The Plump DJs

So last night I was in the Pod in Dublin to see these guys, they're a breakbeat group from Scotland. I'm familiar with their work to a point and I enjoyed them alot at Homelands UK. However last night was special, they played alot of their own tunes and just loads of really hard breakbeats with sounds and effects that seem so totally ambitious, totally wacky and insane in a "how the fuck did they get that noise" way and yet deadly serious and arresting at the same time. I can only presume last night was one of their most well recieved gigs ever, was talking to Andy afterwards and he looked visibly shocked, said it was the kind of show that reaffirms his faith in dance music (he didnt look e'd though).

Anyway it seems to me, on the basis of last nights performance that these guys are destined for greatness, I can't imagine them playing small venues for much longer with a sound that could fill stadiums, rushy, rhythmically perfect gurgling bass lines and those big breaks synth stabs. We all know the Chemical Brothers and how slick their sirens sounded when you first heard them, Plump DJs have this except it's not quite a siren, it's just a fucking crazy creation of their own, absolutely mind bending, and every tune has about 3 of these sort of new sounds that just blow you away.

Fantastic, only a matter of time until these guys are huuuuuuuuuge. Album in February, sadly. But loads of wicked singles out, and their Mixmag mix is pretty slick.

There's always A Plump Night Out, which is a mix of their own stuff and remixes they've done for other people. It's pretty good, but got eclipsed by that Stanton Warriors mix that came out about the same time. They did another mix which I never got round to getting, called urban something-or-other.

Mike (mratford), Sunday, 29 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I've heard the mixes, very impressive, the Stanton Warriors mix is way better than either Plumps one but the Plump's sound is more original and pretty insane. Andy Plump=incredibly nice man.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 29 September 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I stopped buying their records once I found out THEY ARE NOT PLUMP!

As far as the rest of the Finger Lickin' crew go, I'd check out the latest singles by Soul Of Man and the Drummatic Twins.

Ronan funny you mention them cos friday i bought the new play and they had this two page article about them and made the same comparison with early Chemical Bros

vic (vicc13), Sunday, 29 September 2002 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Urban Underground volume 2. It's a FANTASTIC little mix, way harder than the Stanton Sessions (which really was a fantastic album). But honestly the best thing they've ever done is probably their remix of Orbital's "Funny Break". GOLD, I tells ya.

If you like them, check out Koma & Bones; they're the same kind of breakbeat only a thousand times more intense. Their best stuff is their remixes, though.

The Plump DJ's deserved to be put on a pedestal and idolised forever simply for releasing a record called 'Big Groovy Fucker', and then have the decency to go ahead and MAKE it a big groovy fucker.

Sadly I think much of the rest of their material to date sounds like an inferior version of Big Groovy Fucker, but I still have high hopes for the album. I am now hoping it'll be entitled 'Lards of the Dance'.

I have a fab hour-long mp3 of plump DJs live at the Berlin Love parade - it's 2 years old now but still amazing...great beat hopes for the UK, along with Fingathing.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 30 September 2002 06:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Mm I've heard alot of Koma and Bones, quite liked "Morpheus", Plumps on Saturday were mind blowing though, I mean the songs would be at points where you're totally bowled over by every single sound, massive bass, really hard breakbeats, and then some fucking new sound just comes out of nowhere on top of it all, unholy stuff, really.

I don't care much about the CD, want to see them at Glastonbury though.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 12 June 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i have the cd. at first listen it didn't impress me at all. i'll give it a few more listens.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
So, is Eargasm worth buying? Is it continuously mixed?

Cheers!

paul c, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

not so sure about it personally, I'd go see them play but I find breaks increasingly hard to take at home.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

breaking my own rules i guess.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Have they become plump yet?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Ronan. I think I'll stick with the Zinc album, "Faster", to which I find myself increasingly attached. Has much living room appeal.

paul c, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

eargasm. is. alright. actually its very good. but its not earth shattering.

a plump night out methinks is a better record. they made the mistake a lot of dance acts do by trying to be 'mature' and make an statement with an 'album' as opposed to doing what there best at really nasty fun breakbeat. its not bad. but just tempers there sounds. and the slow tracks aren't great. its the rare dance act that can pull this trick (see leftfield).

gallantseagull, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree with gallantseagull.
after more listens to the album, i think the tracks work very well separately, but to listen to it in a row is a bit disappointing (and, mind you, frantic - not to listen to at work!).

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 24 November 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i first heard these kind of insane breaks about 2 summers ago at the fusion festival up in northern california by a local collective earphunk it blew my mind at 1:00am on a cloudless night flying out of my head.
Tracked down a number of tracks Morpheus by Koma & Bones, mixes by Tayo, Tipper, & the Fuel crew who do some of the nasitest breaks and bass stuff as well as some killer stuff by Andrea Parker

I always found Plump DJs to be on the more commercial side of the breaks scene.

One thing I agree with from above, I really found to difficult to transfer the feeling I identified with being in the club or in this case outdoors to listening to this stuff at home.

Similar to trance in that way

hector (hector), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

on a similar tip the free*land record (adam freelands) artist album is a real disappointment. Perhaps I'd heard the two killer dancefloor tracks for far to long before it was dropped but again its very nicely produced but lacking for want of a better word - a soul, personality even.

not bad. He also seems a tad embarressed of his djing. which is a shame as its great.

still i will see the liveact when it comes my way.

gallantseagull, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Jockey Slut had an AWFUL Free*land article where they had him as mock politician, stating his ten things to make the UK better. Christ it was terrible, "we should welcome foreign people, cos their women are better looking, and yeah legalise drugs". That's put me right off him, even though I thought We Want Your Soul was pretty good.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

we want your soul is good. but the rest of the rekid ain't up to it.
