Restrospective mixes (e.g. contemporary mixes of 90s jungle)

At least a couple of my favourite mixes are ones consisting of classic tunes from genres I'm ignorant of (probably they're much less attractive to experts, but it makes some sense that these could be good for the dilettante). I'm thinking of, for example, the Raime FACT mix:

http://www.factmag.com/2011/10/17/fact-mix-292-raime/

or the Black Dog Underground Resistance mix (or their Robert Hood mix, for that matter):

http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=123

or this very recent Untold FACT mix:

http://www.factmag.com/2012/12/31/fact-mix-363-untold/

Any other good examples of this kind of thing?

Chrissy Murderbot's My Year of Mixtapes probably fit the bill. Just go through the 2010 and 2009 entries.

have not listened to that yet but any mix that contains "gangster harstep," "lionheart," "step off," and "twitchy droid leg" looks pretty choice.

Pearsall has done a series of jungle mixes over the years, they've all been good to outstanding.

Josiah Alan, Friday, 4 January 2013 11:56 (twelve years ago)

Yet another FACT mix and on the hardcore end of the spectrum was 2 Bad Mice's one from 2011:
http://www.factmag.com/2011/05/23/fact-mix-2-bad-mice/

Neil S, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:09 (twelve years ago)

That Pearsall mix looks actually-really-good.

Though on the other hand I have to assume the primary market for this stuff is people who don't have DJ mixes from the era?

Tim F, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:12 (twelve years ago)

I would think so, and I definitely fall into that category.

I suspect there will also be lots of classic acid house mixes done recently as well. A favourite of mine from a few years ago was Justin Robertson's Art of Acid mix:
http://www.discogs.com/Justin-Robertson-The-Art-Of-Acid/release/1415843

Neil S, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:13 (twelve years ago)

Hardfloor's acid house X-Mix back in the day was great.

I've noticed a lot of jungle / d&b mixes of late and I mostly think it would be more useful to just disseminate the best out of print mixes of the era (though I'm not so into the whole let's listen to hissy poor quality rave tapes scene)

Tim F, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:16 (twelve years ago)

ooh that Hardfloor mix looks great.

I agree it would be good to have those old mixes available, but I don't think it's so bad to have current DJs putting out mixes of older stuff. After all many of the original DJs still make a living playing these tracks to nostalgic older ravers, DnB heads etc. I suppose if you take the Reynolds line that it's unhealthy cultural nostalgia you might disagree though (and of course the SR line is not the only way you might criticise this phenomenon)

Neil S, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:23 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I don't think it's unhealthy, more that there are a lot of really amazing mixes from Grooverider and the like who were, like, actually playing this music to crowds every night so they have a natural advantage on the selection/sequencing/mixing fronts.

Tim F, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

e.g. Grooverider's Hardstep Selection Volume 2, a/k/a best jungle mix ever:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/zg25sz

Tim F, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:42 (twelve years ago)

Really like this thread: raime mix is really good.

I mostly think it would be more useful to just disseminate the best out of print mixes of the era (though I'm not so into the whole let's listen to hissy poor quality rave tapes scene)

Happy to hear more on this, even if the quality isn't all that (hope it is good though). Nothing to do w/nostalgia, might be useful to compare what fitted in then and perhaps what doesn't now? Certainly not about an unhealthy cultural nostalgia and more about how people are viewing the past vs. what the past looked like? xp

xyzzzz__, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:44 (twelve years ago)

I don't really see much difference between the tunes chosen now and the tunes chosen then other than that newer mixes seem keen to avoid too-obvious classics by and large.

Tim F, Friday, 4 January 2013 12:45 (twelve years ago)

The Essential Mix archive might have some good examples of jungle/DnB mixes (along with loads of other generes)- but it looks like that comprehensive set of mixes that was put on the web not so long ago has been pulled down, sadly.

nine years pass...

I'm actually working on a series called "Class of '99", which is a House retrospective. The site is <a href="https://3x5.dj";>3x5.dj</a> and as of right now, I have two mixes up there (with many more to come).

The best way to follow the series is to <a href="https://3x5.dj/feed";>subscribe to it as a podcast</a>. It's also mirrored on <a href="https://soundcloud.com/3x5";>Soundcloud</a>, <a href="https://mixcloud.com/3x5";>Mixcloud</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCJhI4tK1CO;>Youtube</a>.

I don't know why there's no way to edit posts, but maybe a mod can delete the butchered one.
