Consonant!!!

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 29 September 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

A couple of the No Man albums were good too.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 29 September 2002 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a Volcano Suns lp... were they on SST? I've long since traded it away. Did it have a song that went "can I have the key to the medicine cabinet... I need some drugs"? Those lyrics were in my mind a few weeks ago... other than that the record didn't leave much of an impact.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 29 September 2002 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

The first two Volcano Suns albs - 'Bright Orange Years' and 'All-Night Lotus Party' - are gd eighties punky hardcore w/ excellent drumming (surprise!, tho' the best thing they ever recorded is a track called 'Greasy Spine', which was thrown away on the B-Side of their 'Sea Cruise' single.

Also Search: the first Dredd Foole and the Din single (which features MOB as backing band) and alb.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 29 September 2002 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Straight To Video = classic

(Straight To Video = David Kleiler (Volcano Suns), Curtis, and Bob Fay (ex-Sebadoh))

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 29 September 2002 07:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Sproton Layer might even be better than Mission Of Burma. It's more fun to listen to.

Scott Seward, Sunday, 29 September 2002 12:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the one No Man Lp I have ("Win! Instantly!") a lot. There was some Ok stuff on this M3 Cd I got free once. I wouldn't have paid for it, though.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 29 September 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

CAREER IN ROCK by Volcano Suns (their last?) is stupendous.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 September 2002 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew's being somewhat of an obscurist re: "Greasy Spine" - it was a Stooges / Joy Division tribute ("No Love Lost"). "Balancing Act" (from Bright Orange Years) is easily Prescott's coup with the Suns. Those first two records are still up in the air - My Pal God (US) has been trying to reissue them for a few years.

Chris Ott, Monday, 30 September 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Alex - Career In Rock was hugely overlooked in the wake of Grunge..."Total Eclipse" is one of their best tunes.

Chris Ott, Monday, 30 September 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, I really don't get yr comment abt being an 'obscurist' - 'Greasy Spine' IS the B-Side of 'Sea Cruise', and it IS pretty much my fave VS track - I dunno abt this "No Love Lost" biz.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 30 September 2002 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Sproton Layer is funny, and has some great moments, but it does sound like some overeducated high school kids trying to outprog themselves.. not even remotely in the same league as MoB.

consonant is fantastic, Volcano Suns sounds like Husker Du to these ears (though I haven't heard a ton of VS, only "Thing of Beauty"), Binary System is the bomb live, and that about sums up what I've heard from the members of MoB aside from MoB...

tinobeat (tinobeat), Monday, 30 September 2002 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure I'd support the Volcano Suns/Husker Du comparison. Yes, they were both trios, but it pretty much ends there. I don't think Peter Prescott has quite the melodic sensibility of Mould/Hart etc. In any event, Steve Albini produced the `Suns' CAREER IN ROCK album, and then absconded with then-bassist Bob Weston to form Shellac, so if Shellac's yer bag, you may dig late-career Volcano Suns.

ALL NIGHT LOTUS PARTY is mighty fine too, not least for "White Elephant" (which, I believe, even MTV used in a promo spot).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 September 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Andrew, no offense, sorry if that seemed snotty, I was just jabbing you in good fun about the indie rock stereotype of liking the rarest song. It is a good song, though I think the feel of it is taken from "No Love Lost".

five years pass...

birdsongs are reissuing all their ace of hearts material as "dawn of the cycads" at the end of the month. i love that stuff and am glad its all going to appear. i was wondering about this topic of burma related bands. anyone else have suggestions?

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 14 September 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

One of the greatest L.A. bands that never had to chance to put out a record was Straight To Video. David Kleiler was the singer/guitarist and Bob Fay was the drummer. Excellent 3-piece. I still play out a demo CD-R I have by them: "Project: Go!" is an anthem.

Mackro Mackro, Monday, 15 September 2008 02:47 (seventeen years ago)

old post from sometime ILM-er Douglas' blog:

So you know how Mission of Burma broke up in 1983, and got back together a couple of years ago, and then they made ONoffON and there was much rejoicing, etc.? Well, there's a missing chapter to the story, and here's part of it: Wrong Pipe's "Kuchkah Tay Zod" (removed), the B-side of a single they made in 1994. Wrong Pipe was a one-off collaboration between Roger Miller (who wrote this one) and Clint Conley (thanks to both of them for permission to post this)--unsurprisingly, it sounds like an alternate-universe version of Burma, with totally different (non-live-band-based) production. Also unsurprisingly, it's awesome. (I sort of wish they'd done some more recording like this, or that they'd do some more recording like this, actually: taking advantage of the incredible chemistry they've got, but free of the obligations of being, y'know, Burma.) Also, the dream-language of the lyrics reminds me a little of Miller's solo album Oh. (guitars, etc.), one of the best bridges I've ever heard between rock and experimental music.

four years pass...

Posting here b/c Volcano Suns doesn't have a dedicated thread...Does anyone else remember a commercial that used "White Elephant" or am I making this up?

First Volcano Suns song I ever heard - was on the Wailing Ultimate compilation that Homestead put out.

i'll be your mraz (NickB), Friday, 6 September 2013 14:43 (twelve years ago)

mission of burma was a good band.

乒乓, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

There should be a Wailing Ultimate poll/thread. Love it. It's one of those records I remember buying -- from Rock Records on Washington in the Loop.

Space Negros is an incredible band name

Master of Treacle, Friday, 6 September 2013 14:51 (twelve years ago)

It was an amazing and important comp for me at the time! I think I eventually ended up buying every single one of the source records, even the Reactions album, though I can't remember that song at all now.

> It was an amazing and important comp for me at the time!

Agreed.

Some google digging says it was used in either a Levi's or Gap ad. Maybe Levi's?

john. a resident of chicago., Friday, 6 September 2013 15:19 (twelve years ago)

i was gonna go to the sproton layer show that was near me recently but i didn't. i'll bet it was great though. fave burma-related album for sure.

scott seward, Friday, 6 September 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

Someone propose a best-of Volcano Suns. I've checked them out and like stuff like "Jak" but find their albums really hit-or-miss.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 6 September 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)

i only really like that song! jak. i even liked it when the throwing muses did it. i was never a big fan. i love the cover of the orange years album though.
