HEAR THAT, HELEN? It's the Mystikal - "Hit Me" thread

Normally this might get lost in the regional thug thread or something but I imagine a lot of non-goons will love this, cause it's the most fun thing I've heard in a while so....

After all those writers couldn't fall over themselves any faster to say he sounded like James Brown, he finally gives in and indulges in that instinct with a live band, in between riffing on Michael Jackson and "Brick House" and Muhammad Ali and ranting about tom-toms and Abbott & Costello and the alphabet. I have like 18 different favorite parts of this song.

thats too bad, this is possibly my favorite song of 2012. i can't remember any other time this year when i heard a song 12 times in 24 hours and still wanted to hear it more. i'm excited for 2-3 weeks from now when i have the whole thing memorized.

billstevejim, Sunday, 9 December 2012 02:49 (twelve years ago)

I think that's too bad for YOU

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 December 2012 02:55 (twelve years ago)

i am glad this is kind of a mess production-wise and not as good as i was expecting because i never thought i'd be saying this but lex otm i don't want to give this douchebag the time of day though it's undeniable that at one point he'd made some of my favorite singles of the new millennium but we all must draw our own particular lines.

the oral history of (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Sunday, 9 December 2012 03:00 (twelve years ago)

so if that's the case, are you also opposed to the music he made prior to 2003?

i mean, your perspective is totally valid. although, he's spent a long time in prison. one would think he's probably reformed and understands that he did something horribly wrong, and he wants to make music again. and shockingly, he's still just as talented.

to be honest, chris brown's situation bothers me a thousand times more than mystikal. at least mystikal paid up.

billstevejim, Sunday, 9 December 2012 03:30 (twelve years ago)

and to be honest i wasn't 100% informed about the extent of his wrongdoing until the past 30 minutes or so.

billstevejim, Sunday, 9 December 2012 03:32 (twelve years ago)

apparently he just did another couple months this year for parole violation after a domestic dispute, but I own too much Mamas & The Papas and James Brown to ever suggest someone shouldn't listen to a song because of the crimes the artist committed off record. That said, while this track is pretty novel, I'm not exactly in a rush to let it get its hooks in or anything.

da croupier, Sunday, 9 December 2012 03:57 (twelve years ago)

kinda don't want this to blow up if only for the inevitable deluge of thinkpieces about what supporting a song from a convicted rapist ~means~

(this is really, really dope ftr, although i do feel conflicted about supporting it)

this song is incredible... it's gonna be a shame when baby keeps pushing him to do generic 2012 radio grabs

J0rdan S., Sunday, 9 December 2012 10:41 (twelve years ago)

yeah i dunno this song feels kind of like a reboot after "Original" was a much more generic 2012 radio grab kind of comeback single a year ago, after that didn't do much maybe this signals a new approach. or even if it's one-off, it's all good really.

some dude, Sunday, 9 December 2012 12:01 (twelve years ago)

so if that's the case, are you also opposed to the music he made prior to 2003?

so conflicted b/c some of those singles weren't just "oh a hot beat" or "a hot radio jam" but all-time classics. being a FUCKING RAPIST isn't just a musician being an asshole or whatever.

when it comes to whether someone is ~reformed~ - there are ways and means, particularly if your career depends on public support, of making it known that you've reformed. donate or work or publicly support a survivors' charity or women's refuge or something.

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Sunday, 9 December 2012 12:18 (twelve years ago)

when you say "i want reparations" in your post-release interview, you're probably not "reformed"

epic album: the pluto (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 17 December 2012 03:14 (twelve years ago)

Mystikal is not associated with No Limit anymore.

And furthermore, as a hip hop fan in the late 90's, No Limit was one of the major contributing factors to the downfall of the genre.

So yes, I do feel it's necessary to keep his association with the label in the discussion.

To me, it felt like the people associated with No Limit were real life scumbags. In addition to the music being everything I hated, they seemed like detestable people as well.

And then, Mystikal raped someone.

(Imagine that: someone who's biggest song was entitled "Shake Ya Ass" was imprisoned on sexual assault charges.)

I'm probably the dumbest person on this board, but even I called that one.

Sorry that some of you folks have your pseudo-critic spoons up your butts so far that you have hard time comprehending that something can be "post" in terms of timelines and have nothing to do with music.

But hey, you guys get paid to write about music. What the fuck do I know.

Rapists deserve hype.

Austin, Monday, 17 December 2012 05:40 (twelve years ago)

small-scale fux with (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Monday, 17 December 2012 06:24 (twelve years ago)

See? I'm hella dumb ya'll!

I don't know shit!

No Limit was Puffy's post-Notorious B.I.G. Bad Boy on crack, equipped with too loud sixteenth note hi-hats. The worst G-Funk stereotypes magnified. If early and mid-80's synth-pop was seen as disposable and gimmicky by the mid and late 90's, this stuff should now be asserted to similarly shameful reassessments.

But somehow, Ca$h Money Records (proper spelling) is the post-apocalyptic warlord tyrant. We're still not yet emerged from those dark times. Have you read Eden by Stanislaw Lem? It's kind of like that. Best for us to repair the ship and get the hell out of there.

Nickelback and Linkin Park made me laugh every time I heard them too. Don't fall into that hole. Funny does not = good.

Son of Bazerk's album was bad, too. If the Bomb Squad's name had not been on it, I never would have felt any sort of allegiance in the first place.
