Pinkish Black (Attn: industrial-goth-metal types)

I guess this is as good a time as any to start a thread for this duo, from the Dallas-Ft Worth area. Specializes in a sort of electro-black metal hybrid. Fellow ILX poster EZSnappin turned me onto them. Their self-released, self-titled first album is up on Bandcamp, and it is def one of the best and most original metal long-players of the year.

This is the last track off of the abovementioned LP; it's called "Against the Door":

http://pinkishblack.bandcamp.com/track/against-the-door-2

In my opinion this is a top 5 track of the year, taking a loop of ugly atonal electronic noise and somehow alchemically transforming it into gothic prog-disco krautrock. Basically a cornucopia of great song ideas that somehow fits together--almost.

send Lawyers (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 10 December 2012 02:21 (twelve years ago)

I'm huge into this band. Incredible record, like a more metal-inclined Suicide.

A. Begrand, Monday, 10 December 2012 02:43 (twelve years ago)

Adrien - speaking of Suicide, the floppy disc is NOT a Suicide cover. It's an 86-second cover of the classic WCW Wrestling theme. Apparently Daron is an old wrestling fanatic.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 December 2012 02:44 (twelve years ago)

This is a solid glimpse at how they make it work live, and how the live sound differs from the record:

http://violitionist.com/2012/10/pinkish-black/

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 December 2012 02:46 (twelve years ago)

Okay, now I really want to hear that floppy disc track.

A. Begrand, Monday, 10 December 2012 04:54 (twelve years ago)

I have it on good authority that it won't be an obscurity forever. No definite plans, but it is being talked about.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 December 2012 05:00 (twelve years ago)

man I have not listened to those Violitionist tracks as of yet, I need to get on that

send Lawyers (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 10 December 2012 05:10 (twelve years ago)

Ok this band rules. I listened to "Against the Door" as I was shopping for tofu puffs and eggs at the Asian market and I seriously thought I was going to puke, but in a good way. It was really overwhelming and trippy, esp by the fish counter. Will listen to the whole thing as soon as I have time to.

passion it person (La Lechera), Thursday, 13 December 2012 00:10 (twelve years ago)

YES! A convert. :)

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 13 December 2012 00:46 (twelve years ago)

yay hooray!

send Lawyers (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:13 (twelve years ago)

^the least industrial-goth-metal utterance ever.

send Lawyers (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:15 (twelve years ago)

I listened to the whole album and now this band kind of reminds me of a combination of Goblin and Yakuza (minus the horns).

passion it person (La Lechera), Tuesday, 18 December 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago)

Their newer stuff is even more in that vein. The next record should really be something.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 18 December 2012 19:38 (twelve years ago)

one month passes...

About to see my fourth show from these guys. Just a bit obsessed.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 7 February 2013 04:07 (twelve years ago)

ay yo this shit is awesome, thread title misleading tho, these guys are totally time travel

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Thursday, 7 February 2013 04:41 (twelve years ago)

The new record is gonna kick so much ass if the live versions are anything to go by. So lucky to have these guys play locally all the time.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 7 February 2013 04:58 (twelve years ago)

sorry bout the mess up :\

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 7 February 2013 05:59 (twelve years ago)

np, thx for bringing this important issue to my attn and responding to constructive feedback in a timely fashion you are a vital and valued member of the teem

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Thursday, 7 February 2013 18:18 (twelve years ago)

what was that? sorry, I was busy staring dumbfounded at your awesome post in the time travel thread

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 7 February 2013 18:23 (twelve years ago)

aw shucks

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Thursday, 7 February 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

two weeks pass...

Tonight will be my fifth time seeing them; sixth will be in a few weeks at a festival I'll be working. New record will be old hat once it's released.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 22 February 2013 14:24 (twelve years ago)

two months pass...

their facebook updates have become a long string of canceled gigs, what's up w/ that

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Thursday, 25 April 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Is everything okay?

pink lady lemoncankles (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 25 April 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)

might be a continuation of this:

Unfortunately, due to a serious illness amongst the band, Pinkish Black has been forced to cancel tonight’s appearance (March 16th) at the BV/Invisible Oranges showcase at The North Door. We wish only the best to the band in this trying time.

http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2013/03/ken-mode-to-replace-pinkish-black-at-io-official-sxsw-showcase/

anonanon, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:02 (twelve years ago)

A different health related issue. Daron's had a shitty last 6 weeks or so.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:58 (twelve years ago)

shitty 6 weeks = stuff that he'll get through, or stuff that could potentially endanger the future of his music / the band?

hope that's not asking too much. just curious.

this band rules.

alpine static, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)

Stuff he should get through, as far as I know, but serious enough (mentally and physically) to really suck. If I hear more or he tells me the things I know are okay to share I will.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)

Second record should be out before June. It's been in their label's hands for a little while now.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

thx, EZS. to be clear, i don't necessarily need or want any more details. just wondering if his life's at stake, tbh.

glad to hear that about the new record.

alpine static, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

coming in late, but wow, "against the door" is really nice. i mean i haven't puked, but i haven't heard the album yet, so anything's possible.

contenderizer, Thursday, 25 April 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)

Been chatting with Daron - he's doing better and they should be back on schedule with gigs starting tomorrow night in Denton.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

thread got dramatic while I was away! that's good news. plus I <3 denton.

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)

contenderizer I think the more you hear the more you will like... at least that was my experience...

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Thursday, 25 April 2013 21:46 (twelve years ago)

E3 you fuck w White Moth, out of curiosity?

pink lady lemoncankles (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 26 April 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)

never heard of 'em! do you dig shooting guns? the band not the activity

unprepared guitar (Edward III), Friday, 26 April 2013 03:11 (twelve years ago)

I only heard a little bit, from Ez I think, appropriately enough. They sounded cool. They from Denton?

pink lady lemoncankles (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 26 April 2013 04:09 (twelve years ago)

Shooting Guns absolutely rule and I can't wait to hear the new album. They're Saskatoon's finest export, and thus were introduced to me by Adrien. I wish they were local to me as Adrien says they're a killer live band too.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 26 April 2013 08:41 (twelve years ago)

Record is rescheduled for fall.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 5 May 2013 06:35 (twelve years ago)

Aw man. I see tgere was something abour a gig w M Geddes Gengras this weekend that u might be going to? Or already have gone to?

we don't take any requests (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 5 May 2013 22:46 (twelve years ago)

that was last night. They were great, M Geddes Gangras solo set was very cool, and Akron/Family isn't really my bag but the crowd loved it.

Off to see the last Pinkish Black show until September when they open for Christian Death. I'm seriously afraid of withdrawal symptoms before then.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 30 June 2013 23:15 (eleven years ago)

was it good?

my super-power is to turn into a bowling ball (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 4 July 2013 02:01 (eleven years ago)

yup. Different setlist than usual too, though all from the new record. Both guys think the break will do them good. Hung out with Daron a bit tonight at the A Band Called Death screening.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 4 July 2013 03:29 (eleven years ago)

right on right on, new record is seriously one of my most anticipated of '13's releases

Kylesa played Chicago in June. They set the tour agenda and aren't hitting all the same markets this time.

Sorry, La Lechera.

I’m biased but it’s great

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 15:29 (six years ago)

Related question, are the Yeti and Pointy Shoe Factory albums worth checking out?

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 17 April 2019 15:33 (six years ago)

Yeti is great 70s German-style prog. The Pointy Shoes is goth cabaret. It has moments.

The Great Tyrant stuff though - that’s amazing

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 16:05 (six years ago)

Yeah I've already checked out all the Great Tyrant stuff, I loved it and was curious about some of those other projects. Yeti is next on my list for sure.
