Here is where you list the mix CDs you want (be as general or as specific as you like) and if anybody reading it is feeling kind they might promise you one.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

matos, you have one don't you? (HINT HINT SEND IT TO ME PLEASE I'LL SEND YOU SOME KWAITO OR SOMETHING)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Of interest for Andrew L and Tom E: RADIO 1 GETS HIP TO THE ASIAN UNDERGROUND

A new weekly Radio One show is to cover the UK Asian urban sound. Bobby Friction and Nihal will play on Friday’s between 3-5am, starting October 18. They will lay down bhangra, bollywood, drum ‘n’ bass and hip-hop.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah Kwaito.

And microhouse!

2 requests for a Bollywood mix = we have a project!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

tom, i'll swap ya a microhouse for a bollywood.

i'd also like a kwaito mix.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Inspired by Julio's excellent request (me too!).....

loads - but I can't burn CD's for anyone in return either. Is anyone willing to send me any mix CDs in return for minidiscs or (gasp) C90's?

I want I want I want:
- a mix of this 'microhouse' stuff (which seems to have become the sole definition of 'electronic music' for some reason)
- a mix of whatever the ILM informed experts think 'electroclash' is
- a mix of 'Progressive (think that's what it's called) House' - have disliked LOADS of dance music from mid-late 80's onwards, but last year heard/liked/bought some 'Global Underground' CD by 'John Digweed' - read a description of ProgHouse by S Reynolds and it sounded like he might be that....
- a compilation of Momus stuff: never heard him (or of him, until ILM)
- a beginner's guide to non-squealy & non-histrionic 'jazz' (I've been put off by all that stuff)
- a mix of the arabic/whatever music it is that DeRayMi says he likes
- a Stereolab compilation (have only heard 1 or 2 songs)
- a mix of Japanese easy listening/pop/thingy music - Pizzicato 5 I s'pose, but is there other less 'knowing' stuff (whatever that is)
- a mix of other bands mentioned around here I've never heard: Montgolfier Brothers, Interpol, Low, Lambchop....

I'd have chased these down myself but I don't have downloading/MP3/blahblah facilities - and by the time I can afford 'em, the music industry will probably have stamped them out......

Ray M (rdmanston), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom I made you a microhouse compilation ages ago and never sent it, but I'm gonna do it over and send it this time hopefully, if i can ever get motivated.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

the internet is crap for researching kwaito and the local radio dj's hardly ever say the name of the tracks, and i'm so strapped for $ lately that i end up just purchasing or previewing the shiny intl stuff i'm used to, i'm so bad at taking risks on purchases

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

which is a roundabout way of saying that you're going to have to wait quite a while before getting your mix

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

jess: download Lady Dana "Ladies First" no matter what - with tracks like these a major revival can't be far away...

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Ray - I'll do you a Stereolab mix. I can probably come up with a not bad electroclash tape as well. I'll try e-mailing tou shortly.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Thankyou Jeff - we'll sort out whether I have any stuff you might be interested in!

Ray M (rdmanston), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I want some j-pop.

and a CD of Avril, Shakira, Britney, Vanessa, Christina Milian, Michelle Branch and all that!

I could make Starry a rock CD, but I don't think I could keep in with the 1993 limit.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 30 September 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Mix of local 70's punk/ proto-punk. From any medium-size or small city. I can trade (lots of stuff) but specifically, local Akron/Clone 70s punk...

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 30 September 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I concur with dave225
Your local bands, especially anything thats either completely alien or something that reminds me of Dave Kendall-era 120 Minutes. (Like, back when indie/alt didn't succcckkk.)

Lord Custos Alpha (Lord Custos Alpha), Monday, 30 September 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i dunno perhaps A BOOTLEGS MIX FROM TOM

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 30 September 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

it's my birthday on Saturday. Can someone be so kind as to send me a Wetherall reggae/dub mix? I'll send ye something what I done in return.

dog latin, Monday, 30 September 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Jel it's Thai pop you want, that J-pop is way overrated by comparison - if you want a mix of Thai stuff let's trade something!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, I'll take all of these, and I'm willing to trade, but I'm slack as hell PLUS super-busy, so instead of trying to get something from me, and stressing yourself in doing so, you all should just mail me mixes because I'm nice, mmmkay?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yeah poopchutes, where's my fucking cds?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

*Masters of Handbag!

*Compilation of bands in the Budgie, Sir Lord Baltimore vein from Duane.

*Best of Brit/Euro chart stuff from the last 5 years that never made it to America

I can make a compilation of 60s British or French Girl Group/Singer obscurities if anyone's interested.

And Sarah, I could definitely make you a ROCK cd, let me know. Al, I'd be happy to make you a cd of power pop that doesn't suck. But first tell me what you consider sucky power pop, so I can steer clear of that sort of thing.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 30 September 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Arthur - Shazam? Myracle Brah? Ie Rainbow Quartz label != sucky power pop. (Neither does My Sharona!!!!!!!!11)

david h (david h), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd really like a UK Garage comp (ie other than So Solid and the Streets) and one of Ronan-endorsed dance.

david h (david h), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I could do alt.country, if anyone is interested, but it'd have to be a mini-disc or C90.

david h (david h), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, david h, I'm not so up on Nu Power Pop, sadly. Except for a bit of the Shazam. And the Blondes and the 21st Century Girls.

And I'd really love a UK Garage mix cd also.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

arthur, i could do you the "masters of handbag" and garage mixes; email me exactly what yr looking for.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm into the thai pop, darnielle. what could I make for you in return?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 30 September 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

apart from Flamenco, I'd like some bossa nova. I'll do a free jazz/improv with some jap psych if you like.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

HOI HARVELL!!! I shouted for Garage first. : )

david h (david h), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, but you live across the great big water thing (and 2900 miles of us), and arthur lives 2 states below me!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i'll never get any cds with that kind of logic, jess

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd love any of these mixes. I'd like a noise mix, especially. Unfortunately, I have a major deficiency of any genre-specific expertise.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Monday, 30 September 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

A mix of (reggae-based) dub would be nice.
A mix of lesser known 70's salsa artists.
Something unexpected from Indonesia. (The increased interst in Qur'anic recitation over the last few decades should give birth to some new song forms, or so I am hoping.)
Smooth improv.
Flamenco guitar.
Italian intrumental progressive (a la Sensations Fix).

I don't have the technical means to reciprocate at the moment, so don't bother unless you are altruistic.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 30 September 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

i want international metal from awsoma powa, john darnelle and siegbran

chaki (chaki), Monday, 30 September 2002 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz - I don't have a sense of what you're into - but really I'm happiest when people just make mixes that they like - write me and we'll set this up

I totally LOVE this thread

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, I'm into most anything I don't already have, whatever that is. I can definitely make some neo-gaze comps or something. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

A mix CD of Girls in the Garage stuff and anything that sounds like Dolly Mixture

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i want a mix cd of 80s hair metal, with everything from cinderella to motley crue to poison (but no def leppard, i already have hysteria).

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like a CD of THE CATCHIEST SONGS IN THE WORLD (that maybe just didn't catch somehow)

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I could make a hair metal CD! But I only have Poison and Cinderella and Bon Jovi and Skid Row. I've got Warrant, Winger, LA Guns and Motley Crue on tape though.

John, a thai Cd would be cool, but I could only trade a mix CD of verious things!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Mix CD of Reggae (which is actually waiting for me at my friend's place)

Mix CD of dance hall (which I may buy tomorrow along with TOK, Lady Saw and that All Saints Best Of).

A Non Caucasian Hip Hop Mix CD by Simon Strife. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, that's a tough one!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

j0hn, if yr not overwhelmed by people clamoring for thai pop, er . . . can I join the throng? I can barter wtih NZ popdub/hip-pop/r&j/whatever. also :

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh Dr. C beat me to it.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the first of the month, so I'll be giving away another batch of CDRs on ILE at some point today. I haven't decided which ones yet.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

brg30 I have some things which might be 'Sound Poetry' - I'll mail you for/with further details.....

????

sF, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i want international metal from awsoma powa, john darnelle and siegbran

Non English Speaking Nasty Death/Black Metal

I made a mix CD of Norse black metal a few months ago containing only bands with Norwegian lyrics, ranging from (relatively) mellow stuff to the very harsh/noisy side of it. If anyone's interested, email me. Also for other less or more strictly themed post-1985 metal mix CDs, or trance, or techno, or electroclash, or uk garridge...

I'd be happy with any mix cd in return. Like John said, preferrably music you like rather than stuff you'd think I like. Although I would be interested in:
- a best of World Serpent-related music
- a best of Krautrock

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

can do:

microhouse
uk garage
"lost generation"
hardcore/jungle - all periods

want:

post-punk
early-to-mid nineties hip hop
American post-rock/drone stuff
post-Bellevue detroit techno
eighties "extended mixes"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

BelleVILLE, Tim!

[Also Tim, I will be contacting you shortly etc.]

Andy Van Buren (Andy K), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

brg30 I have some things which might be 'Sound Poetry' - I'll mail you for/with further details.....

All right!!

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim - I might have enough 80's 12" 'extended mix' singles to make up a compilation - I'll check later this week.
I'll mail you a list, in case you've got most of them already.

Ray M (rdmanston), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's an idea I had. When a genre mix has been made, it gets given a name and the tracklisting gets put up on an ILX-affiliated site somewhere, along with the names of people who have it and how many copies they are currently willing to make for other ILX regulars - that way a 'library' of educational volumes can build up...

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

sF: that compilation is called "topless women talk about their lives", its a movie soundtrack and features the most done-to-death tracks of the flying nun wunderyears. if you are after nz punk meant in the strictest sense you should get AK79, a compilation which is on flying nun. the best nz punk band was imho the gordons, if you see anything by them GET IT! i could make you a mixtape of new zealand indie music if you wanted but it probably won't have any three-chord-rahrah punk on it, but def DIY magic!

jel check your e-mail!

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Want: uk garage (ha, like everyone else above me), I've heard very little of it. Ned, I doubt that I have anything that you don't, but I'd love a neo-gaze mix.

Can make: err, I probably have a pretty M.O.ILM R. cd collection, but I'll see what I can do. I can only make cds, as I have no tape deck w/ a record button. :-(

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

i can make a mixtape of 80s chartpop classics. any takers?

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

tom that's a very good idea indeed.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

haha also, in the interest of fairness and curiosity, i would like a mix of UNDIE RAP CLASSICS from the early 90s onward. (the less solesides/co flow related stuff the better.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon Tom's idea is great, especially if said page notes whether the tape is just one track after another or with beatmatching or other fancy mixing (i.e. whether you can have pretty much the same thing yourself if you own/download/borrow the tracks in question or not).

And I would be very interested in a neo-gaze cd but the chances of me owning anything Ned Five Billion CDs Raggett doesn't is surely nil. Also I am lazy, have no specialist genre knowledge, have a despicably rockist/indie-schmindie collection, and am generally not very good at making such things, so I'd probably better sit out, or I'd never get round to it. All the more reason why I think that webpage would be a fantastic thing...

Rebecca (reb), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

like everyone else i guess, i'd be curious for any sort of mix involving the prefixes micro or electro, since the only thing i know about that stuff is what i get from gabba.net... in return, somewhere around here i've got a cd crammed with a 1000+ old-style(i.e. pre-1975, quasi-classical) bollywood mp3's, so maybe i could add a subset of that to the pile if i can figure out how to access a burner.

dave k, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I would love to hear mix CDs devoted to Bollywood, nerf metal, The New Sensitive Pop Gurls w/ Guitars (Michelle Branch et al.), New Zealand jangle, contemporary 'evil' metal, j-pop/k-pop, instrumental soundtracks, distillations of obscure Nuggets/Pebbles-like comp. series, plus ANY CD compilation covering ANY dance music from the last five years -- I always wind up falling in love with something or other, but I can never keep up.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I always wind up falling in love with something or other, but I can never keep up.

About my feeling. This is why all music production everywhere should cease, ILM should shut down, and ten years shall be dedicated for me to quietly catch up to everything again. At that point I shall be content, and normal service can resume on all fronts. Rah! :-)

the chances of me owning anything Ned Five Billion CDs Raggett doesn't is surely nil

I should note that I have the Raggettstacks precisely because in part people recommend things to me that I do not in fact already have. Thus there is growth and joy. :-)

I suppose I could do post-punk and NZ jangle and all that, and more besides. See, I don't really know WHAT all I have in genre terms, I just know I have these sounds. Some are harsher than others.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I want Alex NYC to make me a Stranglers mix. My old boss borrowed my comp and never returned it :(

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 01:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i have finished arthur's garage mix tonight (two cds!!), so if anyone else (in the continental u.s.) wants one, email me, sucka.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray for Jess! I'm working on the 70s soul one, should have it done by the weekend. Send me your address.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Senor Tim Finney - I can probably accomodate yr request for the post-punk. I will contact you offchannel for further specifications. Tomorrow. I'm sleepy. Feel free to initiate contact, of course.

And, yes, said request will be honored AFTER I mail Jess' CDs, of course. Of course.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 04:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike D I could do you a pretty beautiful tape of this years best stuff if you're into it? I need a cassette playing CD player but I've been dying to make a tape for someone, haha!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:27 (twenty-three years ago)

''Sound Poetry''

brg I have a sound poetry box set. it's great stuff. I could tape some of it. what have you got?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom, start a thread for your idea to flesh it out and I'll think about it. It doesn't sound like more than a v.simple database.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh hang on you already have)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 10:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I can also do a mix of electro for dave k, tapes only though sadly.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

my heart's desire is to have a recording of the pf's talk on b, but barring that, a recording of the clientele, the pines or would be goods from the black & white ball would do.

youn, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

*I would really love a "beginner's" compilation of Japanese psychedelia (Acid Mothers Temple, Fushitsusha and associated artists) Ebay seems to be my only option, and I'd rather not blow that kind of money when I don't even know where to begin.

In return I can offer a VAST selection of unofficial Prince material; outtakes, live material, or a combination of the two.

Anybody?

Possum Slimm (Possumslimm), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

cd-rs are a grebt place to start, but wouldn't it also make sense to start sharing and distributing these via soulseek?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I would really love a "beginner's" compilation of Japanese psychedelia

The recent comp on Earworm is an excellent starter..

Graham thanks for the offer - fingers crossed I'll be able from this afternoon to pay more than fleeting attention to interweb commitments so I'll try and get an email to you. It will be simple yes but any database is too much for my poor brain.

I would really love a CD of anything great that's recently been recorded in the name of hiphop. I feel a bit out of the loop missing recent releases from J-Live, Common, Cannibal Ox, and any of the Wu Tang solo stuff that's any good these days. Or anything like this.

In return, I can offer a variety of things, so try me.

I wouldn't mind a Soca mix. Or a Tom's Top Ten. Or tech-house, Kwaito, etc.

I'm willing to make a corresponding barter-mix.

And Bollywood, Bhangra or Bhangra tinged Garage (like Punjabi Hit Squad).
