obv that means it's awesome

It's more engaging than the dirge section of Maya but it feels unfinished.

Based off of everything I've heard so far, this forthcoming album seems like a significant step up from Maya

dyl, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 19:08 (twelve years ago)

i like the new track but don't know if it's a "step up". the thing about MAYA is that it's secretly amazing.

Treeship, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 19:50 (twelve years ago)

not with that horribly draggy middle section

big black nemesis, Puya chilensis (DJP), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

I hope you're not knocking Teqkilla, because that's one of the best aural evocations of being drunk I've heard.

MatthewK, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 10:23 (twelve years ago)

Why would I knock the best song on the album?

big black nemesis, Puya chilensis (DJP), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:04 (twelve years ago)

Teqkilla is great. It goes beyond evoking drunkenness. Those ultra-compressed analog synth stabs seem designed to induce hangovers.

Lovalot is where it all falls apart.

Moodles, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:15 (twelve years ago)

The off-kilter Opal sample "Lovalot" is my favorite thing on the album

The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:26 (twelve years ago)

sample on*

The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:26 (twelve years ago)

yeah "Lovalot" rules too

"Story To Be Told" through "It Iz What It Iz" is straight up intolerable though

big black nemesis, Puya chilensis (DJP), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:27 (twelve years ago)

naw those songs are cool as a mid-album respite. only track on Maya I don't fux with is the Sleigh Bells one

The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:38 (twelve years ago)

more like Sleigh Balls amirite

The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:38 (twelve years ago)

lovealot is rad.

Treeship, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)

i disagree with DJP on this one. i love when it gets lazy and meandering between Lovalot and It iz what it iz. Just overall, I love the sounds she is working with, like retrofuturist 90s internet stuff, return of the very recently repressed. It sounds dystopian, but like M.I.A. has found a way to thrive in this anarchic digital future.

Treeship, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

i at least half like those watery midsection tracks too, though i've never associated them with yesterday's internet futurism. they're not great by any means, but pleasant enough, half catchy, and a welcome respite from the noize.

Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 14:35 (twelve years ago)

just because it's clangy and anarchic and the internet today is much smoother and more functional than, i think, people would have imagined just ten years ago.

Treeship, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 14:38 (twelve years ago)

there is almost never a need for respite from noize

I think a lot of critics penalize her over her lyrics

Moodles, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 20:27 (eleven years ago)

her lyrics have been simple and repetitive since day 1; they function for me as impressionistic padding for the beats that evoke imagery rather than specific storytelling (which make instances of specific storytelling like "Sunshowers" stand out and hit harder IMO)

the doleful cant of a bigot blinded by fear and hate (DJP), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago)

bored of Canada (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 23:07 (eleven years ago)

i miss when she didnt sound so pissed off all the time, even the beats on this are kinda distorted and brittle. its pretty fab all the same though - she sounds oddly comfortable but not complacent - like shes happy in herself but frustrated that she still isnt where she wants to be. that guardian interview made me love her more than i already do.

"Sexodus" is kinda beautiful.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:31 (eleven years ago)

i like the quietus review of this a lot particularly w/r/t authenticity/being a 2nd generation immigrant (even if it bashes assange which is just way too easy these days), but not sure about sexodus - it seems to position MIA in a very sexual way which i dont think shes really done before, i always thought she was interesting for having resisted the usual route female artists have to go down. it also sounds way too much like a weeknd song on an MIA album. i find the album brilliant, esp sonically, but also hard work to really get to grips with - its pretty slippery and seems to lack hooks to really sink your teeth into.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 09:00 (eleven years ago)

I tend to skip Sexadus for the reason you mention AND because it's so corny and weird (and ineffective), like that song on Kala with timbaland

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 11:58 (eleven years ago)

its really silly (not in a fun way either, its just a groaner). not really surprised madonna passed on it.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:04 (eleven years ago)

Interesting, for I've barely heard the lyrics after a month with this thing.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:07 (eleven years ago)

i dont think the record is cluttered or anything but yeah theres something very 'busy' about it that i think means it seems quite dazzling but also means it doesnt achieve much in the way of 'clarity of purpose' or whatever (though maybe i just need to spend more time with it, i just remember every time i heard it, its been pretty overwhelming)

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:37 (eleven years ago)

thx stilladvance

i'm pretty surprised i like "sexodus" myself, on paper it really shouldn't work. reprising "exodus" actually works well in terms of the album's sequencing. sort of interesting how little is actually changed, if she wanted to make some sort of point about the political vs the erotic she could have really laid it on thick, but she restrains herself from doing that - the strength of the music carries it.

don't think i'd have ever guessed the weeknd's involvement if he hadn't been credited.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:46 (eleven years ago)

the album's full of hooks imo, it's pretty messy and overwhelming but they're there. it definitely coheres in the second half - the first three proper songs are amazing but probably as difficult as the album gets, then you get two absolutely dreadful clunkers, then "exodus" as a much-needed breathing space that's still completely unexpected, then "bad girls" which really doesn't need to be on this album in any way, and THEN it kicks into gear and doesn't let up

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:49 (eleven years ago)

(i don't think i'll ever stop hating on "come walk with me", it's just a wretched wretched song)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:49 (eleven years ago)

yeah when The Singles Jukebox reviewed it I gave it a middling score without quite figuring out what irritated me. Now I realize: it all comes down to the "fucks with me" part.

the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:54 (eleven years ago)

it has the most irritating lumbering melody

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:57 (eleven years ago)
