Sigur Ros vs. Sugar Ray

sigur ros = crap, sugar ray = crap

that's pretty much how i feel about the sigur ros album as well.

"When It's Over" -- was that the one that sounded like some sort of Trash Can Sinatras / America hybrid? (Cause that was the one I liked best.)

sigur ros could never write anything as good as "fly."

another sugar ray plus: they don't have a "svefn-f-englar" video in 'em.

I am thoroughly disgusted at the sugar ray defense that's been sweeping ILM as of late.

I assure you I've been defending Sugar Ray since 97.

it's not so much defending Sugar Ray (i really like only a few of their songs -- otherwise, i don't really have much of an opinion about 'em one way or another, they were really just a generic late 90s kinda-OK sorta-alternative group) as it is that if someone had a gun to my head and forced me to choose b/w them and Sigur Ros, then "fly" would win out every time over "svefn-g-englar" or whatever.

the old "the simple pleasures of a simple pop song" vs. "the refined pleasures of a massive epic" debate all over again, in other words.

I jammed "floored" pretty regularly growing up :/

love hearing "fly", "every morning" while at the hardware store or whatever. the video for "fly" kind of warms my heart for some reason.
sugar ray's stuff with metal guitars is really bad, though.

i like the dark frosty stuff on the "alien fetus" sigur ros album. not at all into the whole heavy orchestra syrupy Sound of Music thing.

so i pick sugar ray, because i rarely hear a bad song of theirs in public. sigur ros's whole rep now is due to their andrew lloyd weber style that i abhor so greatly.

replace "andrew lloyd weber" with "orchestras and emotive cooing" there

Sugar Ray singles (never heard anything else tbh) were all really good by the standards of the era. Sigur Ros has bored me.

In 2000, Sugar Ray did a cover version of John Cale and Brian Eno's "Spinning Away" for the soundtrack to "The Beach".

It's surprisingly terrific, actually. McGrath nails the vocal.

And, yeah, The Beach soundtrack was essential for me in the pre-Napster days when all I wanted was the new New Order song, Orbital, and UNKLE.

McGrath is flourishing as a host for Extra or Entertainment Tonight these days, isn't he?

i doubt that Jonsi would be a good TV show host, at least not after Sigur Ros's infamous NPR interview.

iirc Mr. McGrath did not do poorly the time I watched his performance on "Celebrity Jeopardy."

you mean "rock n roll jeopardy?" i think it saw that one.. he was wayyy schooled, iirc, like he killed the competition.

mcgrath has def spent his career - I dunno if 'playing dumb' is the right way to put it, but...
