This song came out on an album released this year, and the record sleeve says it's an original composition, but I'm pretty sure the piano bit comes from some much older tune. Can you identify it, it's right at beginning of the song, and plays throughout it.

Anyone?

I listened and didn't recognize it. It sounds kind of almost ~so~ generic that it might be triggering some deja entendu?

No, that's not it.

I think maybe it vaguely reminds you of one of Satie's Gymnopides?

Yeah, Satie was my first thought... But I still feel like I've heard those same chords played in that same way (first slowly, then in faster tempo - what's the musical term for that?) somewhere.

It's not technically a faster tempo on bars 3 or 4, in fact, the tempo slows. It's just moving from stately quarter notes to running eighth notes. There's a glitch in the loop that makes it sound old-timey

six years pass...

Okay, I have another piano bit in my head that feels incredibly familiar, yet I can't quite place:

In this song (The Real Thing: "You to Me Are Everything (The Decade Remix)") there's a memorable piano riff that begins at 1:11 and plays until 1:30. I'm pretty sure that an intro for some well-known '80s TV series has a very similar piano riff, because whenever I hear that Real Thing song, I immediately think of eighties television... But I can't remember what series it is, so maybe you can help?

Could it be the theme to Hill Street Blues?

Don’t know why you chose this remix version from 1986 when that same piano riff is in the 1976 original (preceding any 80s TV series). I could picture it in one of those theme tunes though.

Not sure if it’s relevant to your question, but Wikipedia tells me this: “A Finnish version entitled "Ei enempää voi pyytää" ("He can ask no more") was recorded in 1978 by Petri Pettersson.”

does sound like Hill Street Blues

Yeah, I think it must be the Hill Street Blues theme that I'm thinking of, since it was on Finnish TV in the eighties and I watched it as a kid. Thanks!

I swear I’ve heard the backing piano or something very similar before, is it a sample? It’s driving me crazy that I can’t remember.
