2012 ILM SUPER-MEGA YEAR-END ALBUMS 'N' TRACKS POLL™ VOTING THREAD (LAST 24 HOURS OF VOTING)

Message Bookmarked

People of ILX, the time has come (again)! Please cast your considered vote for the best tracks and albums of 2012 via the form linked below:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHJERkE5T3NTTDM1WnM5NXhHQWFkd2c6MQ

The voting procedure is the same as last year. You can vote for up to 25 albums and up to 25 tracks, one item per line in the appropriate box. Please copy each line directly from the nominations lists (linked below); do not number your ballot. You can choose one of three ballot types, which determine how points are allocated to each item you vote for:

(1) Weighted: The first item on your ballot receives 50 points, the second receives 48 points, and so on, until the 25th item receives 2 points.
(2) Unweighted: Each item on your ballot receives 26 points.
(3) Mixed: To submit a mixed ballot, you must divide your ballot in two with an extra blank line. The upper portion of the ballot will be treated as weighted, with the first item receiving 50 points, and so on. The lower portion will be treated as unweighted, in that all items will receive the same number of points. The score allocated to items in the unweighted portion is calculated as 26 minus the number of items in the weighted portion (this is so that any weighted, unweighted or mixed ballot consisting of 25 items will allocate a total of exactly 650 points).

THE BALLOTS ARE HERE! THE BALLOTS ARE HERE!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 January 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)

After massaging the nominations list a bit there are now 813 nominated albums and 1183 nominated tracks.

exciting :) now i must sift through all the songs i like and put them in order :(

Miguel seriously testing my one track per artist limit. ;_;

Roz, Monday, 7 January 2013 07:00 (twelve years ago)

Why is: Donnie & Joe Emerson - Good Time in the noms? That one is from 1979 or so.

Moka, Monday, 7 January 2013 07:46 (twelve years ago)

spotify caution: i'd hazard a guess that a good half of the nominees won't be on it...

lex pretend, Monday, 7 January 2013 08:32 (twelve years ago)

@Moka: We're lenient on things that nobody heard first time round, "year of impact" etc. If you don't feel they're appropriate, don't vote for them (I tend not to).

Vote in the ILM End of Year Poll! (seandalai), Monday, 7 January 2013 11:15 (twelve years ago)

Looks like about 70% of nominated tracks are on Spotify. If there's something that's not there and you're afraid might get ignored, post a Youtube or w/e on the campaigning thread.

Vote in the ILM End of Year Poll! (seandalai), Monday, 7 January 2013 11:17 (twelve years ago)

My ballots might take a minute. On the whole, there was less I liked as much in 2012 as I liked in 2011, but perhaps there was a broader swath of music I enjoyed? Harder to cull when that's the case.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 January 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)

Thanks for warning us about Spotify, lex. I was under the impression it had every piece of music ever recorded.

Spotify Limitation Awareness Campaigner of the Year.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 7 January 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

I assume it's OK to copy data to the ballot from the original googledocs spreadsheets* rather than the text files? dropbox.com is blocked at work for me

*though I think the albums spreadsheet hasn't yet caught up with all of seandalai's massaging(?). Not that I haven't got enough choice as it is ;)

Jeff W, Monday, 7 January 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

It should be fine. There are only a couple of extra things on the Dropbox version, almost all of which are listed at the tail end of the nominations thread.

me too!

Z S, Monday, 7 January 2013 19:26 (twelve years ago)

Getting my ballots together I noticed some duplications. Might not be a problem, but I'll mention them anyway:
Donald Fagen - I'm Not the Same Without You is in there twice, as is:
Omar-S & Ob Ignitt - Wayne County Hill Cops
Omar-S & Ob Ignitt - Wayne Hill County Cops

In the album list the Lopatin/Hecker collab is in there twice.

willem, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:22 (twelve years ago)

I have 22 nominations left and about 25 tracks I'm thinking of nominating. Figure I'll just wait to see if others take care of a few for me first.

― jaymc, Friday, January 4, 2013 9:19 AM (3 days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

D'oh, I forgot to send these final nominations! And it looks like three of them *were* taken care of, too, so it would've been easy. Here are the 22 I'd have nominated if I hadn't spaced:

Bat for Lashes - All Your Gold
Beck and Philip Glass - NYC: 73-78
Best Coast - The Only Place
Blondes - Pleasure
The Chap - What Did We Do
Curren$y ft. Wale - What It Look Like
Dr. John - Ice Age
Four Tet - Locked
Grouplove - Tongue Tied
Gym Class Heroes - Ass Back Home
JLS - Hottest Girl in the World
Kelly Clarkson ft. Vince Gill - Don't Rush
Kendrick Lamar ft. Drake - Poetic Justice
Metric - The Void
Norah Jones - Happy Pills
Sharon Van Etten - Serpents
The Shins - Simple Song
Silversun Pickups - Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)
Skyzoo - Range Rover Rhythm
Vijay Iyer Trio - Human Nature (Trio Extension)
Wild Nothing - Disappear Always
The xx - Chained

Probably only *really* care about a half-dozen of them, though.

jaymc, Monday, 7 January 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

@willem: thanks! Identical duplicates don't throw the system but the "county hill"/"hill county" one might have caused an unnoticed screw-up.

otoh This track I'd never listened to before by Autre Ne Veut is making my ears really happy right now.

I'd recommend going through the Spotify list either filtering by Artist or Time.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 January 2013 22:12 (twelve years ago)

I am boggling at the fact that there is an Asia song on here

Solange Knowles is my hero (DJP), Monday, 7 January 2013 22:12 (twelve years ago)

why are a whole bunch of my track nominations not in the list?

hex reducing nipple (electricsound), Monday, 7 January 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

seandalai hates you.

j/k I dunno, but I'm sure he'll fix it.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 January 2013 22:27 (twelve years ago)

whoops, i said "singles" instead of "tracks" so that probably didn't help

these were my track noms, if they could be added that would rule as i have nothing to vote for otherwise

fear of men - mosaic
paws - sore tummy
by the sea - eveline
savoir adore - dreamers
beat connection - further out
mining boom - pda
nun - solvents
the presets - promises
the history of apple pie - do it wrong
the tenfivesixty - do this for me
sulk - flowers
shrag - devastating bones
bleeding rainbow - waking dream

hex reducing nipple (electricsound), Monday, 7 January 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)

Instead of figuring this out myself, I'll be lazy and just ask: if I'm voting for 15 songs and no albums, do I just start at 50, 48, etc., until I stop at 22 points? Or should I adjust somehow for the truncated ballot?

clemenza, Monday, 7 January 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)

xp Argh I thought I'd fixed that blunder but sure I'll add them.

Vote in the ILM End of Year Poll! (seandalai), Monday, 7 January 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)

@clemenza: just list your top 15 tracks in order and I'll assign the points. As you say it will be 50,48,...,22.

@electricsound: Your noms are already on the list. Are you reading from the link at the top of the thread?

Vote in the ILM End of Year Poll! (seandalai), Monday, 7 January 2013 22:41 (twelve years ago)

o shit. that means i forgot to nominate something important, i am fool. thanks for checking!

hex reducing nipple (electricsound), Monday, 7 January 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)

Wait, wtf, 'Cleaning Out My Closet' wasn't nominated? Fuck.

emil.y, Monday, 7 January 2013 22:52 (twelve years ago)

I realise that this is highly out of order, but that track was going straight to my top 5 of the year, so please can I do a beg of ye, seandalai, to add Angel Haze - Cleaning Out My Closet to the list? Please please please? It's my own bloody fault, but I just assumed that the goons would take care of it.

emil.y, Monday, 7 January 2013 22:55 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, it's ok.

Albums results look pretty great, imo.

yeah i should have done this, it's certainly in my top 25 of 2012. dunno how i overlooked it when nominating. i nominated albums i didn't even end up voting for !!!! :@

monotony, Sunday, 20 January 2013 08:13 (twelve years ago)

Re the deep cuts on popular albums thing, I agree it's a bit pointless voting for these if you're gonna vote for the album too. But this year there were a few such records that I genuinely thought were patchy so didn't want to vote for. The CRJ album is one - or at least the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition were generally the best ones, not counting "Call Me Maybe". I don't see a problem in nominating and voting for bonus tracks, especially if that draws ppl's attention to songs they may not have heard.

Jeff W, Sunday, 20 January 2013 14:33 (twelve years ago)

Sorry if this has been mentioned upthread, but have you guys decided on when to roll out the results?

Roz, Sunday, 20 January 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

Monday 1/21, I think?

Not that it would have mattered, but I missed one of my favorites (that I nominated!) when I was voting. I'm sorry, Sylvester Anfang II.

Oh well. Fortunately, me forgetting to vote for it isn't going to stop it from being super awesome. I neglected to nominate some other stuff, but it really wouldn't have mattered anyway and it's not like the album is going to evaporate. It's still there. I listened to it yesterday!

this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Sunday, 20 January 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

quick survey

usually we do this over 4 days, with 17 today, then 20 over the next 3 days

or we could do it over 5 days, with 17 today and 15 over the next 4 days

is there an overwhelming feeling either way?

Will miss, if rich kidz places today just pretend I posted "FLEX!" afterwards.

Selfishly it works better for me to do it over 5 days BUT I think it works better for the poll to do it over 4 tbh. Let tradition continue.
