Bee OK, Thursday, 3 January 2013 03:03 (twelve years ago)

14 year old me would have gone with Cameo and I can't argue with him all these years later.

would have definitely given some thought to "when i think of you" and "battery" if they'd been eligible too

There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

Sri Harold Klemp (crüt), Thursday, 3 January 2013 03:32 (twelve years ago)

"Levi Stubbs' Tears," followed by "E=MC²" and "Live to Tell." (Prefer "Open Your Heart" and "When I Think of You" to the Madonna/Janet singles there.)

clemenza, Thursday, 3 January 2013 05:51 (twelve years ago)

"Livin' on a Prayer" obv.

Holy shit, Gwen Guthrie

GIMME SOME REGGAE (DJP), Thursday, 3 January 2013 13:37 (twelve years ago)

Haven't thought about that song in YEARS

GIMME SOME REGGAE (DJP), Thursday, 3 January 2013 13:37 (twelve years ago)

I think the funniest thing I ever discovered about my record collection years after the fact, going back to the days when I just used to accumulate albums, was that I own four Gwen Guthrie LPs, and "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On but the Rent" isn't on any of them.

Larry Blackmon likes his eggs over hard, yolks broken.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 3 January 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

Jesus this is tough.

Prince and The Revolution - Kiss
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
The Smiths - Panic
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Some Candy Talking
Run-D.M.C. - It's Tricky
Pet Shop Boys - Suburbia
Janet Jackson - Nasty

And probably like 3 others I could have picked too. Man, I don't know!!

go to party leather (ENBB), Thursday, 3 January 2013 13:58 (twelve years ago)

Larry Blackmon is a dude who understands the importance of go to party leather

GIMME SOME REGGAE (DJP), Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:00 (twelve years ago)

I may actually vote for Guthrie.

go to party leather (ENBB), Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:08 (twelve years ago)

I totally missed "Panic" in there with the other two Smiths songs--that should have been my vote. I'm a non-fan who counts that as one of my favourite songs ever.

clemenza, Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:11 (twelve years ago)

No love for this year, or at least this lineup. Marshall Jefferson over "Live to Tell."

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer
Madonna - Papa Don't Preach
R.E.M. - Fall on Me
Billy Bragg - Levi Stubbs' Tears
Big Black - Kerosene
Gwen Guthrie - Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al
The Human League - Human

voted Gwen

g simmel, Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

Voted You Can Call Me All. It's perhaps the first song I remember hearing (along with Homeless), from the year of my birth. What a great year, apart from Chernobyl, Challenger, Palme, etc.

Frederik B, Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:44 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, The Mission sucked.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Thursday, 3 January 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)

Almost went Bang Zoom, ended up going e=mc2

Mark G, Thursday, 3 January 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

I can't vote in this, it's just impossible to decide.

Angel of Death

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 3 January 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)

Much to my surprise, their 1986 moment just didn't last.

Oh crap, I didn't notice Slayer on there.

"Fall On Me" by a nose from "Live To Tell" (Madge's best ever song imo).

Kiss vs Dont Dream Its Over vs Live to Tell (vs Kerosene vs There is a Light etc)

x-gau, uncut gau, The Bomb! (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 3 January 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)

One of these: "Word Up", "Graceland", or "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out".

o. nate, Thursday, 3 January 2013 19:32 (twelve years ago)

1986 me would pick XTC, but 2013 me feels PiL is the one song that still resonates and kicks all sorts of ass. Anger is an energy!!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 4 January 2013 00:26 (twelve years ago)

I went for Levi Stubb's Tears, lyrically that song just can't be beaten. New Order and XTC would be very close behind. Word up by Cameo is up there too, if it had been Candy I would have gone for that.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 4 January 2013 07:17 (twelve years ago)

also voted "Levi Stubb's Tears". I've been on a youtube Billy Bragg search since. I just heard a really nice Kirsty MacColl and Billy Bragg duet (BBC?) version of "New England"

Cameo, REM, PiL, Prince, and Crowded House were my other possibilities. In these polls, I always vote based upon how they felt to me at the time (did I buy the album or single), combined with immediate "yep" reaction.

Zachary Taylor, Friday, 4 January 2013 07:25 (twelve years ago)

3 164 Prince and The Revolution - Kiss
7 593 Cameo - Word Up!
21 1433 Janet Jackson - Nasty
31 1942 Run-D.M.C. - My Adidas
18 1309 Beastie Boys - Paul Revere
30 1852 Boogie Down Productions - South Bronx
37 2333 Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al
32 1989 Bangles - Manic Monday
34 2212 Run-D.M.C. - It's Tricky
39 2428 The Human League - Human

"When I Think of You" would have gotten my vote, "Peter Piper" and "Eric B. Is President" would have made my list

hemioblock (The Reverend), Saturday, 5 January 2013 00:48 (twelve years ago)

basically kiss vs don't dream it's over vs you can call me al, and i'm stuck

#guy #guy fieri #poop #hallway (zachlyon), Saturday, 5 January 2013 02:08 (twelve years ago)

Hearing "Don't Dream It's Over" on the drive home tonight shattered me like the first time I heard it at 18, so I may eventually vote for it.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 January 2013 02:15 (twelve years ago)

lots o tracks loved here but an easy vote for me, had to go for bizarre love triangle

H in Addis, Saturday, 5 January 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

Hate seeing fucking New Order doing well in these polls.

Albert Crampus (NickB), Saturday, 5 January 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

but voted Bizarre Love Triangle anyway

Albert Crampus (NickB), Saturday, 5 January 2013 15:02 (twelve years ago)

i was going on here to listen to the Spotify playlist and there isn't one :-(

Bee OK, Sunday, 6 January 2013 01:26 (twelve years ago)

Went with 'Suburbia', but could have easily been 'Fall On Me' or 'Bizarre Love Triangle'. 'Dear God' is known as the big XTC track in America (kinda like how 'Senses Working Overtime' or 'Making Plans For Nigel' are the big XTC songs here in the UK), and while I'm glad the song exists and it's a notable moment in XTC's career, it's never been one of my absolute favourites of theirs.

I was 10 and had my first radio/tape-recorder so love this period. It was probably a couple of years before I discovered house, but these days it has to be Marshall Jefferson for me.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 7 January 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)

damn. can't decide! prince, slayer, beasties, paul simon, peter gabriel, big black, the smiths. all great records! between raining blood & kiss I think

mconor, Monday, 7 January 2013 01:40 (twelve years ago)

went for "Bizarre Love Triangle" though i really wanted to vote XTC but isn't better.

Bee OK, Monday, 7 January 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)

Ditto. Also, "Rise" was, unbeknownst to me at the time, my first exposure to Tony Williams.

But not voting for "Kiss" in a poll with "Kiss" feels wrong, so "Kiss."
