Roobarb and Custos (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 11:35 (thirteen years ago)

Sam Cooke, Dusty, BOC mentioned in dispatches, Elton John and Prince a shade below them

Albert Crampus (NickB), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

I like Cruel To Be Kind too though.

Albert Crampus (NickB), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 11:48 (thirteen years ago)

Hope I won't be the only vote for Michelle Branch. Regardless, this is a pretty impressive group of songs.

1979 beat out Solid

This is the US Hot 100? I didn't realise Gina G and Cher Lloyd had sold records across the pond, or even tried to.

Jeff W, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 12:40 (thirteen years ago)

I remember a copy of that Gina G album collecting dust in the Sam Goody where I worked. Never heard the song before though.

yeah Cher Lloyd just broke through here a few months ago, so far that's her only hit

top 10: The Boys Are Back In Town > 1999 > Got To Be Real > Don't Fear The Reaper > Photograph > Take It Easy > Life's Been Good > Knockin' On Heaven's Door > Want U Back > 1979

'1979'

2nd place would be either BÖC, Sam Cooke, The Beatles or Nick Lowe.

lolol ya this is such an... interesting list, really no idea what I'd vote for—my first impulse, probably because of the number theme ('#12 hits for 12/12/12!') + critical unassailability of Prince is to vote for "1999"... only thing is, I think I might actually prefer the Michelle Branch song.....

you don't know james blunt's "you're beautiful" (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

also: I'm mildly astonished to learn that "Take It Easy" only made it as high as 12!

you don't know james blunt's "you're beautiful" (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

12/12/12, party over, oops, out of time

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

"Take It Easy" was the Eagles' first single, they didn't start racking up the #1s for a couple more years

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

self-xpost: not that I like the song or anything; I had just always thought of it as one of those era-defining inescapable megahits. I guess it still might have been, via the different radio formats at that time, long half-life on album-oriented stations, etc

oh some dude that makes sense

"1999" is one my least favorite Classic Prince singles.

Descending order:

Knockin on Heaven's Door
The Boys are Back in Town
I Only Want To Be With You
Solid
Wonderful World
Photograph
I'm Still Standing

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

meanwhile, the list of awful songs that it would be criminal to waste even a single vote on looks something like: "Baby I Love Your Way", "She Bangs", "Parents Just Don't Understand" (as much as I enjoy the latter)

you don't know james blunt's "you're beautiful" (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

please do this with 11, thank you

epic album: the pluto (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

"Bittersweet Symphony" has aged in the worst possible way, but I could see voting for it out of nostalgia as a forgivable offense against taste

you don't know james blunt's "you're beautiful" (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:00 (thirteen years ago)

eh Billboard picked out all these songs, i wish i had the access to their database that their writers have (xp)

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

The list of #1's and #41's is heartbreaking = the two worst positions.

I found a #11 list. I'll post it soon.

"The Boys Are Back in Town," Thin Lizzy, 1976
"Got to Be Real," Cheryl Lynn, 1979
"Photograph," Def Leppard, 1983

one of these three. i can't decide yet.

Sam Cooke.

strongo otm. vote for thin lizzy!

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:34 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't investigate Thin Lizzy for years because I thought "The Boys Are Back In TOwn" was a crap song. I love Thin Lizzy to death these days but wouldn't put that tune in the top 40 of their catalog.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:37 (thirteen years ago)

My introduction to Thin Lizzy: Bon Jovi's late eighties cover.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

I'm so sorry Alfred.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

I voted Lizzy because I didn't see Patsy Cline soon enough; anyway it's close enough.

Euler, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

Patsy Cline covering The Boys Are Back would be awesome.

CRUCIAL TYPOS

"Dazzy Duks," Duice, 1983

1993!

also it's "Dazzey"

the lengths that I will go to

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

haha for shame, Billboard

(lol at first i typed "Billyboad")

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

I'm amazed that both Cher Lloyd AND Tinie Tempah have managed to have such (relatively) big hits over there.

Also amazed how many of these are straight-up classics known by everyone, pretty much everything up to and including Prince. Which is kind of weird because nowadays, in the UK at least "peaked at #12" kind of means "flop, will be forgotten within a year".

"Knockin' on Heaven's Door"--BOC close, Patsy Cline and Mama Cass and Kiss after that.

clemenza, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)

UK acts of had kind of a US chart comeback recently, bunch of acts had their first top 10 hit here this year (One Direction, Ellie Goulding, Alex Clare, The Wanted, Jessie J).

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

Between Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline and Dusty for me (yeah lolold, but as I started off the list I was thinking 'man, are they ALL this classic?') No, they're not, but Cheryl Lynn is.

Naked webcam celebrity (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

Patsy, BOC, Lynn, Lowe, Leppard, "Solid", "1979"

g simmel, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

I would have thrown in Elton's "Blue Eyes" just for kicks.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

Don't Fear the 12th Place...

Also, I agree w/ above sentiments... The Boys Are Back In Town was my introduction to Thin Lizzy, upon learning they were also the dudes who did Jailbreak... but since I've become familiar with their whole catalog its one of their weakest songs, IMO. I still like it, but the fact its almost the only TL song that every plays on the radio is a tragedy.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

Wouldn't a POX+2 be more appropriate for this thread than a poll? Make it easier to choose anyways.

and also Cher Lloyd

I'd always assumed "1999" was a chart-topper given how ubiquitous it is on radio and elsewhere

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 22:34 (thirteen years ago)

cher lloyd didn't reach the top 10

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, the whole reason we're talking about UK acts is because Cher Lloyd is someone whose biggest hit recently peaked at #12 and is an option in this poll

some dude, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

Cher Lloyd currently getting a big push from the Simon Cowell machine in the US currently, thus giving her her first American hit. Still not a well-known name here though as far as i can tell.

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

About 75% of these are great. But voting for KISS only because it was the superior live version that was the hit.

jetfan, Thursday, 13 December 2012 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

holy shit there are some good songs in here. IMO:

Sam Cooke > Dusty Springfield > Blue Oyster Cult > Cheryl Lynn > Beatles > Patsy Cline > Joe Walsh > Thin Lizzy > Nick Lowe > Tom Petty > Prince > Smashing Pumpkins > Def Leppard

she was giving it to two friends ...Aaay! (crüt), Thursday, 13 December 2012 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

I feel a little guilty for ranking Tom Petty above Prince, but "I Won't Back Down" is one of my fave Petty songs and I wouldn't say that "1999" is one of my favorite Prince songs (though it is great obv).

Dusty over BÖC for me.

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:51 (thirteen years ago)

"Everywhere" is my favorite, over an underrated Beatles song, "I Only Want to Be With You", and "Cruel to be Kind"

This is kind of self-selecting tho, yeah? Obviously Billboard when making a list like this is going to pick the ones people do remember.

yeah i'm sure you could cherrypick thirty UK #12s people know well and love

'i only want to be with you' then 'dont fear the reaper' then 'the boys are back in town' but actually just voting for 'parents dont understand' because they dont, they never have
