thanks for all your help you completely useless motherfuckers

simon trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Simon is full of hate. More info -- "Otis" is from Durutti Column's album Vini Reilly, which got reissued a few years back but is out of print again. Good album indeed, but I'd say you also want to check out The Return of the Durutti Column and LC first.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i still dont get it though, are they a indie guitar band, are they a dance act, what the fuck!

simon trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

On the off-chance that you're being sincere about wanting to know more about this, simethan, the song's indeed called "Otis" and it's from the Durutti Column album Vini Reilly. I heard it for the first time on the 24 Hour Party People soundtrack and I realized that I have to get more...ANY Durutti Column. Ned should have answered this more fully, though you really should learn the joys of allmusic.com, because then you'd know what this was about. Quoth Ned:
Another full-on highlight is "Otis," with Pol's live singing and Connell's keyboards combining with a brisk synth loop, building Mitchell drums, an astonishing, uplifting Reilly guitar line, and the legendary singer Mr. Redding himself in a combination that needs to be heard.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned should have answered this more fully

I just did, you punk. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

DAMN YOUR EYES, sneaking in and posting that while I was posting. Dammit!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 September 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

And they're more typically an instrumental band with ambient tendencies, but guitar is Reilly's instrument of choice, yess. I wouldn't consider them a dance band.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 September 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the durutti column/disco inferno/piano magic guitar sound is my favourite guitar sound ever

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 29 September 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

it is a good sound mitch, but as piano magic have grown into it they have got worse. what about gnac/montgolfier?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 30 September 2002 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

are they a indie guitar band, are they a dance act, what the fuck!
none of the above, although the records do come out on indie labels. The Durutti Column are basically one guy, Vini Reilly, although other musicians do play on his records

if you search for 'durutti' on this board, Alex in NYC's recent 'RFI: Durutti Column' thread is fairly high up the list. All the info you probably want is right there

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 30 September 2002 08:13 (twenty-three years ago)

vini's sound is out of this world. 'otis' is definitely one of my fave tracks, but you should check out a rooooly yummy double lp release on his belgian label, les disques du crepuscule, called 'fruit of the original sin'. from memory i think it has about three or four of his tracks - 'party' and 'experiment in fifth' should be in there somewhere - but it also has some ker-azy sounds from bands like marine, the names, dna, the swamp children, 323, paul haig.... aaaargh! *drools on keyboard*

three months pass...
i luv this song.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The only song to feature Tracy Chapman's voice (in the sample, "Another sleepless night for me", snipped from "Behind the Wall" from her first album) that I've ever been able to stomach.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

so hang on, does it sample both Otis and Tracy Chapman, or Tracy singing Otis?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Otis's voice is the "Come back, come back," I believe, from "Pain in My Heart."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Its a dreamy song.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 30 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
i just heard 'vini reilly' for the first time last night. man oh man!

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed!

purple patch (electricsound), Saturday, 24 July 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

thread revived because I saw part of a documentary on TV last night about the last 'golden age" of Hollywood, 1965-75, pre-blockbuster era, when studios were totally disorganized and took all kinds of chances, didn't care about marketing, sequels, movies were more character-driven, etc...and they used the Vini Reilly album as background music...awesome!...was hard to concentrate on the interviewees...anybody else see this?...(the doc looked like it was made around 1992 or so)...
