The Pines: Classic Or Classic?

The weekend just gone's Chickfactor Black & White Ball in London's Bush Hall yielded great sets from Camera Obscura & The Clientele but for me the highlight was The Pines' all too brief half hour: a perfect performance from Pam & The Pinefox ranged through the whole Pines history, from Baby, You'll Do to MGM, with a flawless rendition of the technically demanding I See Stars leaving me moved to an extent that would have been embarrassing if the room wasn't so dark. They responded to the challenge of (I guess) their most demanding gig so far with (I guess) their best ever perfromance.

How was it for you?

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 30 September 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I always mistype performance. Nowadays all my 'the's are 'teh's' too.

Teh!

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 30 September 2002 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Surprisgly enough, I thought they were great.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 30 September 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought The Montgolfier Brothers were great an' all. If Tony Wilson, around the time of "Missing Boy", had directed Vini Reilly to a voice coach instead of simply telling him to shut up and, oh, there's these Scottish chaps called The Blue Nile you should work with too...

Actually, everyone was good. It was all good. The weather, the glorious venue, the sound, the banter, the spectacularly glamorous audience, the Ryder Cup, the lift to Central London from the Most Handsome Man in Pop...

Haha on the bus home I asked the PF which film star he was on about in MGM - I asked if it was ALIEN, he said yes if you want it to be and I say well why not. I like the Pines! But they did not play Dieppe, which is my favourite song. Chiz chiz.

The PF also told a french bloke that I talk in computer langwidge.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 30 September 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I do that right did I did I??

Sarah (starry), Monday, 30 September 2002 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad I didn't know about this, otherwise I might have had to sulk about missing it. I've been doing a lot of work lately about black and white colobus monkeys, so I wouldn't even have had trouble trying to think of my fancy dress outfit.

PJ MIller (PJ Miller), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Proconsul to thread

the pinefox, Monday, 30 September 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Most Handsome Man in Pop = ?

Haha on the bus home I asked the PF which film star he was on about in MGM - I asked if it was ALIEN, he said yes if you want it to be and I say well why not for me = Charles Laughton

Macauque-o (Mooro), Monday, 30 September 2002 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Itwas grebt, afterneverbeing the mostavid fan, I arrived slightly late and thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so I might have to pester a man I know for a mini-disc of previous works.

chris (chris), Monday, 30 September 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Pam Berry is the most gorgeous woman in pop. Hopefully one day she might sing on one of my records... a boy can dream.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 30 September 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

So, I've only ever heard the song on that Red Square comp. but duuuuuuuuuD.

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

could someone please write about the sets by the clientele and would be goods? did someone record these performances? what was the set list for the pines?

youn, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Almost too topical for words, but it would appear there is/was a Proconsul Major. The mind boggles, etc.

Did The Pines do a 20 minute speaker-shredding free-form freak-out version of 'Lincoln Cathedral'?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 07:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Youn, I don't have a Pines setlist (although someone on this thread does). My normal aid to memory for songs performed is sadly not available, being in a paused condition.

All performances (barring Future Bible Heroes*) were recorded for a Spanish radio station.

When time permits I am sure there will be Clientele reports on Lacewings.

Peter, no 'Lincoln Cathedral'. Not actually a Pines track, I gather, but a Pinefox solo.

*There's a thought.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 08:16 (twenty-three years ago)

What Spanish radio station, etc.? Pam could have done some performance art while Reynard riffed into infinity. There aren't enough 'ideas men' left in rock, I ought to set up a consultancy.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Youn, I don't have a Pines setlist (although someone on this thread does).

I hope you don't mean me - I was far too jittery to register song-order. Something like: Seven Clubs, Milk Bar, Baby You'll Do, MGM, I See Stars, Please Don't Get Married, Chalet. Maybe there was another song, I can't remember. Knotty stomach affects memory.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Seven Clubs, Milky Bar... there was a pattern developing there for a while.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

No Mike, I didn't mean you. The setlist was shoved into the PF's back pocket at the end of the show. I can't remember if there was a song in addition to the ones you mentioned: my brain is saying Kisses And Fog but that is perhaps because the CF compilation CD
was being played between sets.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

No 'Your Last Polo' though.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Also omitted: 'Chocolate Snow' (hazelnut remix)

(Jones' 7 = OTM)

the pinefox, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Peter is onto something here. Doesn't one confectionery manufacturer market chocolate Stars? Plus, a handwritten MGM could look like M&M.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

More alarmingly, isn't it MGM who have a LION ROARING at the beginning of their films? It's only a short step from there to the LION BAR advert where someone breaks open the lion bar and it APPEARS TO ROAR in a lion-like manner.

plus! PLEASE DON'T GET MARINATED

Pity it wasn't a longer set really.

george gosset (gegoss), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this a legal question, George?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

For nonperishable goods bought of Moses Herzog, of 13 Saint Kevin's parade, Wood quay ward, merchant, hereinafter called the vendor, and sold and delivered to Michael E. Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

just being nosey, but thanks, it's interesting to read assignments like that

george gosset (gegoss), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The Pines: extant since the mid-90s as an idea of Pam's, since late '98 in their current form, since May '99 as a live act, since spring 2000 as a recorded entity. Named after a wood-panelled basement in a Mt Pleasant (DC) row-house which was, presumably, named after something else it resembled.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Just in case The Pines do have to change their name for legal reasons, may I suggest The Proconsuls?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you for the track listing. i knew steady mike was called that for a reason.

youn, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to have missed another Pines discussion.

For Youn though,

Clientele: proficient but dull.

Would-Be-Goods: annoying but sometimes entertaining.

Someone, somewhere, has to mention the magistery of Pipas. It may as well be me, here.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 7 October 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I thought the Would-Be-Goods set was fantastic, a highlight, as was the the Montgolfier Brothers, and the Clientele! In fact, the best WBG show I'd seen from them yet, and the best MG show yet. The Clientele wasn't the best yet I'd seen them, but for them a highly above average show which Louis Phillipe said was amazing compared to a year before. Ally C's Clientele backlash started well over 2 years ago anyway, Youn!

The show stealer was the Pines though, if not because they played the best set, but because the majority of the crowd hadn't realized their brilliance until that day! I predict sell out Pines shows from now on out.

doubledough, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

What Spanish radio station, etc.?

Thanks to my clever & kind mate Aitor, some details of cf b&w ball broadcasts:

"going to broadcast it (not the whole thing, though) this Sunday and (I believe) the next Sunday too (2nd part). When I spoke to the guy who was recording the show he said they would select 2 or 3 songs by each band (except Future Bible Heroes, he wasn't allowed to record that one), to complete two 30 minutes specials. The name of the radio show is "Viaje a los sueños polares" and it's run every Sunday from 22:00 to 24:00 (Spanish time) on "Los 40 Principales" radio. They haven't specified the time when they will broadcast it, though, so you'd have to listen to the whole show.

You can listen to it online at the radio's website:
http://www.40principales.com (choose the option: "Escúchanos")"

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 10 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you, Surf Fanny. I shall be standing by with a bucket of water for when the radio catches fire.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 10 October 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Despite my ISP's best attempts to deprive me of internet access, I managed to catch enough fragments of last night's broadcast to hear songs from The Would Be Goods, Montgolfier Brothers & Camera Obscura. (If Pipas were played I missed them.) So next week's show should include The Pines, Harvey Williams & The Clientele.

Thanks to Peter for tipping me off to the fact that Spanish time is an hour ahead of the UK. Last night's half hour started shortly after 10 pm UK time.

Fingers crossed that my ISP is more co-operative next Sunday!

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 14 October 2002 07:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried listening, but it was "too indie" to be stomached for very long, so I watched a documentary about some people in the Amazon who have poles shoved through their lower lips and their nobs bandaged up.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 14 October 2002 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

there is a dull new zealand band named pine, unfortunately david pine has nothing to do with it.

one year passes...
It's been too long since we had a Pines release.

Pines - 'Incurable' made me cry a little bit just now.

Some charlatans.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind them ripping us off - but to see that Mr Moore is collaborating too! - that's too much.

the pinefox, Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I look forward to The Complete Pine Family Sessions box set.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

It's been too long since we had a Pines release.

It's been too long since we completed a Pines recording project. There are more loose threads than at, like, the biggest - I mean, really the world championship or summat, in an aircraft hangar, just, y'know massive - sewing convention.

Blame the baby.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

jerry, i think i've heard that record! it was pretty pleasant considering how much i had drunk and thrown up before hearing it.
