You, from New York, you are so relevant
You reduce me to cosmic tears
Luminous more so than most anyone
Unapologetically alive
Knot in my stomach and lump in my throat

Are you still mad I kicked you out of bed?
Are you still mad I gave you ultimatums?
Are you still mad I compared you to all my 40-year-old male friends?
Are you still mad I shared our problems with everybody?

"I was hoping we could be creamy together"

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 6 December 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago)

What the fuck does that even mean?

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 6 December 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, this is "So Pure"'s to lose IMO - but I really dig "Front Row" and "Thank U" felt super special to me when it landed back in tenth grade. There's a pretty good 11-track album somewhere in this thing, especially if the time spent on the bulk had been spent adding a little more detail to some of the better songs...a lot of these in my memory kind of lean hard on one loop/riff/sound/whatever.

Actually, damn, I'm thinking of voting "Front Row" - I probably get that stuck in my head most of anything on here. Like, okay, on the one hand this is over-worded amateur poetry slam stuff but on the other hand it feels pretty damn real sometimes:

Slid into the ditch -
I have this overwhelming loss of ambition, we said,
"let's name thirty good reasons
why we shouldn't be together"
I started by saying things like, "You smoke," "You live in New Jersey"
You started saying things like "You belong to the world"
All of which could have been easily refuted
But the conversation was
Hypothetical, I am totally short of breath for you
why can't you shut your stuff off

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 December 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago)

I love how you say "on the one hand this is over-worded amateur poetry slam stuff but on the other hand it feels pretty damn real sometimes" as if it's exclusive to just one Alanis song

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 6 December 2012 17:56 (twelve years ago)

She writes songs like a precocious 10th grade English student

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 6 December 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago)

god I FUCKING LOVE THIS WOMAN

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 6 December 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago)

haha totally, yeah, it's like 90% of her lyrics yeah but certain songs cut through and hit me more than others.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 December 2012 18:00 (twelve years ago)

This album is pretty underrated. I think they launched it with the wrong single. I believe people were waiting for a rocker after "Uninvited", and "Joining You" would've been a better choice than "Thank You" as 1st single.
I really like "That I Would Be Good".

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 6 December 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago)

Maybe true about "Joining You," but I honestly don't think there's anything here that screams "hit single" on the order of the Jagged Little Pill hits. This was sort of doomed to sophomore-slump no matter how you slice it, I think.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 6 December 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago)

I am amazed by the jjj admission here

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Thursday, 6 December 2012 20:26 (twelve years ago)

so far of the three songs I've played off of this, I feel like this album's inspiration point was someone on a lot of drugs listening to "Stay" and thinking "THIS IS TOO DIRECT"

The Shakespeare's Sister song?

the Dave Matthews Band song

jawn valjawn (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 6 December 2012 21:32 (twelve years ago)

Dave Matthews,
I like you a lot
and I realize that you're in a relationship right now, and I respect that
I would like you to know that if you're ever single in the future
And you want to come visit me in California
I would be open to spending time with you
and finding out how old you were when you wrote your very first song

Dave Matthews,
you rocked my world

Revelation: the reason she's on antibiotics on in ''Thank U'' is that she ignored Dave's advice re: THE WAAATERRRR. Whether or not she was there when the bear ate his head and thought it was a candayyy is unclear.

otm. "That I Would Be Good" is on a level all its own here.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 7 December 2012 06:32 (twelve years ago)

I don't recognize any of these songs apart from Thank You and That I Would Be Good so I wont be voting. Am I missing on something here? I have the idea that this sort of songs don't make any sense if you listen to them past seventeen.

Moka, Friday, 7 December 2012 07:04 (twelve years ago)

Ha! I say the same thing about Rush.

this album was my LIFE in high school, i vividly remember stomping around campus listening to it and feeling like i could SO RELATE. which is a bit silly since so much of the album is absurdly specific to alanis's life and career, but i can see why i went for the baby-Buddhism present in "that i would be good" and "would not come" (i never liked "thank u," too ~mainstream~ i think).

i think i rate this album more highly than the songwriting merits because it's the last alanis album to mix self-reflection with anger, bitterness, and blame; after this she gets very new-agey and positivity-focused and the emotions she depicts don't feel as immediate. (she gets around this with "hands clean" by presenting a sordid situation in a deceptively matter-of-fact way, a kind of "just sayin'" that ends up being really unsettling, imo.) anyway i love the angry bits of this album, the petulance in "are you still mad," the fuming at how male anger is allowed to express itself in "sympathetic character," her wrestling with privilege in "i was hoping." and i have a soft spot for "the couch" even though it is basically a high school creative writing exercise set to music.

no idea what i'm going to vote for. in terms of songs i'd relisten to now, i really enjoy "front row" and "baba" sonically.

six years pass...

How does one follow-up the multi-million unit shifting Jagged Little Pill? With an overlong, overstuffed, over-wordy, far less accessible record that probably wasn't a good idea in a commercial sense, and not all of it hits the mark, and some of the lyrics are more than a bit silly. However, I'm glad that she made this record. Love 'Baba', 'Thank U', 'That I Would Be Good', 'UR', 'I Was Hoping', 'One' and 'Unsent' ...

i adore this album btw

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 9 June 2023 15:46 (two years ago)

like just for instance every verse of "unsent" starts off in about the corniest way imaginable and then winds up being extremely real, and that's sort of a microcosm of this album as a whole

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 9 June 2023 15:48 (two years ago)

Hmmm I don’t think I’ve ever heard this album besides “thank you”… I’ll listen to it right now

the first mp3 I ever downloaded was thank u, I downloaded it from mp3.com (lol) and as I recall it was the first time any major artist offered an mp3 of a new single, for free, to download, mp3.com!

my family was very impressed that we just had the new Alanis single on the family computer somehow? to listen to whenever, it was a pretty big deal please get off my lawn

Florin Cuchares, Friday, 9 June 2023 19:49 (two years ago)

I think Bowie beat her iirc.

Mark G, Saturday, 10 June 2023 11:51 (two years ago)

I guess I should hear this album but I'm still haunted many years later by Alfred's suggestion that "you oughta know" has a part where she sings about going down on FLEA in a theater.
