djp just reminded me that elle varner's mixtape was one of my favorite things in 2012 and I think she needs her own threeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddd

love her

i never even listened to the mixtape but i fuck w/ the album, "Stop The Clock" is incredible

she's alright, her album's alright, find her a bit cloying myself on the whole tho

nice but nbd really

yeah her voice/persona can be OTT and corny, but i am swayed by the strength of the production and also that she is v cute

'sound proof room' off the album is probably the song i find most enjoyable besides 'refill' and i guess it works in a similarish fashion - anachronous heatmakerz throwback beat matching her for goofy exuberance

"Sound Proof Room" is the song I go back to the most but I do think the entire album bangs

'i don't care' is a really nice knockoff jill scott joint but lacks scott's groundedness to make it feel like anything more than coffee shop shallow

"I Don't Care" and "Oh What A Night" are fine in the context of the album but were not good single choices, unfortunate that they blew the momentum she had going

i wonder what the story is w/ her writing credit on Miguel's "Use Me," if it was going to be her song in some early form or something

tbh there's such a nice beauty in 'refill' as a one hit wonder that i am completely unmoved to get my evan on thinking about imaginary momentums

i like this album a lot, not much more to it.

was refill a bigger hit than only wanna give it to you or did the latter just get a lot of airplay around here

oh yeah that's totally creepy but i had my factoid in the chamber

i underrated the album when it came out, i think her voice is kinda an acquired taste (the cloyingness rtc mentions) (plus i don't think i was ever blown away by "refill", i prefer "only wanna give it to you") but i've rediscovered it in the past couple of weeks - just a really strong and cohesive set of songs. "stop the clock" is the secret killer

i'm not really getting how you two concur about the cloy but then ride hard for 'stop the clock', granted it's the best constructed song by far on there but it can't overcome her at probably her most grating and unconvincing imo. required finesse and instead she kinda murdered it?

"Not Tonight" keeps sneaking up on me, not usually a fan for, uh, showtunes-y R&B but her shyness (cloyingness?) helps sell it where a bolder approach would have scared me off - reminds me of J-Hud's "Spotlight" a lil'.

Yeah, there's nothing on the album as good as "Go", "Ghosts", or "Runaway". And the weakest song on the mixtape is somehow the only one to make the album.

What ever happened to Elle Varner? I liked her debut album a lot and she has a fantastic voice. But since then it's been bupkis. I hope the man is not holding her music back.

yeah i miss her, she was so great. everything went so quiet after "don't wanna dance" didn't quite take off

looking at her twitter rn it seems she is active on social media again. it looks she might not be signed anymore and is now self-releasing? maybe i'm misreading

i wonder what happened w/ her and pop & oak now that they've started producing pop hits for alessia cara and demi lovato...

It's weird because that artsy R and B which is so popular now is what she does best. I'm surprised she hasn't released more music.

she's always been quite versatile and a bit quirky but i can't say i anticipated something quite like this from her. she sells it pretty well tho, it almost verges into being too directly heartfelt but still manages to hit the spot for me.
