The first band that springs to mind is of course LZ

zep's best hobbit jam

But what else is there? The only others I know off the top of my head are the Pearls Before Swine song and the Nimoy one.

Sally Oldfield's first album The Water Bearer had a three part epic about the elves, "three elven kings under the sky" etc.

Pretenders, "Precious"

Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Friday, 14 December 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago)

Pretenders, "My City Was Gone" is about the scouring of the Shire iirc.

(I like this idea that we can create a narrative whereby Pretenders were a Tolkein concept band.)

Led Zeppelin, but I dont know which songs. I heard that Marc Bolan was obsessed with Tolkien but I dont know his music well enough to say if he wrote songs about that.

Greenslade did a LotR album I'm sure, and a discworld one too!

I'm not sure how I feel about this sort of thing, I heard there is a metal album based on Hodgson's House On The Borderland, one of my favorite books but I'm afraid it might taint my love of the book somehow. I like Lovecraft and many bands inspired by him, but actual songs about his work leave me a bit uncertain that it really works that well. I like "Ancient Ones" by Morbid Angel but I think a soundtrack approach is generally best if you want to make an album about a book.

Hey what's up RAG!!!??!?!?!?!??!

The Zep ones are:

"The Crunge": About the Fellowship's attempts at locating The Bridge at Khazad-Dum.
"The Ocean": About the Elves vanquishing Middle Earth to sail off to the Grey Havens.
"Kashmir": About the special wool that Bilbo's sweaters are made of.

A guy I knew from my scout troop and high school put out a self-released Christian hip hop tape in 1992 or 1993 that featured a couplet ending in "...just like the hobbit bilbo baggins". I wish I could remember the rest. I've never been a big fan of Tolkien, but some of my hippie friends just fell out when they heard that line.
