article if you are interested in this sort of thing:

as a plus, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is also now in the same situation, so basically if you dig classical music, move somewhere else.

Apparently this was Grammy nominated.

Cut the Bull Entertainment's logo, by the way, is a cartoon bull, glimpsed from behind, with an oversized pair of scissors snipping through a neat, froyo-like swirl of feces. The bull looks angry; his anus is dilated.

The lists of first-ballot options for the dance/electronic categories are very short. Most labels/artists and other academy members don't know/care to submit, it seems -- so the categories are especially prone to "weirdness."

Andy K, Thursday, 6 December 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

This is the third year in a row that a song from Megadeth's Th1rt3en has been up for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. "Sudden Death" in 2011 (back when it was a non-LP track for a video game soundtrack), "Public Enemy No. 1" in 2012, "Whose Life (Is It Anyways?)" in 2013.

in less ludicrous news, I know the dude who was nominated for conducting Handel's "Israel in Egypt" pretty well; I've sung with him a few times and we have a shit-ton of mutual friends

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Thursday, 6 December 2012 18:12 (eleven years ago) link

On that tip, Alabama Shakes are from the next town over from my hometown. I do not know any of them, but we have mutual friends/acquaintances.

A thing I have heard about the Grammys from people who work directly with people who have Grammys on their shelves: getting nominated involves direct lobbying. You let everybody know (or your manager does; the artist is probably not even aware of this much of the time), even sometimes when the album's being made, that you are aiming for the Grammy. Getting nominated involves going to LA or NY or SXSW or wherever else and giving private-party concerts (like, in hotel suites) for members of NARAS where they can hear from your people that you think you're really in Grammy territory with your latest. And then your people keep calling, emailing, whatever, making sure the people you met gave the album a listen, it's not lobbying in terms of "do you think you'll give us the Grammy?", it's classic old-school music-biz "Did you give the music a listen? Amazing, right? Let me know if you need anything" (nb this is a thing biz people say and I still don't know what they mean). Aerosmith told anyone who cared to listen that we were "going for the Grammy" as soon as we'd put our latest to tape, but evidently nobody in our families are members of NARAS, so I got a big old middle finger for the NARAS posse, come and get it you assholes, you know our shit is better than fuckin' Fun, step off that trash and give me my damn Grammy

too many encores (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 7 December 2012 15:08 (eleven years ago) link

I assume that's code for "I have a truck full of coke waiting around the corner, just say the word"

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Friday, 7 December 2012 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

they say it all the time, and I have tried every angle short of "do you mean cocaine?", and yet they never actually break out the 8-ball

I have always made commercial music. The people who vote for the Grammy nominees are mostly in their 40's and have other jobs or are musicians themselves. They like music that they can relate to -- they like commercial music.

The one honest man!

None of those film scores are in top 5 territory IMO but at least 2 of them are well above average so that's something.

that is terrible news about the Minnesota Orchestra seeing as they've been artistically on unbelievable form under Vanska.
