I don't know why but that's left me feeling slightly depressed...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Sunday, 9 December 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago)

Seeing this on TV in 1979 was one of my formative experiences, one of the influences that made me want to be a musician.

That was a great trip back in time for me - I watched that as a ten year old and thought "That looks like fun". Now I watch it and think "I'd love that equipment, was that a Korg there?". Favourite part? That squeal of feedback as he is about to play the guitar solo.

acoustic bass, it's like an electric bass except it's all made of wood

Nice to see that again. For all these years, I'd got into my head that the whole thing was speeded up - I'd remembered the tape-speed cheat but not the specifics.

Slightly longer version (the one at the top of the thread is from a later 'request yer fave clips yer snivelling brats' BP episode, hence the appearance of Peter 'art movie' Duncan)

(still shite picture quality, so bad luck fellow synth spotters)

Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Sunday, 9 December 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago)

The first synth is a ARP Solina String Ensemble, with the keyboard for a Moog modular balanced on top of it, and presumable the rest of the modular somewhere in the gloom behind it. No idea about the preset synth used for the 'sped up' bit.

In the longer second clip, which shows the whole process, there's an ARP 2600 providing the click track somewhere in shot at the start which Mike then plays the acoustic guitar to.

yes i love that too, that's my favorite. the "gadgets called synthesizers" is pretty great too though, and i am always a fan of his seriousface.
