, but we always stay busy. During our 4 year down time I released albums with my other bands eleventh dream day and The Horse's Ha; Catherine released an excellent solo record just this September; ( I think she may do a couple tunes from it at the show) Dave tours and records with the Reigning Sound and Morgan Geers' Drunken Prayer; and Jim Elkington, who will be joining us on this tour, is currently touring with Kelly Hogan and is then off to South America for a few shows with Stereolab's Laetitia Sadler. The rest of the time he plays with Doug McComb's non-Tortoise band, Brokeback, and then with me in the Horse's Ha. We are immensely looking forward to getting out there and playing Freakwater tunes and getting into trouble.

OMINVORE RECORDINGS CHRONICLES
THE CLASSIC YEARS OF
COUNTRY MUSIC PIONEERS WITH COLLECTIONS BY
WANDA JACKSON, GEORGE JONES AND MERLE HAGGARD

Ten-inch vinyl EPs made available on Black Friday provided a sneak preview of Merle Haggard’s The Complete ’60s Capitol Singles,
George Jones’ The Complete United Artists Solo Singles,
and Wanda Jackson’s The Best of the Classic Capitol Singles.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Omnivore Recordings will release definitive compilations by three giants of country and rockabilly music — Wanda Jackson, Merle Haggard and George Jones — on February 12, 2013. Having released musical appetizers in the form of ten-inch vinyl EPs on Record Store Day’s Back to Black Friday, Omnivore will serve the main course on compact disc in the form of Merle Haggard’s The Complete ’60s Capitol Singles, George Jones’ The Complete United Artists Solo Singles, and Wanda Jackson’s The Best of the Classic Capitol Singles. All three compilations feature A & B sides from the artists’ most influential years. The vinyl EPs were companion pieces, containing rarities not found on the CDs.

Wanda Jackson’s The Best of the Classic Capitol Singles contains 29 songs from her Capitol stint, which began in 1956. Each was taken from the original analog mono 45-rpm masters. Idolized by three generations of rockers, the Queen of Rockabilly made musical side-trips into country and gospel. For every A-side rave-up like “Mean Mean Man” or “Fujiyama Mama,” she offers B sides of equal intrigue: a weeper like “(Every Time They Play) Our Song” or the hillbilly tragedy of “No Wedding Bells for Joe.” She tore through songs that Elvis sang, and also drew from the jazz greats, R&B legends, doo-woppers and the Nashville hit machine. And she made each song her own.

In the ’50s, Capitol Records ad men scratched their heads, looking for a way to position Wanda Jackson’s sound, gamely settling on “jumping rock ’n’ waltz novelty.” Today, as she plays before indie-rock-aged crowds, supporting recent albums produced by Jack White and Justin Townes Earle, we know she’s no novelty. The Best of the Classic Capitol Singles, with extensive liner notes by Daniel Cooper, is her most definitive career retrospective to date.

Jackson’s Capitol label-mate Merle Haggard became one of country music’s greatest stars while recording his Bakersfield-honed songs at the tower at Hollywood & Vine from 1965 until 1976. The Omnivore compilation The Complete ’60s Capitol Singles features 28 A & B sides taken from the original analog mono 45-rpm masters. Neo-rockabilly artist and part-time journalist Deke Dickerson, a longtime Haggard fan, wrote the liner notes.

From “Swinging Doors” in 1965 until the end of the decade, Haggard had an impressive string of hits. “The Fugitive” (b/w “Someone Told My Story”), his first #1 single, was a composition by the esteemed songwriter Liz Anderson (Lynn Anderson’s mother). “I Threw Away the Rose” b/w “Loneliness Is Eating Me Alive” went to #2 on the charts in 1966. Other chart-toppers on this volume include “You Don’t Have Very Far To Go” b/w “Good Times” and “The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde” b/w “I Started Loving You Again.” “Working Man Blues,” written when Haggard “needed (his) own ‘Folsom Prison Blues,’” became a blue-collar anthem and shot to #1. The collection closes with “Okie From Muskogee,” the unlikely political pop crossover that sent mixed signals to younger listeners. Most have since delved deeper into Haggard’s five decades of music and consider him a hero. He continues to record today.

United Artists Records was eventually married to Capitol when it, along with parent label Liberty, was acquired by EMI in 1978. But when country star George Jones recorded for the label (following stints at Starday and Mercury) from 1962 til 1966, United Artists and Capitol were Hollywood crosstown rivals. It was at UA that Jones mastered all the flavors of country: lovelorn ballads, inspirational gospel, uptempo honky tonk, humorous novelty numbers, old-timey murder ballads — even holiday and Western songs. Most of his UA work was done in Nashville featuring the city’s A team: guitarist Grady Martin, pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins, bassist Bob Moore, drummer Buddy Harman and Hal Rugg on pedal steel. The Jordanaires provided background vocals.

Omnivore’s 32-song George Jones compilation, The Complete United Artist Solo Singles, leads off with chart toppers “She Thinks I Still Care” b/w “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win,” produced by the legendary Cowboy Jack Clement. Both sides of the single pointed the way to the sound that would mark his signature style in decades to follow. The collection also includes Jones’ 1965 smash “The Race Is On.”

“Country music is like a religion to me,” he told Holly George-Warren, author of this compilation’s liner notes. Jones’ early ’60s work for United Artists will make a believer out of you.

Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin -Reverse Shark Attack
Street Date, January 22nd, 2013, In The Red
Originally released in 2009 as a vinyl-only title on the Kill Shaman label, Reverse Shark Attack is a collaboration by two long time chums who grew up together in Laguna Beach. Both turned out to be hyper prolific singer/song-writer/musicians who recorded as solo artists as well as performing in bands such as the Sic Alps, Moonhearts, Epsilons and Okie Dokie. The result of this collaboration is an incredible shambolic 10-track delight of psychedelic garage jams that is sure to please the most scrutinizing rocker. Equal parts danceable garage rock and effects-ridden psychedelia,Reverse Shark Attack is a mind-blowing explosion of loud guitars, pounding rhythms and signature vocal harmonies. Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin balance perfectly between soprano and baritone vocals, making for outstanding results. The centerpiece of the album is the title track, a side-long epic that goes from Beatles-esque melody to psych/ folk weirdness then explodes into a Ventures-induced headache of smashed drums and wildly vibrant surf guitars. This is a must-have release for fans of these two artists, and nothing like either of their projects have done before.
Track List:
1. I Wear Black
2. Drop Dead Baby
3. High School
4. Ramona
5. Doctor Doctor
6. Bikini Babes
7. Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk
8. Reverse Shark Attack

Also!
The Traditional Fools - s/t
Street Date, January 22nd, 2013, In The Red

In The Red is proud to announce the re-release of the self-titled album by Ty Segall’s Traditional Fools. The Traditional Fools were a garage-punk-thrash-surf trio consisting of Ty, Andrew Luttrell and David Fox. They recorded and released their lone album back in 2008 - it sold out quickly and has never been re-pressed until now. Recorded live in the studio, Traditional Fools is low on fidelity and high in energy. The band’s sound is a perfect combination of 60s garage, vintage surf reverb and early LA punk performed with trashy reckless abandon. Covers by Redd Kross and Thee Headcoats give you an idea where these guys were coming from and songs about bikini babes and shredsticks tell you where these guys were at. Grab a bike, a tank top, sunglasses and every beer you can find and enjoy surf-punk done right.

Track List:

1. Davey Crockett
2. Snot Rag
3. T.L. Defender
4. Please
5. Layback!!!
6. Get Off My Back
7. Shredstick
8. Kill Someone You Hate
9. Valley (Of The Jams)
10. Party At My House
11. Milkman
12. All-Right

KILLING JOKE To Release The Singles Collection 1979-2012 This Spring Via Spinefarm/Universal

The Singles Tour Announced

With a fierce intelligence combined with a thirst for esoteric knowledge that matches a sound that is visceral and almost spiritual in its primal spirit, KILLING JOKE are like no other. This is a group spawned from punk rock that set out on one of the most remarkable and idiosyncratic journeys ever. Their influence has been enormous, with an unlikely roll-call of musicians taking their cues from the KJ catalog, from Nirvana to most modern American metal to many DJs and dance music mavericks. Few, however have come close to matching the band’s innate power.

The Singles Collection 1979-2012, set for release via Spinefarm/Universal on April 16, 2013, captures their ever-evolving story with a series of dark, apocalyptic songs that have successfully combined disco, funk and shamanic wisdom with the dark side of the punk fall-out. The Singles Collection 1979-2012 will be released in three formats: as a digital download, a limited edition 3-CD set and a super deluxe edition. View The Singles Collection 1979-2012 cover art at THIS LOCATION.

FLYING NUN TO PARTNER WITH CAPTURED TRACKS ON REISSUE PROGRAM
TOY LOVE TO KICK OFF REISSUE SERIES ON 2/19
Captured Tracks and Flying Nun have partnered up to manufacture and distribute the prestigious New Zealand label's back-catalog. Flying Nun began in 1981 in Christchurch, NZ and quickly established a roster of artists and DiY ethic that would go on to influence indie rock musicians and labels to the present day. Featuring such vanguard artists as The Chills, The Clean, Tall Dwarfs, The Verlaines, The Bats and countless others, the label made a huge impression on US and European underground music despite its geographically isolated locale. Original founder Roger Shepherd bought back the rights to the label from WB in late 2009 which has ultimately led to Brooklyn label Captured Tracks involvement.

The partnership plans on releasing a large quantity of currently out of print titles from the labels most prominent and most obscure releases, from their earliest releases through the catalog. Starting with the 2xLP Toy Love (pre-Tall Dwarfs/Bats) compilation that was recently issued in NZ, future projects include boxed sets, expanded reissues of 12" EP's, 7"s, LP's on all formats as well as posters, shirts and various other items from Flying Nun's deep archives.

ABOUT TOY LOVE

The 28-track compilation collects all the A & B sides of the three Toy Love singles, plus the best demos from 1979, a live track and even a radio jingle. All mastered for vinyl, straight from the original analogue tapes, no nasty CDs nor digital sources were used at all.

Housed in a gatefold jacket, a 24 page booklet accompanies the release with photos, ephemera and commentary from Toy Love. While, the back cover features a sketched cartoon of an early Toy Love flyer drawn by Chris Knox.

Evolving from Dunedin band, The Enemy, Toy Love had a brief but bright existence between January 1979 and September 1980. Invoking the ghost of punk and the melody and creativity of 60-70s pop, they were peerless at a time when New Zealand music was still struggling to imprint itself on the national consciousness. They became a model for local musicians around the country and inspired the birth of Flying Nun Records – a label which many from the band went on to work with, including Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate with the Tall Dwarfs and Paul Kean with The Bats. Then, in 2005 Flying Nun released Cuts, a double CD anthology of Toy Love material.

Electrifying and unmissable, Toy Love made an impact on all who saw then, and continue to do so around the world today.

I wonder if the Van Zandt reissue contains any of the Jack Clement productions? Speaking of Omni, I've been listening to the two reissues they did of the Stonemans' stuff done for MGM and RCA in the late '60s and into 1970, produced by Clement. Omni's notes say the songs contain elements of "sunshine pop" which I don't hear so much; but they are very interesting and sometimes berserk bluegrass-inflected pop-folk tunes with lotsa crazed instrumental breaks, and lots of Clement tunes, including his "The Five Little Johnson Girls," which mentions space travel, and "West Canterbury Subdivision Blues," which is kind of a pop-folk-country "Pleasant Valley Sunday." I wonder if the George Jones thing doesn't just replicate tracks you can get elsewhere?

Edd Hurt, Sunday, 6 January 2013 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

Morello has reissued 4 George Jones albums from the '70s. I included their The Grand Tour and Alone Again from 2012 in my Scene country ballot, because Alone Again[ is one of the half-dozen best Jones LPs (along with If My Heart Had Windows on Musicor and I Am What I Am and The Battle, the latter on Epic). They should have reissued I Wanta Sing but haven't yet, for whatever reason, but that's another really good one, includes "Old King Kong." Didn't see any listings for 2013 yet.

Who's That Man – A Tribute To Conny Plank
To be released in February on Grönland Records, great first paragraph on his artist page on their website:

It is the mid-1980s and a British colleague introduces a German producer to a band from Dublin, Ireland. The Brit is convinced the German is the right man to produce the band’s next album. However, after a brief meeting with the band, the German comes to a completely different conclusion. “I cannot work with that singer,” he says, turning the job down. “That singer” was Bono Vox, the band U2, the album The Joshua Tree, the British producer Brian Eno and the German producer Conny Plank. This story is typical of Conny Plank. His contemporaries describe him as an extremely amiable producer, yet he could quickly forget all graciousness when it came to issues like work ethic and the ignorance of the media and the music industry.

NUMERO TO ISSUE LIVE CODEINE LP FOR RECORD STORE DAY 2013

Following in the snow tracks of When I See The Sun, Numero Group's massive, near-complete Codeine overview, comes What About The Lonely, an eight song LP recorded at the group's live zenith. Captured direct from the mixing board at a stop on Codeine's November 1993 swing through the Midwest opening for Mazzy Star, the album finds the trio of Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Doug Scharin running through their hits at Chicago's notorious Lounge Ax for a crowd of chatty 120 Minutes fans. Gastr Del Sol's David Grubbs joins for two songs on guitar, slinking on and off the two foot stage with little fanfare, but leaving an indelible mark on the performance.
Constructed for Record Store Day 2013, What About The Lonely will be issued as a one-time pressing of 2000 150 gram LPs. There will be no CD or digital component.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LENA HUGHES 'Queen of the Flat-Top Guitar' out Jan 29, 2013
Reissue of Impossibly Rare early 60's LP. New notes by JOHN RENBOURN
CD/LP/DL out January 29, 2013 on Tompkins Square

A musical "amateur" that best exemplified true artistry, Lena Hughes was born in Grape Grove Township, Missouri, in 1904. Though she never recorded any 78s and only one LP, Hughes was most influential through her steady performances at various fiddler conventions and folk festivals throughout the Ozarks. She was an excellent fiddler, banjoist and guitar picker who retained the largely extinct repertoire of parlor pieces and the variety of specialized tunings that were necessary to play them. She lived most of her life in Ludlow, Missouri and passed away in 1998.

Lena Hughes' repertoire can be divided roughly in half: finger-picked numbers adapted from fiddle tunes and recast parlor guitar pieces gleaned from popular sentimental songs, hymns, and 19th century airs. As a faithful attendee at folk festivals, Hughes was accompanied by her guitar-playing husband, Jake. Her most mesmerizing performances, such as Pearly Dew, Spanish Fandango, and Kentucky Moon Waltz, depend heavily upon the resonance of the open chord as it relates to the picking of the melodic line, primarily on one string. This tonal reliance is most similar to the "celestial octave" that Washington Phillips employs, with similar effect, on his Train Your Child. This ethereal harmonic technique, which seems so natural in Hughes' playing, is the holy grail for most finger-picking guitarists. Her lack of pretense and her mastery of this repertoire is what defines her legendary status.

These recordings were made in the early 60's in Arkansas and released in very limited fashion as a private press LP. Remastered by Chris King. Designed by Susan Archie. New liner notes by JOHN RENBOURN.

MARTIN REV – S/T
• First time vinyl reissue of Suicide instrumentalist’s debut solo
album
from 1980
• Originally released on preeminent No Wave label Infidelity
(Lust/Unlust)
• Insert includes new Rev interview by musician/critic Alan Licht
• For fans of Suicide, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Air

Released shortly after Suicide’s second full-length, Martin Rev was freed
to explore his most experimental and pop leanings with dirty synths, dark
melodies and dreamlike textures, and produced a masterpiece of modern
alienation that captures a uniquely New York landscape. Rev's debut echoes
other electronic forerunners such as Silver Apples and Kraftwerk, and
foreshadows the work of Aphex Twin and Air.

100 FLOWERS – S/T
• First time reissue of underground Los Angeles classic from 1983
• For fans of The Urinals, The Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Desperate
Bicycles
• “Cool musicality with critical intelligence. And they thrash on a
high
level.” —Thurston Moore

100 Flowers (previously known as The Urinals) were a power trio whose sole
1983 album is an enduring document of the Southern California underground.
100 Flowers crafted a sound that rests between the inspired bursts of The
Minutemen, pastoral jangle of the Dream Syndicate and oblique approach of
Monitor and The Gun Club. The trio wielded a gripping visual aesthetic and
hyper-literate lyrical content that reflected their art-school
backgrounds, while a ferocity borne out of their bleak urban environment
permeates their songs.

I was emailing w/ Superior Viaduct a year or two ago and suggested they do 100 Flowers and Monitor! Whether I had any influence or not, pretty excited. Big big fan.

ha, i got the press release and wondered why acute wasn't doing the 100 Flowers thing!

tylerw, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

I was interested at some point but it was listed as coming out on a label called Warning Label or something for years, but I don't think it ever happened, but that's why I didn't pursue it at a time when I may have had the energy and means.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 05:01 (thirteen years ago)

Speaking of Monitor, did anyone ever reissue their s/t on CD?

COME ON... A LITTLE CLOSER... YES! SQUIRREL BAIT!
Louisville's been a pipe-line of pure hot bed (hot bed of pure pipe-line?) for Drag City singers and songs and sounds for dang near decades now, some of which we've even resurrected from a time prior to our own birth (These two hands... our clay children!)! One such band bore the likes of long time DC artist-in-residence David Grubbs, as well as the the Palace-collabing and Slint foundling bros, Brian McMahon and Britt Walford (along with the man called M, "Papa" David Pajo) - yes, that's right, the seminal punk outfit, Squirrel Bait. Squirrel Bait may've been rocking out before you were born (circa '85-'87, in case you were wondering what years existed before you were born), but (visually) excitingly, they were barely outta diapers themselves when they made these tunes, from "Hammering So Hard" and "Sun God" to "Black Light Poster Child and "Too Close To the Fire."
What were they gonna do? It was the mid 80s, they were young teens in Louisville, punk rock was less than ten years old and hard rock wasn't much older and was as much fun to play as the punk shit! Nothing else to do but write some songs in the negative, expressing themselves through a refusal of rules perceived in the songs they loved and hated! What else, bookish pre-internet teenagers from the past? How about shying away from angst and transparent confession lyrically, and instead portraying hard-edged, decadent youth scenes in fictive brush-strokes, without glorifying or even explaining what they're about? Yes, and yes! Then they drowned the songs and lyrics and meanings in a cacaphony of thunderous drums, strangely indistinct guitars, and insistent power changes and choruses. Check, and mate! There's nothing to do but flip the record and drop the needle again. And now, there's no asking why - because both the self-titled EP and full-length LP, Skag Heaven, are back in print on the vinyl format for the first time in an internet generation (approximately 5 years)! Available for you, for now, as long as they're available - so get 'em from us here, now or go out and grab 'em at your local brick and mortar, horder!

THE NUMERO GROUP BEGINS SAN ANTONIO EXCAVATION

TWO RELEASES PLANNED TO LAUNCH SERIES, INCLUDING REISSUE OF DJ SHADOW-SANCTIONED FUNK GROUP MICKY & THE SOUL GENERATION

Eccentric Soul: The Dynamic Label - March 19, 2013

Iron Leg: The Complete Mickey & the Soul Generation - May 2, 2013

Born out of the largesse created from Rene & Rene's Hot 100 Tejano tornado "Angelito," Dynamic Records was but one of half a dozen labels run by San Antonio music and real estate mogul Abe Epstein. His flag ship group, The Commands, took their AFB circuit-honed chops up to the middle of the charts in 1966 with "No Time For You," paving the way for 20 other soulful singles over Dynamic's impressive two and a half year run. Epstein's open door policy led to a diverse cross section of the population converging inside his studio on General McMullan Drive, as whites, blacks, and Latinos were swapped in and out of groups as needed. That melting pot mentality is well represented by The Tonettes, Little Jr. Jesse & the Tear Drops, Don & the Doves, Willie Cooper & the Webs, Bobby Blackmon & his Soul Express, and Doc & Sal.

Erupting at the same time, but at a different studio, was the mixed instrumental combo Mickey & the Soul Generation. Best known for their 1969 paper hit "Iron Leg," the group came to semi-national attention following Nipsey Russell's performance of the Iron Leg dance on Johnny Carson. Though they shared a label with Ben E. King, they lacked access to the same promotion and marketing resources. A tour with Sam & Dave and opening slots for James Brown, Kool & the Gang, and The Supremes found them performing for thousands nightly, but still sleeping on floors. By the mid-'70s the group had fractured, with members joining the army, bottling Coke, and starting families. Their run would end in 1977 with two members turning in a passing Average White Band impression called "Southern Fired Funk" before their handful of 45s fell completely out of vogue and made their journey to thrift shops and cut-out distributors.

At the dawn of the century, Josh Davis (AKA DJ Shadow) tracked Mickey and his Soul Generation down for the purpose of reissuing their recordings on his upstart Cali-Tex label. "Mickey and the Soul Generation are my favorite funk band," Davis wrote in 2002. "They were strong contenders for the title from my very first listen back in '92. 'Iron Leg' being the standout track on an otherwise flaccid jazz-funk compilation of the day. Already a favorite rare-groove selection in the ever-accepting UK club scene, I too found myself buoying my bedroom DJ sets with snatches of the irresistible Soul Generation Sound. It became an instant priority of mine to locate an original." That 2003 reissue was met with critical praise, and ultimately turned a new generation of music lovers onto rare funk and soul. Numero has gone back to the scene of the crime and re-canvased for new leads, helping Davis expand on his original work, with updated liner notes, tons of newly discovered photos, and a previously unreleased track.

These two albums represent Numero's first forays into a seemingly bottomless well of San Antonio soul, R&B, funk, Latin, and garage. This scorched earth campaign will continue into 2014.

NUMERO TO REISSUE HÜSKER DÜ EARLY RECORDINGS FOR RECORD STORE DAY

DOUBLE 7" COMPILES EARLY FOUR SONG SESSION FROM 1980 INCLUDING PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE SONG "WRITER'S CRAMP"

LISTEN TO THE LONG LOST ORIGINAL STUDIO MIX OF "STATUES" HERE:

http://soundcloud.com/biz-3-publicity/h-sker-d-statues
In August of 1980, Grant Hart, Bob Mould, and Greg Norton booked time at Minneapolis' Blackberry Way Studio to record what would become their debut 7". A deal with Twin/Tone was thought to be in the bag but was derailed by the fall 1980 signing of the Replacements - Hüsker Dü's then-chief rival. With a Twin/Tone rejection letter in their pocket, a scathing version of "Amusement" was thrashed out live at Duffy's, and plans were made for a self-released four song 10", with Blackberry Way cuts "Statues," "Writer's Cramp," and "Let's Go Die" making up the balance. The enormous start up cost for a debut release forced a format change, and in January of 1981 Reflex Records #A, "Amusement" b/w "Statues," found its way to market. The single would find two pressings over the next few years, but fall out of print as the band's style changed from Metal Box-esque post-punk to Los Angeles-inspired hardcore.

Hüsker Dü would, of course, build from this auspicious DIY effort to record classic albums for SST and Warner Brothers throughout the 1980s, before imploding prior to the decade's close. These early moments of brilliant naiveté have remained unknown to the band's ever-expanding fan base, primarily discovered on out of reach walls at used record stores the world over. Until now.

For Record Store Day 2013, Numero will issue "Amusement" b/w "Statues" and the studio alternates "Writer's Cramp" and "Let's Go Die" as a 2x7". The Blackberry Way cuts have been remastered from a first generation sub-master (the originals have long been lost), while "Amusement" was cut from the original live board tape. The original artwork has been polished and beefed up with a 28pt board gatefold jacket. Pressed in an edition of 4000, this deluxe reissue should satiate a new generation of Hüsker lovers. For at least another 33 years, anyhow.

GENE CLARK’S HERE TONIGHT: THE WHITE LIGHT DEMOS
COMING FROM OMNIVORE RECORDINGS ON MARCH 26

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — By 1970, weary and wary of the fame game in Los Angeles with the trappings of “the star-maker machinery” surrounding him at every turn, ex-Byrds songwriter and singer Gene Clark was looking for a refuge. On March 26, 2013, Omnivore Recordings will release Clark’s Here Tonight: The White Light Demos, a glimpse into the songwriting craft of Clark at the inception of the compositions that would become his first ’70s solo album, White Light, for A&M Records, released in August of 1971.

Of the tracks on this 12-song album, six (“White Light,” “For a Spanish Guitar,” “Where My Love Lies Asleep,” “The Virgin” “Because of You” and “With Tomorrow”) appeared in final form onWhite Light. Two (“Opening Day” and “Winter”) appeared in final form as bonus tracks on the 2002 A&M/Universal reissue of the album. One track (”Here Tonight”) is an alternate version of a song that appeared on the Flying Burrito Brothers compilation Honky Tonk Heroes. And three songs (“For No One,” “Please Mr. Freud” and “Jimmy Christ”) have never been issued previously in any form. Liner notes are by John Einarson, author of Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life and Legacy of Gene Clark (Backbeat Books, 2005). The collection is being reissued with the full cooperation of the estate of Gene Clark.

Precipitating Clark’s move to a secluded life in Northern California, events of the prior four years had elevated the reclusive Kansas-raised boy to the top of the rock ’n’ roll pantheon. The Byrds had topped the charts with their 1965 debut single, “Mr. Tambourine Man” and followed it with a string of folk- and country-influenced songs, many of them from Clark’s own pen. With a little help from Bob Dylan, the Byrds gave rock a literary sensibility. In his own songwriting, Clark had come to embrace the Dylan style of oblique lyric poetry and accrued considerable attention for his songs, to the chagrin of his band mates. Fissures in the band hierarchy ensued.

With his sudden departure from the Byrds in 1966, Clark withdrew from the public eye. His attempt at a solo career later that year was hampered by a reluctance to tour or fly (earning him the title of “the Byrd who wouldn’t fly”). Teaming up with banjo demon Doug Dillard in 1968, the Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark recorded two trail-blazing country-rock bluegrass band around Gene’s well-crafted songs. By early 1970, he left the band, left L.A. for the open spaces of Little River, Calif., near Mendocino, accompanied by his girlfriend Carlie McCummings. The two were equally captivated by the tiny seaside community and were married in June of that year.

Away from the pressure of the music business and inspired by the pastoral beauty of the area, Clark began to write songs that took on a reflective, introspective direction. His songs became more folky and stripped down as Clark swore he’d never again play electric guitar.

“There was no deadline,” says McCumming. “He wasn’t under any pressure. And as a result, the songs just flowed out of him. The lyrics were so pure. They don’t come out of any manufactured experience.” Clark also began exploring the nature of spirituality and the human condition in his lyrics, inspired by friend Philip O’Leno. At the end of the Dillard & Clark partnership, Gene owed A&M Records two additional albums. Company co-founder Jerry Moss himself paid Gene a visit in Little River and managed to entice him and Carlie back to L.A. to record. Jesse Ed Davis, with whom Gene had struck up a friendship during the Dillard & Clark sessions, was enlisted to produce.

Clark first recorded the songs meant for the White Light album in demo form on acoustic guitar. It’s these demos, lost for decades and recently discovered, that comprise Here Tonight: The White Light Demos with the songs presented as Clark had originally conceived them in his Mendocino Coast cabin. “His voice was absolutely perfect at that point,” notes Carlie. Included are songs that would later appear on the A&M debut, as well as several that failed to make the cut. Jesse Ed Davis maintained much of the simplicity and honesty of the demos in producing the finished album.Rolling Stone drew comparisons to Clark’s mentor Bob Dylan. It was voted “album of the year” in the Netherlands, whereupon Clark boarded a rare airplane to tour internationally.

Sadly sales were slim. Clark returned to Northern California to write the next album at his own pace. Eventually he returned to L.A. to sustain his career. The rigors of the road eventually tore his marriage apart, leading to a tailspin of alcohol, drugs and death in 1991. He was 46.

As biographer and reissue annotator John Einarson writes, “In the intervening decades, the songs Gene Clark wrote and demoed for White Light, offered here, stand as a deeply personal statement to an enduring talent at peace with himself, his surroundings and his life choices.”

ALIVE NATURALSOUND RECORDS TO REISSUE SOUL LEGEND SWAMP DOGG'S NEWLY REMASTERED FIRST TWO SEMINAL ALBUMS FROM THE EARLY '70S: TOTAL DESTRUCTION TO YOUR MIND & RAT ON! ON MARCH 5TH!

Maverick soul artist Swamp Dogg (aka Jerry Williams) has been described as the “soul genius that time forgot," and “a strange combination of Sly Stone’s progressive funk with Frank Zappa’s lyrical absurdism." In the '70s he even made the famed Nixon’s Enemies List.

Alive Naturalsound Records is proud to bring you Swamp Dogg’s first two albums, newly remastered and re-released for the very first time on vinyl since their original release in the early '70s. Total Destruction To Your Mind (1970), has been called “one of the most gloriously gonzo soul recordings of all time," while Rat On! (1971) was ranked as having one of the top ten worst album covers of all time, an achievement that Swamp Dogg is rightfully proud of to this day.

The two remastered reissues of Swamp Dogg's early '70s albums Total Destruction To Your Mind and Rat On! will be available on Black Vinyl and CD on March 5th. In addition, there will also be a very limited pressing of Colored Vinyl for both albums exclusive to mailorders through Bomp!

"He sings like some unfrozen Atlantic soul man of the sixties - his voice clarion pure, his phrasing a model of smoldering restraint." - ROLLING STONE

"He's made some of the maddest, funny, baddest, odd, angry, funkiest soul records." - MOJO

"Vocally, Swamp Dogg sounds like a cross between General Johnson (of Chairmen of the Board) and Van Morrison; as a songwriter, he’s his own man. With the exception of Sly Stone, no other soul men of the period were investigating controversial topics with such infectious musicality and good humor." – AMG

SKYDOG: THE DUANE ALLMAN RETROSPECTIVE
CHRONICLES GROUNDBREAKING GUITARIST’S CAREER,
FROM GARAGE BANDS AND R&B SESSION WORK
TO THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AND DEREK & THE DOMINOS

Seven CD set, due out March 5 on Rounder Records,
includes rare recordings by Allman’s early bands:
the Escorts, Allman Joys, the 31st of February, and the Bleus.
Extensive liner notes are accompanied by a tribute from Allman’s daughter.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Even if he’d never formed the Allman Brothers Band, Duane Allman would be a major figure in American popular music. Long before his name became known to mainstream audiences, he had already established his credentials as a once-in-a-lifetime guitar visionary, leaving his unmistakable stamp on a broad array of recordings. On March 5, 2013, Rounder Records, a division of Concord Music Group, will release the most ambitious retrospective of Allman’s short but influential career titled Skydog: The Duane Allman Retrospective.

The deluxe seven-disc collection, carrying a list price of $139.98, contains the guitarist’s best-known and most commercially successful recordings with the Allman Brothers Band and Derek & the Dominos, as well as session work with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, Clarence Carter, King Curtis, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, Ronnie Hawkins, Otis Rush, Laura Nyro, Lulu, the Sweet Inspirations, Laura Lee, Spencer Wiggins, Arthur Conley, Willie Walker, the Lovelles, the Soul Survivors, Johnny Jenkins, John Hammond, Doris Duke, Eric Quincy Tate, Herbie Mann and more.

The set was produced by Galadrielle Allman (Duane’s daughter) and two-time Grammy® winning producer Bill Levenson. Rounder Records’ Scott Billington served as executive producer. Scott Schinder contributed comprehensive historical liner notes, complemented by additional notes by Galadrielle Allman.

In her recollection of her father, who died when she was a young child, Galadrielle writes, “I am very lucky that my father is Duane Allman, an artist who left behind a wealth of incredible music . . . Working on this retrospective, I have gotten closer than I ever have been to understanding my father’s development as a musician and a man.”

Duane Allman, known to his bandmates as Skydog, was born in Nashville in 1946. With Gregg, his only sibling, Duane had his first moment of musical revelation upon witnessing a late ’50s R&B bill that featured B.B. King and Jackie Wilson. By 1960, both Duane and Gregg owned guitars and played in a series of neighborhood garage bands in Tennessee and Florida. Continuing their interest in blues and R&B in the shadow of blues radio station WLAC-AM’s continent-spanning signal, as well as absorbing the influence of the British Invasion, the brothers launched the Escorts in 1965 and the Allman Joys, who recorded a handful of sides in Bradley’s Barn in Nashville in 1966. By 1967, Duane and Gregg signed to Liberty as the Hour Glass and recorded two albums in Nashville and Los Angeles. When the band sought to defy the label and spread its musical wings, they were dropped. The brothers returned to Florida, hooked up with drummer Butch Trucks, and recorded two sides as the 31st of February, and later at Ardent Studio in Memphis as the Bleus.

By this time Duane had developed a reputation as a leading session guitarist. He was on Fame Studio’s A list, his guitar licks coloring hits by Wilson Pickett. Atlantic Records producer and executive Jerry Wexler took note and hired him to perform on Atlantic sessions by King Curtis, Otis Rush, Arthur Conley, the Soul Survivors and Sweet Inspirations. Wexler signed him to a solo Atlantic deal, resulting in a session that contained the raucous original “Happily Married Man” and more. The session, contained on the Skydog set, was abandoned mid-stream. But by then Capricorn Records’ Phil Walden had noticed the rumblings from Muscle Shoals. Duane gathered up brother Gregg, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, Jai Johanny Johanson and others and the Allman Brothers Band was born.

According to reissue annotator Schinder, “The [Allman Brothers Band’s] music was complex and adventurous, yet unfailingly accessible. The subtle and harmonic interplay between Duane and Dickey’s dual lead guitars was matched by the three-man rhythm section’s surging, swinging cross-rhythms, with Gregg’s massively expressive singing and organ playing keeping the music firmly grounded in human emotion.” The band’s profile grew with each release — the self-titled debut, Idlewild South and eventually the band’s breakthrough, At Fillmore East.

Testament to his energy and ambition, Duane still found time for side projects. When bandmates would hole up at home after tours, Duane joined fellow world-class guitarist Eric Clapton on Derek & the Dominos’ Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. While not an official member, he quickly emerged as a major contributor to the classic album, his twin guitar interplay with Clapton shaping the hits “Layla” and “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad.” He also worked with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends and Laura Nyro between Allman Brothers Band projects.

By then acknowledged as one of rock’s premier guitarists, Duane and the Allman Brothers Band began recording their follow-up to At Fillmore East — Eat a Peach. Tom Dowd, another legendary Atlantic house producer, oversaw sessions at Criteria Studios. Then on October 29, 1971, four days after Fillmore had been certified gold, Duane was riding his motorcycle and swerved to avoid hitting a truck. He crashed and died of internal injuries. He was 24 years old.
The band forged ahead as a quintet on Eat a Peach, which became one of their best selling albums. The Allman Brothers, led by Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks, continue to perform to this day.

Schinder notes, “More than four decades after his death, Duane Allman remains a towering figure whose stature has only increased in his absence. His influence lives on, not only in the multiple generations of guitarists who have been motivated by his input, but also in the legions of listeners who have continued to find inspiration in his vibrant vision of American music, which remains as fresh and truthful today as when it was created.”

“When a musician of my father’s caliber dies, every note he ever recorded becomes even more precious,” writes Galadrielle. “Each song is pressed into the service of telling his story. The longer Duane is gone, the clearer it becomes that there will never be another like him.”

Over seven discs, Skydog tells the Duane Allman story with rare and never-before-heard gems alongside smash hits.

“I hope the celebration of Duane’s life inspires you to live fearlessly and enjoy life,” Galadrielle concludes. “I know that would have made him proud.”

I mean I'm totally excited about the vault stuff, too, it just seems really weird to put out all of this stuff and this documentary and not have the proper albums be available.

JELLYFISH LIVE RADIO PERFORMANCES
TO BE RELEASED AS RADIO JELLYFISH
ON OMNIVORE RECORDINGS ON DECEMBER 10

Collection of never-before-issued Dutch and Australian recordings
coming on CD and limited-edition clear vinyl.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — In their continuing celebration of ’90s pop-rockers Jellyfish, Omnivore Recordings will release Radio Jellyfish, a 10-track collection of acoustic radio performances, on December 10, 2013. Nine of the tracks have never before been released.

Even though the group lasted for only two albums and four years, their influence on power-pop bands since has been as profound as the bands that Jellyfish were influenced by: Cheap Trick, Big Star, Badfinger, Raspberries, Brian Wilson, and more.

At the end of 1989, a television program called MTV Unplugged premiered. The premise was quite simple — artists performing their hits in minimal arrangements with acoustic instruments. It became a musical and cultural juggernaut. That leads us back to Radio Jellyfish — ten tracks culled from two international radio stops, one in Holland, the other in Australia, in 1993, that showcase Jellyfish unplugged.

The foursome — at this time Andy Sturmer, Roger Manning, Tim Smith and Eric Dover — played tracks from both LPs, and some covers. Even taken out of the studio, and away from the concert stage, the sound is unmistakably Jellyfish. It’s been well documented that the band could replicate the enormous sound of their albums through releases like Live at Bogart’s and a bevy of B-sides. But, apart from one track first released on the out-of-print Fan Club box set (and included here), acoustic Jellyfish — without a net — has not been explored. That’s nine previously unissued performances, tracks unheard since their international broadcast two decades ago.

While the instrumental Stack-a-Tracks showcased the band’s studio prowess, and Live at Bogart’s put listeners in the club, Radio Jellyfish offers the bare essence of why Jellyfish is beloved: the voices, the songs. They’re there in the same way they have been in every other release, and in a way fans never heard them.

Tune in to Radio Jellyfish.

Pretty happy this exists:

Aquariana's album is vocal and piano, the latter sometimes distorted, but the voice is strong, sweet and initially engaging: "Man is the Bride of God, Woman is the Bride of Man/God makes love to Him, He makes love to Her", though her lyrics don't grab these uninitiated ears after that. Devotional, but also like a home audition tape for Hair: The Love Rock Musical (except not as catchy as anything from the show)Check that Source Family soundtrack: good jams on there (I also wanna try Drag City's reissue of The Thought Adjusters, and some other related on Amazon)
Then there's this

Today, SUNN O))) has unveiled a massive online entity through a newly-developed webstore/online presence.

The SUNN O))) (virtually/online) site is now the direct outlet for not only all releases from the long-running drone/atmospheric sect, it will serve as the source for an ongoing series of reissued merch/clothing designs. Every two to three months the band will reprint/reissue two out-of-print designs in an edition fit for the demand. In addition, SUNN O))) has and will continue to release rare and limited audio items available through this site exclusively, as well as all current catalog releases.

One of the first additions to this new web presence for SUNN O))), is an ultra-deluxe reissue of the now classic album, Black One. Having just marked its eighth birthday since its initial release, Black One was issued in October of 2005, the sixth full-length from the band formed by Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley unveiling the darkest and most suffocating material from them to date, and arguably since. Featuring very special guests Oren Ambarchi, Wrest (Leviathan, Lurker of Chalice, Twilight) Malefic (Xasthur, Twilight) and John Weise (Bastard Noise), the tonal magma explosions created under the influence of the most utterly black atmospheres, here SUNN O))) endlessly seeks to push boundaries and demolish pre-conceived ideas of their eminence. Sinister vocal performances courtesy of Wrest and Malefic literally call from beyond the grave. Unorthodox and experimental recording methods were used to obtain the petrifying eerie tone of the voices on this album. For the epic side-4 piece, "Bathory Erzebet", SUNN O))) procured a casket then loaded it into a Cadillac Hearse, and locked Malefic inside with only a microphone and a severe sense of claustrophobia. The result is truly suffocating and disturbing; mammoth giants crushing valleys of the drowned. This album is as bleak, crushing, and devoid of light as only they possibly could have delivered.

This new pressing of Black One is issued in a 180-gram, 2xLP fashion, bound in a thick Stoughton style gatefold jacket in an exclusive Record Store Day edition of 1,000 copies on black vinyl, with an official street date of November 26th. As a special bonus fans can order the new pressing of the album on white or grey vinyl now, in runs of 1,000 each, a month and-a-half early. The white wax can be ordered now at the new SUNN O))) (virtually/online) presence AT THIS LOCATION and the grey vinyl HERE. A silver edition of 1,000 be available in Europe-only via Southern Lord Europe shortly.

Black One Track Listing:

Side A

Sin-Nanna 2:19

It Took The Night To Believe

Cursed Realms

Side B

Orthodox Caveman

Side C

Side D

Additionally, SUNN O))) has declared two brand new live incantations in the Benelux collective this December. The first performance will transpire on the 12th of December in Kortrijk, Belgium with support to be announced at a future date. The following night SUNN O))) will appear at State-X New Forms Festival in Den Hagg, Netherlands with The Orb, Amenra and others. The act's full live lineup for this duo of performances remains unannounced.

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL: BOXED SET
OUT NOVEMBER 11 WITH NEW ARTWORK
HIGHLIGHTING KUSTOM AMPLIFIERS

Six CDs with 121 tracks include entire Fantasy album catalog
as well as many live performances and full disc of pre-CCR rarities

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—Even the most in-depth exploration of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Fantasy Records catalog wouldn’t necessarily reveal that they hailed from the Bay Area. Their glorious brand of stripped-down roots rock seemed to emanate straight from the murky swamps of Louisiana and smoky juke joints dotting the outskirts of Memphis, with a fierce musical attack that was raw and primal. CCR was one of the most important and commercially popular bands of the late 1960s and early ’70s, defined by John Fogerty’s whipsaw vocals, slashing lead guitar, and prolific muse. Their seminal albums for Fantasy Records (six platinum, the other gold) are loaded with timeless hits.

Set for reissue on November 11, Creedence Clearwater Revival: Boxed Set contains everything the rockers cut in the studio for Fantasy from 1967 to 1972 — their seven studio albums (Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmo’s Factory, Pendulum, and Mardi Gras) packed with smashes (“Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Down on the Corner,” “Fortunate Son,” “Green River,” “Travelin’ Band,” “Up Around the Bend,” “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”). There’s nearly a disc-and-a-half of live material from concerts at the Oakland Coliseum and across the European continent as well, proving that CCR was as explosive onstage as within the confines of the studio.

Also on board are 25 1961-1967 rarities from the days when John, his brother Tom (on rhythm guitar and some lead vocals), bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford did business as Tommy Fogerty & the Blue Velvets and then the Golliwogs. These hard-rocking garage band gems, collectors’ items all, comprise the entire first disc of this box.

The big difference between this edition of the CCR box and its acclaimed 2001 predecessor is its sleeker, highly attractive packaging. The artwork highlights the band’s strong affinity for Kustom amplifiers in all their Naugahyde-covered glory, paying clever tribute to CCR’s gritty garage–rock roots in the process. Its “amplified” cover looks like a Kustom rig; prominently featured elsewhere is a photo of John and Doug sharing an onstage high-five with one of those distinctive amps in the background. It’s featured on the inner sleeve of each disc, divided into six sections. When laid out together in the correct order, those six individual sleeves create the full photograph. The joyous image is as powerful as the music itself.

Comprehensive liner notes by well-known rock journalists Ben Fong-Torres, Robert Christgau, Ed Ward, Joel Selvin, Craig Werner, Alec Palao and Dave Marsh expertly detail CCR’s career in the deluxe accompanying booklet, which contains a plethora of vintage photos of the iconic band. No box set will ever cover CCR’s history more comprehensively than this one — or do it more attractively.

Mark Lanegan
Has God Seen My Shadow? An Anthology 1989-2011
Light In The Attic

As one of America’s great modern day vocalists and songwriters, Mark Lanegan has much in common with the timeless work of such legends as Fred Neil, Tim Hardin and Karen Dalton. The former frontman of Screaming Trees, collaborator with Kurt Cobain and Queens Of The Stone Age, half of a modern day Nancy & Lee with Isobel Campbell and, most commonly, solo artist, Lanegan is a man whose career has been defined by an unwillingness to sit still.

Light In The Attic are set to shine a spotlight on this great American performer and songwriter with the release of Has God Seen My Shadow? An Anthology 1989-2011. Collecting Lanegan’s solo material for Sub Pop, Beggars and more plus 12 unreleased tracks, this is the archive treatment Mark has long deserved. It is released in two sumptuous formats: a Double-CD edition with a gatefold, tip-on jacket and a 44-page booklet comprising hand-written lyrics and rare archive photos by Charles Peterson and Steve Gullick, and a Triple-LP box set, each LP in single pocket jackets within a heavy, tip-on slip case, with a 20-page book featuring the same attention to detail and extras as the CD release.

The 32 tracks shine a light on Mark’s rare talent, and span the singer’s entire career, from 1990’s debut album The Winding Sheet to a treasure trove of recent unreleased gems and feature such guests as PJ Harvey, Josh Homme and J Mascis. His is a sound of grizzled vocals and dark melody, its lyrics chiseled out of late night thoughts and dark humor.

Originally released in 1969 on Canyon, this record is now considered by many to be the GREATEST DEEP SOUL ALBUM of all time. Our freshly REMASTERED CD DIGIPAK version features a BOOKLET with NEW LINER NOTES by producer Swamp Dogg (available on the Alive site for download), as well as RECENTLY UNEARTHED PHOTOS OF THE SESSION. The vinyl is a 180 GRAM pressing or RED vinyl (exclusive to Bomp-mailorder) and includes a POSTER insert. This amazing album also features Duane Allman on guitar.

A masterpiece of soul singing, song writing, and production. – FUNK MY SOUL

Though considered the finest deep soul record of all time by no less than soul expert Dave Godin, "I'm a Loser" was rejected by dozens of labels before it finally surfaced on Wally Roker's Canyon label. Although the first single, "To the Other Woman," cracked Billboard's R&B Top Ten, Canyon soon spiraled into financial disaster, destroying the album's commercial momentum. – ALL MUSIC

Doris had this great sad quality in delivering a song that could only be compared with Billie Holiday. You believe she has lived through every story on the album. – SWAMP DOGG

Z.Z. HILL - THE BRAND NEW Z.Z. HILL
Blues singer Z.Z. Hill first made records for Atlantic, Kent, and in 1971 scored his first big hit for United Artists, followed by others on Columbia. In the '80s he single-handedly started a blues revival in the USA with the smash-it "Down Home Blues." The Brand New Z.Z. Hill was originally marketed as a Blues Opera, an oddity back in the early seventies, and was written by Swamp Dogg and Gary U.S. Bonds. When released it hit both the Billboard Top 200 and the R&B charts and sold over a million singles via six releases. The album has been REMASTERED for this release and is presented here with its ORIGINAL ALBUM GATEFOLD COVER. The CD DIGIPAK comes with 8 bonus tracks and NEW LINER NOTES by producer Swamp Dogg.

Every time I speak of Z.Z. HILL or listen to his recordings I can't think of anyone I've ever met in the music industry that was more gentlemanly, kind, gracious, generous and talented as he was. – SWAMP DOGG

Down in Washington Square: The Smithsonian Folkways Collection
Dave Van Ronk SFW40213

Called “The Mayor of MacDougal Street,” Dave Van Ronk (1936-2002) was a leading figure in the Greenwich Village music scene for more than four decades. He epitomized the urban “folksinger”— apprenticing through immersion in the music revival’s New York City epicenter of Washington Square Park. Drawing from and developing a wide repertoire of songs, guitar techniques, and performing skills, he mentored younger musicians and songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Jack Hardy, Suzanne Vega, Christine Lavin, and many others. Down in Washington Square includes 16 never-before-released recordings coupled with tracks from the Smithsonian Folkways archive, spanning early live recordings made in 1958 (one year before his first Folkways album) to his final studio recordings in 2001, just months before his death. It paints a musical mosaic of Van Ronk’s artistry and expands his legacy, keeping alive the genius of a legendary performer who inspired audiences, musicians, and a major motion picture — Inside Llewyn Davis, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Three CD box set, 54 tracks, nearly three hours of music, 40-page booklet with extensive notes.

Rhino Handmade's latest: Chicago's LIVE IN '75, Iron Butterfly's FILLMORE EAST 1968, and Tony Joe White's THAT ON THE ROAD---plus the previous ones still in stock; would like to check Tim Buckley's much-expanded s/t. http://www.rhino.com/handmade?eml=rn/110113/hall3

dow, Saturday, 2 November 2013 00:34 (twelve years ago)

Are there more of those expanded Tim Buckley sets forthcoming?
There was an announcement a few years ago that there was a comprehensive reissue series happening. Ii said something along the lines of 'we know what's out there and are trying to include everything' sounded like it was going to mean every lp with relevant bonus material. THen the first thing to be released was the My Fleeting House dvd which was organised by somebody who edited out a great chunk of the 1970 Boboquivari live in the tv studio set and intentionally excluded other material that he could have included.
When the question was asked on a yahoo list as to why certain footage was missing from Boboquivari the compiler started trying to make out that it was absurd to think of a show that had been filmed as a continuous performance in 1970 had a context other than the one he was giving it and that the usual use of the word missing could not be used. This footage had also been in circulation in bootleg form for a number of years but in not great quality. From the previous announcement that reissues would be as comprehensive as possible this always seemed a bit strange. Also that somebody who had been working on the official dvd release of the artist's material would intentionally exclude footage that they had their hands on, particularly since there was only a limited amount of footage.
The anthologist came out with something about having a certain figure for time in his head which has always struck me as a strange direction of fit as to how to handle compiling material. If there is only so much material out there and you have the space to fit it why would you intentionally not do so?

Would love a full release of the Boboquivari set, preferably both in audio and dvd form and if possible in the same set. Shame that what I thought was supposed to be the official dvd release of the Tim Buckley video archive cut out such a chunk of it.

So I'm hoping that the rest of the Tim Buckley lps are coming out in 2cd form like that first one. I think that was 2 discs that were pretty full wasn't it or at least close to the hour mark on each one.

Also can anybody confirm the existence or non-existence of filmed footage from Knebworth in 1974. There were adverts for the film in the back of the US collector mags Goldmine and Discoveries for years in the early 90s and possibly before and after. I still haven't come across any footage of that set, love the audio boot of it Return of THe Starsailor so would love to get visuals with it. Would like to know what was being sold as Knebworth footage if it isn't the actual thing.

Stevolende, Saturday, 2 November 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

Is boboquivari the one with live performances of Starsailor material?

Linda Darmstadt (Jon Lewis), Saturday, 2 November 2013 23:51 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, tis indeed. Every time a song comes to an end the horns pretty much immediately come in with the intro to the next track hence continuous. & it seems to be the only long filmed performance of Tim.
Would have thought most people compiling something like that would have included all 26 minutes of the thing, and it is a lovely performance.

THE OBSESSED: The Church Within CD and LP

Biker metal, doom metal, stoner metal…whatever metal subgenre you want to fit him into, Scott “Wino” Weinrich has been at the forefront of it for over thirty years. The unmistakable rasp of his lead vocals and thick, fuzzy Gibson guitar tone have spearheaded bands ranging from Saint Vitus to Spirit Caravan to Probot, but for many his crowning achievement (and most accessible one) was The Church Within, the last album he made with his first band, The Obsessed, for Columbia in 1994. His lone major label release, The Church Within features the dark vision and crushing, slow-motion riffs beloved by fans of Black Sabbath, but the driving intensity and atonal guitar solos recall Motorhead and Black Flag, respectively; in short, this album transcends genre classifications even as it defines them. Now, for the first time, this lost classic of ‘90s metal is being reissued by Real Gone Music on CD with two bonus tracks (the single “Mental Kingdom” and the unreleased track “Melancholy Grey”), added photos, the original album art with lyrics and a new note from Wino himself. Everyone from Henry Rollins to Dave Grohl to Ian MacKaye has sung Wino’s praises…time to join the chorus.

YES: THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1969-1987

The Progressive Rockers' Legendary Atlantic Years Revisited With 13-CD Boxed Set Featuring Remastered and Expanded Versions Of The Band's Studio Albums

Includes The U.S. Debut Of Remastered And Expanded Version Of Big Generator

The Collection Will Be Available On December 24 From Rhino

LOS ANGELES - The most successful and influential progressive rock band in the world, Yes will celebrate its prolific tenure at Atlantic Records with a new boxed set that contains all 12 of the studio albums they recorded with the label. Each one features the remastered sound and bonus tracks that originally appeared in 2003 and 2004, when Rhino's reissued the band's catalog.

The collection spans nearly 20 years of music over the course of 13 CDs and includes the albums that earned Yes an international following and helped the English group sell more than 30 million (and counting) albums. Roger Dean, who illustrated many of Yes' iconic album covers through the years, created the new artwork for the clamshell box that houses the music, making this set instantly recognizable to any Yes fan. A fold-out poster of Dean's new art is also included. The set marks the American debut of the expanded and remastered version of Big Generator, which was previously available only in Japan.

THE STUDIO ALBUMS 1969-1987 will be released on December 24 for a suggested list price of $74.98. A digital version will also be available.

Bassist Chris Squire, singer Jon Anderson and drummer Bill Bruford started Yes in 1968. The following year, the group released its self-titled debut, mixing original material with totally reworked versions of song by groups like The Byrds and the Beatles.

The band's sound evolved quickly as its songs became more ambitious, adopting a more symphonic approach to the music and exploring more enigmatic themes with its lyrics. Yes' dynamic sound resonated with fans around the world during the 1970s, when the group enjoyed both critical and commercial success with a string of now-classic albums: The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971), Close to the Edge (1972), the double album Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973), Relayer (1974) and Going for the One (1977).

During that time the band featured Squire, Anderson, Bruford, guitar virtuoso Steve Howe and drummer Alan White. Several different keyboardists also played on those albums, including Tony Kaye, Rick Wakeman and Patrick Moraz.

In the decade that followed, Yes's success continued to grow as its sound and line-up continued to change over the course of three albums. Singer Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes of the Buggles replaced Anderson and Wakeman for one album, Drama (1980), which boasted a heavier sound.

Anderson and longtime keyboardist Tony Kaye both returned in 1983, appearing on the immensely successful album 90125, which also featured the debut of guitarist Trevor Rabin. The record produced the band's #1 song, "Owner of a Lonely Heart," plus several other radio hits, "It Can Happen," "Changes" and "Leave It." An instrumental track from the album, "Cinema" would go on to win the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1985.

Big Generator, the band's final album with Atlantic Records, was released in 1987. Until now, the remastered and expanded version was only available in Japan. The album produced two radio hits, "Love Will Find a Way" and "Rhythm of Love." Several versions of those songs are among the album's five bonus tracks, including edited and extended versions of "Love Will Find a Way," and three different mixes of "Rhythm of Love."

Still no reissue of Yessongs...

Joe McPhee
Nation Time: The Complete Recordings (1969-70)

Each box contains:

* Nation Time, the original LP, complete as issued & re-mastered
* Black Magic Man, the original LP, complete with two alternate takes of “Song for Lauren”
* The Vassar Sessions, 1970, six unreleased tracks from the Nation Time recording sessions
* Nation Time Preview, 1969, two concert recordings in the run-up to Nation Time
* 60-page liner booklet, full-color, stocked with never-published vintage photos
* Definitive Nation Time interview with Joe McPhee by John Corbett
* Hardshell case, separate cardboard sleeves for all 4 discs
* Luxurious design by Sonnenzimmer

In 1970, multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee waxed one of the landmark free-funk records: Nation Time. Recorded in concert at Vassar College and originally released on McPhee's own CjR label, Nation Time culled elements of post-Coltrane spiritual jazz, greasy organ funk, and expressive R&B into a previously unknown brand of Poughkeepsie stew. When the LP was finally reissued on CD a dozen years ago, it became an instant hit, drawing fans from the British soul scene and denizens of free jazz alike, introducing a new generation to Mr. McPhee's powerful statement, still brimming with sweat and humanity thirty years after its birth.

After working on it for five years, Corbett vs. Dempsey is proud to release Nation Time: The Complete Recordings, a deluxe 4-disc box set featuring all the music leading up to and around the seminal LP. With 17 tracks previously unreleased on CD, most of which have never been issued at all, the set provides an expansive picture of the vibrant up-state NY free jazz/new thing scene, centered as it was on Joe McPhee. Lavishly packaged, with a booklet containing an extensive conversation between John Corbett and Joe McPhee and many previously unpublished photographs, Nation Time: The Complete Recordings also helps contextualize the original LP, exploring the special milieu in which tracks like “Shaky Jake” and “Scorpio's Dance” took shape.
Along with the LP, complete and re-mastered, Nation Time: The Complete Recordings presents additional tracks recorded during the original 2-day performances in December 1970, including a version of James Brown's “Cold Sweat,” as well as the full LP Black Magic Man, which was released on vinyl as the very first issue of the fledgling Hat Hut record label in 1975, but has never been reissued on CD. Two fascinating concert recordings from 1969 are released here for the first time, one featuring McPhee on trumpet playing jazz standards including “My Funny Valentine,” “Milestones,” and “Bag's Groove,” and the other, recorded at a local bar called the Paddock, including the first incarnation of what would become the track “Nation Time.”
This box set cuts direct to the heart of 1970s jazz-funk expression, with all the passion, intrigue, and tenderness the world has come to expect from Joe McPhee. Here it is in all its germinal, previously unheard glory. What time is it? You know what time it is. Once again, it's Nation Time!

THIS IS LONE JUSTICE: THE VAUGHT TAPES, 1983
PROVIDES EARLY GLIMPSE
OF PIONEERING ALT-COUNTRY ROCKERS

Twelve tracks, including nine unissued performances,
set for release on CD, red vinyl and digital.
Liner notes include testimonial from Dolly Parton, a fan of the band.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — It can be difficult to capture the live power of band in a studio recording. Luckily for us, Lone Justice (Maria McKee, Ryan Hedgecock, Marvin Etzioni, and Don Heffington), forerunners of the alt-country movement, went to Suite 16 Studios in December of 1983 and laid down much of the set list with which they were packing Los Angeles area clubs.

Recorded direct to two-track tape by engineer David Vaught and with no overdubs, those 12 tracks can finally be heard in their entirety as This Is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983, out January 14, 2014 on Omnivore Recordings. As Los Angeles music journalist Chris Morris writes in his liner notes, the release “offers the best representation of the band in its infancy — hot, full of piss and vinegar, and ready to take on the world.”

Nine of the tracks are previously unissued, and include originals (such as “Soap, Soup and Salvation,” which would appear on their Geffen debut two years later) as well as the covers they made their own in concert (Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s “Jackson” and “Nothing Can Stop My Loving You,” written by George Jones and Roger Miller).

Available on CD, LP (the first pressing is on translucent red vinyl) and digitally, the package includes, in addition to Morris’ liners an essay from the band’s Ryan Hedgecock, as well as a remembrance of David Vaught from Marvin Etzioni — even a loving endorsement from Dolly Parton, who writes, “I have loved Lone Justice and Maria McKee since they first started out as a group. I remember going to see them at the Music Machine in Los Angeles in 1983; I was so impressed. I especially love this album. It has some of my favorite old songs on it and some new favorites that I've never heard. Hope you enjoy Lone Justice, everybody! I know I will.”

With unseen photos and memorabilia (including images from the band’s personal archive), this collection is what Lone Justice fans have been waiting for. This Is Lone Justice: The Vaught Tapes, 1983 takes us back to a time when music had an energy that was hard to contain.

Thanks to that studio in Van Nuys, Calif., and this release, Justice has been served!

I may check this one out. I saw them open for U2 in 1985, and despite the fact that they raged (mostly stuff from their debut, plus a driving cover of "Fortunate Son"), the audience booed them off after 20 minutes.

Yeah, Lone Justice had a near-chart-hit a couple years later with "Shelter" (they were on SNL), but it was annoying how merciless the U2 crowd was, particularly as they started booing before Lone Justice made a sound. Sadly, the opening onslaught of "East of Eden" did nothing to ameliorate the boos.

More a lost album than a reissue, but this is fantastic in an 80s disco-Crepusculewave style:

http://capturedtracks.com/news/coming-soon-saada-bonaire-2xlp-cd/

Formed by Bremen DJ Ralf Behrendt in 1982, Saâda Bonaire was a unique concept band centered around two sultry female vocalists (Stefanie Lange and Claudia Hossfeld) who would be joined by dozens of local musicians culled from the local immigration center.

Originally signed to EMI in 1982, their first and only single, “You Could Be More As You Are” was produced in Kraftwerk’s studio by legendary Matumbi, Slits and Pop Group producer Dennis Bovell. There they were joined by jazz icon Charlie Mariano (previous collaborations include Gong, Stan Kenton and Charles Mingus) who lent his talents on saxophone. The resulting sound was a unique fusion of husky female vocals, Eastern instruments, dub and African music aesthetics, drum computers and synthesizers.

1984. Just as the “would-be” hit single was due for release, a scandal struck at the EMI office. Saâda Bonaire’s A&R man, notoriously famous for exceeding his budget, was in a constant tug of war with the EMI finance department. He had previously exceeded his budget 5 times over on Tina Turner’s “Private Dancer” and was more than 3 times over budget for Saâda Bonaire; this was the last straw. Fed up, EMI released “You Could Be More As You Are”, but pulled the plug on all further promotional support for Saâda Bonaire. The group disappeared from public eye soon after.

For this release Saâda Bonaire have compiled the two songs from the original EMI single plus eleven previously unreleased songs that were recorded between 1982 and 1985. And though these tracks were recorded nearly 30 years ago, they feel wholly modern.

Last and definitely not least in the cold November release schedule is the return to vinyl of Gastr del Sol’s game-changing “Mirror Repair” EP, released nineteen years ago this month. Gastr had already done two LPs, and the second one we’d released (Crookt Crackt or Fly was the first - remember?), and we’d been following David Grubbs from band to band since back in Squirrel Bait, but as alluded above, “Mirror Repair” presented something different, something that made Gastr more compelling going forward and something, we dare say that influenced new music being made for the next era. It’s likely that Jim O’Rourke’s place in the band was becoming less defined, which led to a greater expansiveness in the arrangements. The walls kept blowing out for Gastr over the course of the next couple of years, making their albums Upgrade & Afterlife and Camoufleur can’t-miss classics to this day. Meanwhile, “Mirror Repair” quietly went out of print by ’98 – because, as the logic went, EPs were going out of style (EPs are back! – cassette-crazy ed.). But that’s just not fair; the best EPs are as powerful as any full album, and in the case of “Mirror Repair,” we felt that we were in tune with another new step in music, something that Royal Trux seemed unable (or more likely unwilling) to attempt; something that wasn’t in the realm of the Palace Brothers; something not offered by Silver Jews or Smog. It was a great moment of possibility during the season that we sold “Mirror Repair” to stores, and that was an encounter that’s informed everything we’ve done since. So fuck YOUR needs – buy “Mirror Repair” because of what it meant to us. Plus, it has that great Albert Oehlen painting on the cover! And “Eight Corners,” whotta classic.
(the following Aquariana album is not very good, except for a mention of God making love to Man, and Man making love to Woman--but they've already reissued several others from the Source Family tree)
But then again, the records for December 17th are gonna make for a great crop of last-minute releases before 2013 strikes a well-deserved midnight. Check it out –

We start with Aquariana, another issuance from the vaults of The Source Family, who became known to a lot more people this year due to the release of The Source Family documentary film. However, even if the film hadn’t come out, it was fully the intention of Source Family archivist Isis Aquarian to release Aquariana’s music in 2013, to get some of the strong SF female energy into the world after the male-oriented archival issues of recent years (The Thought Adjusters, Magnificence In the Memory). Well, December 17th – we’re making it right under the wire, but numbers are numbers, and the Aquariana LP and digital download release will equal 2013 for eternity. The songs Aquariana recorded at the Father House in 1973 were intended to be released the following year, but the decisions and actions of Father Yod led the Family into several transitional years culminating in his passing over while they were living in Hawaii in 1975. And in the transitions that followed, the music of his lovely bride and mother of his son was…not lost, but not released over. Now in December, her devotional purity will be available for all to share, in an album-length set of songs recorded mostly solo, sung at the piano. Like Father before her, Aquariana has since passed, so the photos of her and Yod (father and son) that Isis has maintained in the archive recall a time of other lives – and suggest other lives for the rest of our earthbound survivors.

Also on the reissue tip in December is The Howling Hex’s 2005 All-Night Fox album. This was originally released on CD only, and we’re chuffed as fuck to be putting it on LP at long last. Neil Hagerty’s visions for The Howling Hex are as difficult as any transmissions from the future would be for contemporary ears, but now that we’re eight years removed, All-Night Fox has achieved its status as an all-time record. Following three albums of populist rock and roll under the name Neil Michael Hagerty, The Howling Hex was launched with a trio of limited-edition LPs that obliquely spanned the underbelly of music, culture and Proustian recall. These records have been collected in reedited and abridged form on the 1-2-3 CD. With all dust blown from the tubes, All-Night Fox inaugurated a new era for The Howling Hex: the "New Border Sound" approach was undertaken, trading takes on contemporary Mexican rhythms such as Nortena for the old, abused R ‘n B tropes. In addition to this rhythmic shift, the hard-panned production featured several singers, draped in sharply-contrasting layers of reverb. The effect was cartoonish and fun, reminiscent of the trial put upon listening ears back in Royal Trux’s Accelerator days. But there the comparison ended and has never been made since, as The Howling Hex have forged their own path, to the delight and disgust of discerning and “discerning” listeners, respectively. Now, let the needle sort it out for you! All-Night Fox is finally on LP.

Numero's latest release, Purple Snow, is a chronicle of the Minneapolis Sound from the mid '70s to early '80s. Dark Matter was asked to create a limited blend and mixtape for this special occasion. Like the majestic waters of Lake Minnetonka, this jive coffee has a taste & style all its own.
A carefully crafted blend of music compliments the release; something your player and ears will both appreciate. We even went the extra mile and had these tapes professionally made in a stunning shade of purple, available for free with the first 150 bags. If you can't get one of the tapes OR you don't have a cassette player, skip over to Mixcloud to stream the mix.

JAZZMAN RECORDS (UK) / JMAN 061CD
release date: 12/10/2013

DESCRIPTION
Soul and funk from the early '70s from this multi-racial band out of the Bronx. These guys played for fun, understanding and mutual respect -- no pressure from the record company to make a hit record = positive vibes and freedom. And it shows. One of the eternal issues of record collecting is the question of how good records actually become rare. Perhaps the record company goes bust. Perhaps the label is busy pushing some lame pop act on the roster, leaving the good stuff to rot. Maybe the band splits up just before the release. Less frequent than any of these is this: perhaps the record wasn't supposed to sell in the first place. As strange as it seems, that was exactly the case with this album, by Sounds of the City Experience. In Jazzman's Holy Grail reissue of the highly-sought after Sounds of the City Experience LP on notorious tax-scam label Tiger Lily, Jazzman interviews the producer Mario Sprouse and finds out exactly why this album is so rare. They discover and disclose the story behind the band and why they made these high-quality recordings which were never intended for release. The CD includes three previously-unreleased bonus tracks and comes with a 16-page full-color booklet containing detailed liner notes and previously-unseen pictures of the band in action. All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes.

Ordered The Complete Muse Sessions, a Mosaic box by trumpeter Woody Shaw. I'm just getting into Shaw this year—I got his Complete Columbia Albums box a month or so back.

Yeah, he's good; seems often overlooked these days, maybe in his lifetime as well ( seemed overshadowed by Miles, like many others). The only Mosaic box I've ever gotten is Herbie Nichols---so amazing! Lives up to everything I imagined while reading Four Lives in the BeBop Business, to say the least, and vivid, splendid sound, text, photography. Financial consids and wildly varied musical interests kicked in soon after. (I'd post the cover, but resale/auction sites would prob have removed).

Patrick Cowley School Daze Available on CD December 24th
Double LP Out Now Via Dark Entries/Honey Soundsystem
Earlier this year, San Francisco-based label Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem released a seminal collection of Patrick Cowley tracks as the double LP titled School Daze. Just named Juno's #1 re-issue of 2013, the collection, comprised of tracks that were originally meant for usage in the films of gay porn company Fox Studio, highlights the most innovative and forward thinking sounds of the disco legend.

Clocking in at just over 80 minutes, the compilation was too large to fit on CD format. However, Dark Entries will now be releasing a CD version that features all of the tracks minus the shortest track, "Pagan Rhythms". The School Daze CD will be available December 24th - pre-order now.

Praise for School Daze

"Cowley created foggy indigenous music akin to the sprawling psychedelia of the Bay Area's famous Haight-Ashbury bands — the keening synths of the title track even approximate screaming guitar heroics. Yet the bulk is far more delicate and sensual, like the warm, well-lubricated touch of a skilled masseur."
NPR

"... it's a very blissed-out and and queasily physical mix (summed up by two adjacent titles: "Journey Home" ... "Out Of Body"): a perfect tonal match-up, presumably, for the onscreen clone-era porn"
The Wire

"Clammy coldwave fugues, shuddering proto-techno, and quixotic funk studies that sound like Raymond Scott high on mushrooms and Moebius"
SPIN

"squelchy, prog-indebted synth music,"
FACT

"...pure, cosmic magic. Deep, sensual, and bubbling with a languid dreaminess, this is Cowley's disco music stripped to its core: warm, skeletal beats, percolating synths, and a keen sense of melody that must have worked perfectly in their original erotic context."
Other Music

"this collection sounds remarkably relevant in the current electronic-music landscape. Perhaps it is a sign of how responsible Cowley is for the building blocks of various genres that one can almost hear the echoes of Emeralds' Does It Look Like I'm Here or even Actress' R.I.P. in certain sections of the album."
XLR8R

"These 80 minutes show the other side, the insular and the lesser seen side of the San Fran synth man. At times dark, others uplifting, this is a fascinating discover from an artist who was talented beyond his years and stolen from the music world while in his creative prime."
Igloo Mag

Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the cannon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music coined "The San Francisco Sound." Born in Buffalo, NY on October 19, 1950, Patrick moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. He studied at the City College of San Francisco where he founded the Electronic Music Lab. During this time Patrick createe radio jingles and electronic pieces using the school's equipment, first a Putney, then an E-MU System and finally a Serge synthesizer. He made experimental instrumental songs by blending various types of music and adapting them to the synthesizer.

By the mid-70's, Patrick's synthesizer skills landed him a job composing and producing songs for disco superstar Sylvester such as “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”, “Dance Disco Heat” and "Stars." This helped Patrick obtain more work as a remixer and producer. Of particular note was his 18-minute long remix of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and production work with edgy New Wave band Indoor Life. By 1981 Patrick released a string of dance 12" singles, like “Menergy” and “Megatron Man”, creating the soundtrack for a generation. Also that year, he founded Megatone Records and released his debut album. Around this time Patrick was hospitalized and diagnosed with a then-unknown illness: that would later be called AIDS. Prior to his passing on November 12, 1982, he recorded two more Hi-NRG hits, “Do You Wanna Funk” for Sylvester and "Right On Target" for Paul Parker.

In 1981 Patrick was contacted by John Coletti, the owner of famed gay porn company Fox Studio in Los Angeles. John had heard about Patrick's music from the legendary Sylvester and proposed he write music for his films. Patrick jumped on this offer and sent reels of his college compositions from the 70s to John in LA. Coletti then used a variable speed oscillator to adjust the pitch and speed of Patrick's songs in-sync with the film scene. "School Daze" is a collection of Cowley's instrumental songs recorded between 1973 and 1981 found in the Fox Studio vaults. Influenced by Tomita, Wendy Carlos and Giorgio Moroder, Patrick forged an electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, modified guitars and self-constructed equipment. The listener enters a world of dark forbidden vices, introspective and reflective of Patrick's time spent in the bathhouses of San Francisco. The songs on "School Daze" range from sparse proto- techno to high octane funk to somber post-punk to musique concrete, revealing the depth of Cowley's unique talent.

Featuring over 80 minutes of music, this compilation contains soundtrack music from two Fox Studio films, "Muscle Up" and "School Daze", never before released on vinyl. The tapes were restored and transferred using the same speed and pitch settings, then remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy dual pocket gatefold featuring classic gay porn imagery from the Fox Studio vaults plus an essay from Indoor Life vocalist, Jorge Soccarras. For Patrick's 63rd birthday, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem present a glimpse into the instrumental world of a young genius. These recordings shine a new light on the experimental side of a disco legend who was taken too soon.

DAIS RECORDS ANNOUNCES
RETROSPECTIVE FOR 80′S GOTHIC FOLK COLLECTIVE
ANNABELLE'S GARDEN

Dais Records is very, very pleased to announce (after 4 years in the works) that pre-orders are up for the double LP retrospective of late 80′s gothic folk collective, Annabelle’s Garden. Annabelle’s Garden were a radically underground goth-wave/neo-folk band founded in Hamburg, Germany by members of local acts “La Lisa” and “Beyond Despair”, most active between 1987 and 1997. They released cassettes themselves and across indie European labels, music which was eventually compiled and presented to the world in the early and mid-90s on two CD releases by none other than Patrick Leagas (of Death in June & 6Comm/Mother Destruction) on his own lauded Kenaz imprint.

Though they played rarely, it was often an event – outdoors, in fields to friends – and their live performances usually made us of all 24 tracks across the soundboard, dozens of instruments (traditional and homemade: rusty cages, rain barrels, etc).

Often compared to contemporaries like Death in June, Sol Invictus, or Current 93 (they toured extensively with 6Comm), they managed to create music that existed both in that realm and beyond, labeled as psychedelic, punk, new wave, and goth. You can clearly hear respect given to This Mortal Coil, The Cure, or The Wake – making them as easily filed among classic World Serpent releases as they would fit among 4AD or Factory.

The truth is, so little was known about Annabelle’s Garden outside of Europe that not only were their original releases on Kenaz extremely hard to find – you were lucky to even have heard about them to know to search. However – what exists here, in Annabelle’s Garden, is some of the most layered, deep, rich, and nostalgic music Dais has ever uncovered.

This gorgeous limited gatefold double LP is comprised of not only the original Kenaz release from 1993: “Wo Sind Nur Eure Götter Hin?”, but also includes tracks from the band’s original first recording and maiden cassette release, as well as a special never before heard remix of their classic anthem “If”.

Lovingly included is a full color 12-page booklet with liner notes, detailed track information, and a complete history of the band written by the band themselves, emerging for the first time in almost twenty years to collaborate with Dais. This is the first of a limited series of Annabelle’s Garden in chronological order, bringing forth some of the most rare and gorgeous underground music ever.

Limited edition of 500, gorgeous gatefold double LP designed by Eddie O’Dowd (Psychic TV/PTV3, Angry Love) with 12 page booklet and liner notes by Dais and Annabelle’s Garden.

Merry happy whatever. It’s December 18th, cold, and we’re buried in cardboard. Mailorder has been so fierce that the entire staff has had to shirk their normal duties and pitch in on what amounts to a box brigade. Why so much volume? Just a new website for the first time in seven years. No big deal. After a handful of bugs were discovered and squished, we’re now running at full speed, and ready to fulfill some of your holiday dreams. Deals? We’ve got ‘em. New and improved subscription? Done, done, and done.

001. A brand new Interweb
002. Deals of a lifetime (or at least a day)
003. Tip your mail carrier

001. We’ve got a new website and we’re telling everyone.

Saturn returns! Seven years ago we were working out of a fourth floor walk up in Ken Shipley’s Bucktown apartment, now we’re working in a two flat that used to be Ken Shipley’s house. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Like our crappy old website. You know the one, impossible to navigate, loved to randomly drop orders from the system. Websites age in squirrel years, and our critter had more than just gray in his beard. One legged, no tail, missing an ear. It was so bad that when it came time to migrate tens of thousands of customers, we couldn’t actually do it. Like giving a kidney transplant to a 90 year old, it just didn’t take.

If you haven't already, please sign up for a new account. And because we recognize the massive pain in the ass that is signing up for an account, we’re going to give you free MP3 downloads of every purchase you’ve ever made on the old Numero site. That’s right, the digital downloads you’ve been bugging us about for years all yours. Just click here and re-sign up. Since thousands of you are going to be doing this at once, be patient while we fix the inevitable breaks in the water main.

Oh, and because we like you, anytime you buy a record on the Numero website, we’ll give you an instant download of the album at no charge. You’re welcome.

002. Stocking stuffers or just more junk on your record shelves? You decide.

The Twelve Days of Numero has come to a close, but we’re offering it up to you, our loyal customers for 24 more hours before they disappear forever (or until this time next year). Many of you went whole hog already (our mail carrier Mark loves to fill his entire van full of mail at 630PM in the middle of a snow storm), but for those who haven’t, there’s gold up in them thar website!

Day 1: A Very Boddie Christmas—$80

Boddie Recording Company 5xLP (NUM035) From 1958 to 1993, Thomas and Louise Boddie’s industrious Boddie Recording Company issued nearly 300 albums and 45s, recorded 10,000 hours of tape, and remained in operation longer than any other studio, pressing plant, or label group in the history of Cleveland. The 65 tracks on these five LPs represent the best of the Boddies’ in-house Soul Kitchen, Luau, and Bounty labels, which released an unspoiled treasure trove of kitchen-sink eccentric soul, fuzzbox funk, shoestring doo-wop, and haunted, eerily hook-laden spirituals.

Boddie Acetate Box 3x45 (ESBOX-001) Culled from the Boddie Recording Company’s massive tape archive, this triple-45 box set captures the essence of Thomas Boddie’s custom recording outfit. Recorded in the late ’60s and early ’70s, the performers from all three discs are completely unknown, save for the fact that they cut two killer cuts before disappearing. Housed in a stark, white box and wrapped in Boddie-branded kraft tape for maximum minimalist effect.

Los Nombres – S/T LP (AST09) One part War, two parts Santana, and a dash of Motown, immersed in a rich Puerto Rican stock, Los Nombres were the undisputed kings of Northern Ohio’s Rust Belt barrios. Reaching back to Los Nombres’ most glorious and fearless era, these moments of off-the-cuff clarity feature an uncompromising assemblage of searing brass, molten organ, and crystalline nuggets of chili-powdered songwriting that could only have come from Ohio’s “International City.”

Day 2: Auld Lou Syne—$55

Lou Ragland - I Travel Alone 4xLP (NUM042) O’Jays road manager, Don King prison chauffeur, window washer, house painter, Ink Spot, Domino, engineer, label owner, guitorgan technician, and one-time steward of a coveted Jet Magazine delivery route, Lou Ragland is Cleveland’s Eastside success story. Suffocated by Lake Erie’s nitrate-rich waters and the burning oil from a Cuyahoga River fire, between 1967 and 1977 Lou Ragland produced the most thoughtful, hopeful, and downright soulful work to emerge from the Forest City. Packaged in an attractive slipcase, the quadruple LP features handsome gatefolds, and a booklet of never-before-seen photos of the Bandmaster at various stages of his career.

Love Apple – S/T LP (NUM042.5) In the late ’70s, three do-right women from Cleveland forged a brief partnership with Ohio’s everything man, Lou Ragland. Unlike the prefabricated singing combos of the day, Lily Pearson, Annette Warren, and Avetta Henry swapped lead duties as situation demanded. When a Ragland-centric publicity stunt preempted a concert appearance, Love Apple disintegrated, abandoning this rehearsal tape within the lo-fi confines of Thomas Boddie’s cherished Eastside studio. Devoid of bass, the sparse instrumentation (only Lou on guitar and piano and Hot Chocolate’s Tony Roberson on drums) accentuates each vocalist’s aptitude, showcasing some of Ragland’s finest songwriting in the process. Never intended for release, Love Apple’s six-song sketch is the perfect companion to I Travel Alone, bringing Ragland’s unique musical vision into sharper focus.

Day 3: It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Codeine—$90

Only EIGHT copies available!

Codeine – When I See The Sun 6LP + 3CD (NUM201) From 1990 to 1994, New York City’s Codeine were making somnambulant waves on a musical landscape reeling from Sub Pop’s better known exports. The label’s first and most significant foray out of what had become the signature Sub Pop sound, Codeine were an anomaly among their loud “lo-fi” and super-compressed alt-rock peers, preferring an understated, elegant, and above all beautiful approach that recalled the slowness of opiate drug states. Codeine’s glacial tempos were never an end in themselves. Rather, the lethargic pace reflected a deliberate and meticulous approach to songcraft—an emphasis on restraint and space which amounted to a punk provocation and an entirely different path toward catharsis than the prevailing scream therapies of the day. 1991’s Frigid Stars LP, 1992’s Barely Real, and 1994’s The White Birch received much critical praise upon release, but Codeine dissolved before any of the hype carried over into the so-called “slow core” movement. All three albums have been subjected to our notoriously elaborate packaging and include in-depth liner notes and scads of unpublished photos. Faithfully restored from the original masters, each album is accompanied by a plethora of singles, demos, live recordings, and Peel Sessions—packaged as a double LP along with a CD of the same material. Additionally, an ultra deluxe box set of all three albums is available. The box set includes a 5’ x 1’ fold-out poster of the band’s complete discography and a tidy slipcase to house all three albums National Geographic-style.

Codeine – Pickup Song (Live) b/w New Year’s (Live) 45 Recorded live by Bob Weston in July 1991 at TT The Bear’s Place in Boston, Massachusetts.

Codeine – What About the Lonely LP (NUM201.5) Following on the somnambulant heels of When I See The Sun comes What About The Lonely?, an eight-track LP recorded at the group’s live zenith. Captured direct from the mixing board at a stop on Codeine’s November 1993 swing through the Midwest, opening for Mazzy Star, this document finds Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Doug Scharin running through their hits at Chicago’s notorious Lounge Ax for a crowd of chatty 120 Minutes fans. Gastr Del Sol’s David Grubbs adds his guitar to two songs, slinking on and off the 24-inch stage with little fanfare, but leaving his signature indelibly on the performance. LP package includes Immerwahr's tour recollections and a shot at translucent red vinyl.

Day 4: Tap the hall with boughs of holly—$30

Don’t Stop Recording Tap 3xLP (NUM019) In January of 2006, the Numero Group found itself sitting three-wide on a weight bench in a clammy Jacksonville, Florida, garage. Eight hours later, we peeled out of the driveway 37 tapes deep into a new mystery. Although Jeremiah Yisrael's Tap label issued only a handful of 12"s between 1981 and '83, his tape deck never stopped rolling, capturing dozens of lavish songs during disco's waning days. From the string-heavy sugar boogie of Jackie Stoudemire and Arnie Love to pioneering raps by Missy Dee & the Melody Crew and the Fabulous 3 MCs, Recording Tap covers a wide swath of New York's all-night sound. Our 3LP set includes a miniature song book and expansive booklet stuffed with photos and memorabilia, housed in a miniature replica tape box, with and additional LP's worth of material not featured on the CD (Plus we included the CD in there as well).

Jackie Stoudemire Invisible Wind 12” (+006) Originally issued on Jeremiah Yisrael's Tap label in 1982, "Invisible Wind" finds 16-year-old Jackie Stoudemire in top form. Written by fellow label alum Arnie Love and produced by the legendary Gene Redd, the five-minute jam is a banging slice of epic club boogie that unfortunately never found an audience beneath the mirror ball. The second in our series of 12"s from the Tap/Universal archive, "Invisible Wind" cruises through with hand-drumming, cinematic bursts of trumpet, and an alternately soaring and urgent disco-string-section. Even Giorgio Moroder couldn't write a bass line so hot. Not quite a reissue, but rather a re-imagining, this extended play 12" contains the original, the original dub, the extended dub, and an edit by our friends Shoes.

Missy Dee & the Melody Crew Missy Missy Dee B/W Instrumental 12” (+007) The seventh in our ongoing 12” series delves even further into archives of New York’s Tap label. Missy Dee & the Melody Crew cut this tremendous slice of disco rap in 1981, only hours after fellow Tap-mates the Fabulous 3 MCs went upside down and back again on “Rub A Dub Dub.” Check the whistle on the instrumental flip for further proof. The original 12” is rare not only for its quantity pressed, but for the quality of the four teenage girl rappers—basically unparalleled at the time. While Missy Dee rocked many a block party, Lady T was the real standout, having come up as a member of Kurtis Blow’s crew. Her later work as MC Tatiana can be heard on the classic Clockin ZZZZs 12” “Mission To Rock.” Mastered from the original tapes, including all 8+ minutes of the vocal take, this reissue should take the Melody Crew from rap jesters to hip hop princesses. Very few copies remain!

Day 5: Titan night, holy night—$50

Titan – It’s All Pop! 4xLP (NUM024) From 1978 to 1981, the Titan label issued just eight records, but over the years their tiny catalog has crawled to the top of power-pop want lists worldwide and appeared on scads of homemade tapes, building a legacy to rival L.A.’s Bomp! or New York’s Ork. Cut off in fly-over country, Titan fostered a scene of its own, imported its own skinny ties, and scoured the Missouri valley for its own talent. The label’s Midwest AM bubblegum roots are apparent in the likes of Gary Charlson, the Secrets*, Arlis!, Gems, Millionaire At Midnight, the Boys, J.P. McClain & the Intruders, Bobby Sky, and Scott McCarl, but Titan’s acts took cues from Stiff too, along with the glam-punk spit being hocked off the 100 Club stage.

Thirty years since it meekly flopped out its first 7” single, Kansas City’s Titan Records finally finds a home in record bins everywhere with this 51-song quadruple LP box. All four LPs and the perfect-bound 12” x 12” book slide into a sturdy slipcase, putting a bolded exclamation point at the end of Titan’s first-class run.

The Boys – Circuit Overload (The Living Years) 10” (NUM024.5) We've recreated The Boys' scrapped live 10", originally slated for release by Kansas City's own Titan in 1980. Pressed into translucent red wax from the original 1/4" tape, the set includes stage renditions of "Out Of Touch," "Night Time," "You're Bad Too," and "Yesterday's Circles." Housed in a tip-on jacket and given the prestigious 024.5 catalog number, this limited-to-1000-copies 10" paints The Boys as true "if only" stars and top-calibre neo-glam forerunners.

Day 6: Ric & Ron’n’ Around the Christmas Tree—$35

From The Vaults Of Ric & Ron Records – Rare & Unreleased Recordings 1958 to 1962. 2012 US Record Store Day exclusive limited edition 10 x 7" vinyl box. Includes previously unissued tracks that include Lena Come What May (Demo) by Al Johnson, Found My Good Thing and Question Of Love by Barbara Lynn, I Won't Cry (Audition) and Walking The Floor Over You by Johnny Adams, Blues Cha Cha by Edgar Blanchard & The Gondoliers, Goofer by Paul Marvin, and Nothing Without You, Satisfied With Your Love, and Ain't You Ashamed by Eddie Bo. Housed in a 7" title sticker slipcase box with 8-page booklet).

Day 7: Eccentric Soul 45 boxes rock—$40

Boddie Acetate Box 3x45 (ESBOX-001) Culled from the Boddie Recording Company’s massive tape archive, this triple-45 box set captures the essence of Thomas Boddie’s custom recording outfit. Recorded in the late ’60s and early ’70s, the performers from all three discs are completely unknown, save for the fact that they cut two killer cuts before disappearing. Housed in a stark, white box and wrapped in Boddie-branded kraft tape for maximum minimalist effect.

Little Ed & The Soundmasters 3x45 (ESBOX-002) Collected here in a handsome 3x45 box set, Chicago’s only blues-funk family band with an eight-year-old drummer finally gets its due. Chock-full of photos stripped from family albums, the complete Soundmasters story is laid out in all of its child labor law-breaking glory, from their earliest days backing J. B. Hutto to their damaged, Vietnam vet-turned-cop lead singer Johnny Dollar.

Syl Johnson Mythological 45s 5x45 (ESBOX-003) If there was one complaint we heard about Syl Johnson's massive 6LP/4CD overview Complete Mythology, it was its lack of portability. At 6.5 pounds, it doesn't travel well between DJ gigs. And with a dozen previously unreleased undeniable floor fillers, it wasn't long before folks began clamoring for a handful of these tunes on the compact 45 format. Sprawled across five 45s and wrapped in a custom Syl Johnson kraft tape, the 10 songs packaged within cover a range of black music styles. From the uptempo northern sound of "Do You Know What Love Is" to the work out funk of "Right On," this limited edition singles box is an instant party starter. Very few copies available!

Day 8: The Twinight before Christmas—$40

Eccentric Soul: Twinight’s Lunar Rotation 4xLP (NUM013) Operated by a pair of cutthroat radio promotion men, Chicago’s Twinight label made its strides via “friendola”—the trading of favors, not dollars, for local radio airplay. Much of the outfit’s 56-single output—excepting the work of bona fide hitmaker Syl Johnson—was written and recorded by moonlighting on-air talent eager for a leg up in the Second City’s notoriously crooked record racket. Twinight’s Lunar Rotation spins 54 cuts on 4 LPs—into works of true soul beauty revealed by the light of a new day.

Day 9: Salsa Clause is coming to town—$30

Salsa Boricua De Chicago 2xLP (NUM036) Far from the twin epicenters of New York and Miami, Carlos Ruiz and his Ebirac label were both feeling and generating the aftershocks of the mid-’70s salsa boom. Holed up in their own bustling Puerto Rican community center on Chicago’s west side, these third coast salseros plied their trade outside the hot lights, cutting their teeth in city parks, VFW halls, and Holiday Inn rec rooms. Nearly 50 records survive in the wake of orquestas La Justicia, La Solucion, and Tipica Leal ’79, the most impassioned, singular moments of which are compiled here. The 15-track 2LP is accompanied by a 24-page perfect-bound book, crammed with photos, flyers, notes on this vibrant salsa scene, and replicas of the Ebirac label’s four distinct albums, all housed in a litho-wrapped slipcase.

Ebirac 45s x 6 — Six original Ebirac dead-stock 45 finds from Orquesta La Solucion, Orquesta La Justicia and Tipica Leal 79 Jazz Quintet.

Ebirac LPs x 2
Orquesta La Justicia – Salsa Con Nostalgia
Orquesta La Solucion – Desde Mi Barrio

Day 10: Let it Syl, let it Syl, let it Syl—$70

Syl Johnson: Complete Mythology 6LP + 4CD (NUM032) Joining Otis, Wilson, and Percy, plus both Sam and Dave, is a new deity in the eternal soul pantheon. Take it from Syl Johnson himself: “This box set is the history of a masterful artist whose time has just arrived.” The self-proclaimed “most sampled artist ever,” Syl finally gets his due on this 4CD+6LP box covering his most productive period, 1959 through 1972. Collected for the first time are all of Syl’s Federal, Twinight, Zachron, Special Agent, Cha Cha, and TMP-Ting 45s, plus period cuts from his Japan-only LP Goodie Goodie Good Times, and a murderer’s grip of previously unreleased and little-heard out-takes. Lovingly remastered from the original source tapes, these 81 songs never sounded sharper, clearer, or funkier. And historian Bill Dahl’s comprehensive track-by-track annotations bring deep-research backstory to every one. Our handsomely detailed and artfully crafted 40 page, 12” x 12” booklet also features a 13,000-word biography, scores of unpublished photos, a must-read index covering the history of every Syl-sampling artist (paid-up or otherwise), and the most complete and accurate discography you’re likely to find in this universe. Packaged to deliver top-quality vinyl and CDs together, along with replica LP pressings of both the original Is It Because I’m Black and Dresses Too Short albums, Complete Mythology, five years in the making, makes up for every lost nanosecond by being the definitive Syl Johnson document.

Syl Johnson Coin—limited collectors coin featuring the Chicago legend on one side with the Numero logo on the other side. Settle bets, do magic tricks, or melt for scrap. Your choice!

ES013 - The Deacons & Fabulous Fascinators feat. the Royal Revue - Sock It To Me b/w Is It Because I'm Black 45

Day 12: Christmas Lights: On The South Side—$50

Light On The South Side 2xLP + Book (NUM033) Between 1975 and '77, Chicago’s southside nightclubs were experiencing dark times. The after-hours routine may have been on the up, but the sound of urban blues was on its way down, getting funkier, heavier, picking up a Zeppelin echo from the British rock scene that had raided its larder. Thankfully, lightening came by way of a lanky white guy skulking from club to club with a camera and strobe light. Chicago photographer Michael Abramson hit Perv’s House, Pepper’s Hideout, The High Chaparral, The Patio Lounge, and The Showcase Lounge nightly, not to capture the artists on stage but instead popping off a half-dozen rolls every night exclusively on the seldom photographed crowd. Light: On The South Side gathers more than 100 beautiful black and white Abramson images, as Numero shines its own light on yet another dark corner of the musical past. The 132-page hardback book features not just these photos, but an extended and wildly colorful ephemera section, plus an essay by British novelist and Numero fan Nick Hornby. Housed in a gorgeous slipcase with the 12X12 monograph is the 2LP set Pepper’s Jukebox, a 17-track compilation of Chicago blues in transition, as heard from both the stage and the Wurlitzer. The deluxe 2LP set, featuring tracks by Little Mac Simmons, Arlean Brown, Bobby Rush, Lady Margo, Little Ed, and a dozen other modern blues artists, is packaged in a sharp gatefold jacket with two inner sleeves crammed with label scans and stories. All in all, it’s the classiest Numero record ever made, our first Grammy-nominated product, its 2" spine spotted easily from across any discerning record archive.

Day 12: O Omnibus, O Omnibus—$225

Well alright!!!

NUM048 Warfaring Strangers: Darkscorch Canticles 2LP/CD

Okay wow. This is pretty much as up my alley as a thing can be.

Holy moly, just listened to the Cowley. Some of those reviewers seem to be projecting from the press sheet: the music doesn't seem freaky in the let's-fist-again sense, although in the gen. sense that freaks=all us seekers, incl. hippies--yeah: especially the one that gets me up on my feet, dancing way past the point that the headphones come unplugged, and the volume somehow goes to max, and even the laptop speakers know how to sing it, and I'm dancing through beads and chimes with the love goddesses (and Andy Kaufman)---that would be "Seven Sacred Pools." At first, it seems like it's gonna be some filigree brushing by the ever-reliable textures of pulsation (as may happen too much on some tracks: like, just give me that beat cluster and hold the nerfy tweets). But it is 15 minutes and change, most of which seems so so necessary, in a laidback but fully involving way. Also the way he holds a keyboard whirlpool in place, presses, extends the shades---that would be "Tides of Man." (elsewhere, he can gradually meld the keys into really good jazz woodwinds, etc.) The title track, "School Daze" is quite the neon compact; guess I could see this as theme for porn, or a really sharp 70s science show.
