Want something new but am flummoxed by wide variety of things available. Have really liked: Golden Afrique, Love's a Real Thing, igeria 70, Nigeria Rock Special, Opika Pende.
Where to go from here?

African Scream Contest.

African Scream Contest is a good one; so is The World Ends: Afro-Rock & Psychedelia in 1970s Nigeria.
― 誤訳侮辱, Sunday, 2 December 2012 03:38 (twelve years ago)
I agree - The World Ends is great, too.
― EZ Snappin, Sunday, 2 December 2012 03:42 (twelve years ago)
i wouldn't really call them 'rock' but both ghana soundz are a+
― mookieproof, Sunday, 2 December 2012 03:45 (twelve years ago)
Am totally open to non-rock (e.g. am listening to Opika Pende disc 4 right now which is in no way rock) -- just that the category of "African music" as a whole seems too vast to contemplate. I guess I mean "African music which in some way reflects contact between Africa and non-Africa" or something.

this thread seems to stress the latin american stuff, but soundway is very good in general

That Rob album is pretty great. There may be 2 or more reissued now but it's just called Rob I think.
― brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 2 December 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago)
There's Funky Rob Way and Make It Fast, Make It Slow on Soundway, I think, and they're both awesome.

Amanaz Africa if you haven't already heard it. Or Hedzoleh Soundz on Soundway or Edzayawa Project One.Or Blo!'s Chapters and Phases 2fer which is almost krautrocky in places.Ofege's first lp Try and Love features the same guitarist overdubbed on a pretty good lp otherwise too.Orchestra Polyrythmo de Cotonou shouldn't need to be said, the one with th ekung-fu posed cover especially.Witch's We Intend to Cause Havoc is a pretty cheap comprehensive covering of the band.
& I'd get Osibisa's 1st 2 on BGO since they seem to have been a big influence on what came after. Several of the liner note interviews in individual African lp cds directly cited them.

Bambara Mystic Soul is a good album - funky and psychedelic

2nd the praise for Orchestra Polyrythmo de Cotonou. Probably the thing i've played the most out of the huge stack of Soundway/Analog Africa cd's i've bought. The Vondoun Effect is pretty great but I haven't been disappointed in one yet.

2nd the Witch recommendation. The first disc of the set is insanely catchy.

I don't know what it means to be a CD guy but my means of obtaining these records is going to be to go to my nbhd record store and purchase the CDs, yeah -- those guys turned me on to this genre of music in the first place so I think they deserve my business.
