Nautical Almanac dude and pals in Baltimore want to start a flotation center and study altered consciousness stuff

sarahell, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 07:25 (twelve years ago)

If that was in my town I would put some dough in for sure - that's a noise direction I can approve for once.

what are bad and good noise directions?

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 2 January 2013 11:33 (twelve years ago)

New age floatation centre and library good. Braxton collab good (in principle). All others so far bad.

I have been liking Nick Millevoi a lot lately - work is sort of split between more noise-oriented guitar work and more avant/free-jazz guitar stuff.

ron of rrrecords looking for a home for his tape/CDR collection

I opened my shop on Jan 3, 1984 and in a few months it will be the 30th anniversary of RRRecords - I've been thinking of all the various ways I can celebrate this occasion, a huge reissue campaign, a 30xLP boxset, throw a big fest, perhaps resurrect Emil and tour the world, y'know, that sort of thing

but ultimately, I think I want to celebrate by donating my entire noise collection to a museum or university - I dont want to sound like I'm bragging or anything but I probably own the largest collection of noise and noise related activity in the USA, especially from the 80's and 90's - I'm sure its not complete but its extensive humungous

problem is, I dont know where to begin - my #1 fantasy is it ends up in the permanent collection of The Smithsonian or The Library of Congress - but more realistically, I'd be thrilled if it ended up in one of the big Boston universities, like Harvard or The Berkeley School Of Music - or possibly even someone like MOMA

this donation will consist of all my cassettes and CDr's as well as my ridiculously huge paper archive - none of my vinyl, I have other plans for my vinyl - whereas vinyl is a manufactured product involving a financial investment, the cassettes and CDr's are homemade, hand fabricated by the artists themselves - I dont have to explain the differences, do I?

so, I guess what I'm trying to say is I NEED YOUR HELP - I have no idea how to properly approach these institutions or if they would even care about a collection of this nature - if anyone reading this knows how to go about doing this the correct and proper way, if you work for any of these institutions or know someone who does, then please I'd love to hear your opinions on this matter

thanks

BEST - Ron

a hard dom is good to find (Edward III), Thursday, 17 October 2013 21:11 (eleven years ago)

i saw him post that and it is surely a trove of rad stuff but the whole "I have other plans for the vinyl" thing is weird- esp. since he's notorious for typically having 4 or 5 copies of many records in his collection- removing vinyl from the equation seems weird. But of course I am hopeful that some university will step up and archive this subculture because it's an important part of the global history of experimental artmaking in the last century

from John Olson

Q: "Is noise over?"

A: "Completely, 100 percent. That's part of why I'm quitting the label. All the categories, everything has run its course. The whole solo culture of it has invented a million people playing by themselves trying to be geniuses. You're getting a million one-way conversations."

John and I come from the same generation and are having similar reactions to the current milieu, it seems. I am also ending my label, ugEXPLODE, and am intending to limit my drumming performances from a flood to a trickle this coming year. Why? Because times change. I am older, poorer than ever and due to things like having a child, I simply don't have the freedom to do whatever I want anymore. I used to be able to commit to the most uncompromising shit possible 24/7 when I was young, dumb and full of shit. That era is over. It must be, for the sake of survival.

However, does that mean creativity is over? FUCK NO. Now I just realize I must choose my battles, or perish, cranking out more experimental ego-spew nobody wants to listen to or pay for seems completely quixotic in 2013. I've taken free drumming about as fucking far as anybody has pushed it and SO FUCKING WHAT. nobody gives a shit. i could play 5 gigs a week to nobody in new york, killing it completely in front of nobody and what do i get? nothing. fuck it.

i'm going to play guitar in rock bands and push that medium further than anybody else does. i did it on drums and i'm going to do it on guitar now. the format is not dead and i will prove it. tired motherfuckers, step to the side. here i come.

end of statement

flopson, Friday, 6 December 2013 02:41 (eleven years ago)

"how do they know if what they're playing is right or wrong?" "where are the melodies?"

flopson, Friday, 6 December 2013 02:41 (eleven years ago)

the thing is, it is such an amorphous genre -- you can have melodies in noise

sarahell, Friday, 6 December 2013 03:01 (eleven years ago)

I've taken free drumming about as fucking far as anybody has pushed it

Um...no he hasn't, not by the longest of longshots.
