Twenty years late (as is my style), but as a recent discoverer of this band I am deeply in love. They evoke the coldness and bleakness I crave in classic 2nd-wave BM, but with a sense of grandeur and theater that always (at least for the records I know) stays on the right side of egregious bombast. There's more of a whiff of "classic metal" to them, in my estimation, than the other 2nd-wave big guns--which may work as a point for or against them depending on your perspective. Have at it...

I can't decide if I like the brain-rattling rush of Battles or the more stately atmospheric-ness of At the Heart of Winter better myself.

Blizzard Beasts is getting my vote since it probably won't get anyone elses and it's a personal favorite.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 9 December 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago)

Torn between At The Heart of Winter and Sons of Northern Darkness.

Pure Holocaust is just plain awesome so I have to go for that one - I do like Blizzard Beasts as well though.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Monday, 10 December 2012 15:13 (twelve years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

First five records are straight up classics, not a weak riff to be found and excellent songwriting. I think Blizzard Beasts could've been much much better if it wasn't for that godawful production job. It's most noticable when they play the songs live. I don't know if it's the fault of this Henrikke Helland dude that engineered it, or the band, or anyone else, but it sounds like ass - too quiet, totally flat and stiff.

Battles for me btw, should be no surprise. It barely holds together. Every song has double bass, all the time. It's so fuckin awesome.

Sons of Northern Darkness is a fucking masterpiece imo

too many encores (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:11 (twelve years ago)

between 'pure holocaust' (1st one i heard) and 'sons of northern darkness' for me, tho' i haven't heard 'diabolical fullmoon mysticism' (bathory-worship, right? not that i have a problem with that), 'blizzard beasts' or 'all shall fall'. my favourite song's on 'battles': 'blashyrkh'.

Pure Holocaust!

endless budgie (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 13 December 2012 10:27 (twelve years ago)

This is actually a really hard question. I still can't decide. I'm trying not to let the sheer earth-melting amazingness of the final track on Sons of Northern Darkness skew me too much.

Clarke B., Thursday, 13 December 2012 14:25 (twelve years ago)

Wound up voting Sons of Northern Darkness.

Saw them live supporting that album - part of an ill-fated tour headlined by Halford and also featuring Amon Amarth, Primal Fear, Testament, and a couple of other bands.

I realize that Damned in Black gets overshadowed by the amazing thing that came afterward, but tracks 3-7 are some of Immortal's best, esp "Against the Tide" and the title track. That said, I still can't decide between AtHoW and Sons.

Wait did something Abbathian happen? I see they performed at Heavy Montreal.

At the Heart of Winter shoulda fuckin' walked this

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 03:42 (eight years ago)

It definitely should've gotten more than one vote. And it's not even my favorite Immortal album.

Having only heard the first five, it's got to be At the Heart of Winter, with Battles in the North a close second. That said, Immortal is probably my least favourite of the 'big' second wave Norwegian BM bands. Perhaps I'll change my mind once I hear their postmillennial stuff.

pomenitul, Friday, 26 May 2017 21:24 (eight years ago)

the atmosphere on Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism is out of this world. that, Bergtatt, Aspera Hiems Symfonia, Nemesis Divina, DMDS, and the BIG TWO Emperor albums were my first exposure to Norwegian black metal, and despite the genre going to some remarkable places over the years, nothing quite compares to the sound of the stuff from those early days
