We've had threads here devoted to the song itself and the album it comes from, but what about the promo clip folks?

For me the best part of the video is a tie between everything that Michael Anthony does vs. the guitar/keyboard solo where Eddie Van Halen spews out this hot solo and he's like "yeah man, I am totally playing this hot solo", and then it cuts to him doing the keyboard solo and he's all like "yeah man, I can totally play this hot keyboard part too".
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)
iirc chuck quoted rob sheffield in accidental evolution over the idea that this is a better van halen video than "right now" because it sells van halen, where right now, with a few tweaks, was used to sell crystal pepsi. i agree.
― da croupier, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 15:48 (twelve years ago)
I love his expression while playing the solo
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)
"I can play this keyboard like Valerie Bertinelli!"
i like how a lot of '80s rockers did performance videos in actual stadiums, and some just simulated it by stomping around a soundstage that looked like a venue (like that one Poison video) but in "Jump" they're totally just rocking out in a drab little room.
"Hot For Teacher" is obviously their video masterpiece though.
― some dude, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)
yeah and "panama"'s a classic too, but this is the most educational for bands today. only have yourselves, your instruments and a room? As long as every non-seated member mugs and dances (and you have a competent camera operator who knows how to catch the mugging and dancing and a competent editor who knows which bits of mugging and dancing to keep) you will either make the best video or the worst video
― da croupier, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG2b3VhSCC4
you can debate whether this files under best or worst but no clip they've made since has been as memorable
― da croupier, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)
what a coincidence! "jump" director david lee roth just posted a clip about "the language of video" on youtube!
2:30 in and he's talking about faking a british accent
― da croupier, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)
Not lip-syncing "Hey you!" so he can "respond" with "Who said that?" is genius.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 17:04 (twelve years ago)
And adding that one shout that isn't in the recorded so g.
― sandwich shortage (Eazy), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 17:21 (twelve years ago)
I like the part where they might as well jump.
― Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)
DLR fixing his hair at 0:17 or doing air splits at 1:17
best ever
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)
Oh shit! Never thought about that.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 18:33 (twelve years ago)
Is there even a bass on this song? Michael Anthony is one of those bassists who is always moving, but I can never quite jibe his motion with the notes.
I'm convinced this entire album was ghostwritten by some legally anonymous team of ringers.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)
Y'all are mostly pretty young whippersnappers but I remember the world premiere of this video, they made a pretty big deal out of it.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)
"Van Halen Goes New Wave!"
Was this before or after the infamous Lost Weekend with Van Halen promotion?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)
It was either Mark Richards or Martha Quinn and it may have been in tandem with some sort of awards show? Sorry, memories a little foggy, I'm a bit geriatric.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:05 (twelve years ago)
honestly "Jump" may be the earliest music video i can remember seeing, before even any Michael Jackson videos. either that or "Born In The USA."
― some dude, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:06 (twelve years ago)
Love Bruce, was totally the right age, but I somehow don't remember ever seeing the "BitUSA" video. "I'm On Fire," sure, "Dancing in the Dark" and "Glory Days," but not this one. Or "My Hometown," either. Was there a video for "I'm Going Down?"
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:09 (twelve years ago)
As great as this video is, I still can't think it's anything but a tribute to this even better video from a few years earlier:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGyOaCXr8Lw
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)
i like how alex is the only one who looks like he's trying hard instead of just having fun
― an eagle named "small government" (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:13 (twelve years ago)
Alex is definitely the stoic eye of the of the goofy early VH hurricane
― some dude, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:25 (twelve years ago)
he's like the anti-Ringo
Always found it amazing that such a leaden drummer could direct the occasional hyper-cool rhythmic turnaround like he does in the bridge here, or the one in "Unchained." My pal chalks it up to fraternal telepathy.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:38 (twelve years ago)
I first saw this when I was a little kid and it put me off Van Halen for a long time. I was like "who are all these old guys doing aerobics?"
― said the brohaim to the cochise (how's life), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:39 (twelve years ago)
I mean, they were all probably like 25, but Michael Anthony had a beard.

I remember this, too.
― Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)
Alex Van Halen's drumming is leaden?
― ThePartyHater (some dude), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 19:58 (twelve years ago)
Totally man. He's the least swinging, most plodding drummer, with moments of inspiration/syncopation. Perfect for VH, though.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:01 (twelve years ago)
he's not bringing the funk or anything but i feel like you're describing ac/dc or something more than vh
― ThePartyHater (some dude), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)
I'm not a huge Alex fan or anything, but "leaden" and "plodding" aren't terms I'd ascribe to his approach. In fact, I'd say he's downright sprightly.
And his snare sound cannot be fucked with.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)
as someone who is bored by most double bass pedal-abusing hard rock/metal drummers i am forever O_O at "Hot For Teacher"
― ThePartyHater (some dude), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, that song is awesome, and also literally unplayable as recorded.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)
yeah i've never heard them do it live so i dunno if him actually playing is nothing like that
― ThePartyHater (some dude), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:22 (twelve years ago)
When he does it live, he goes straight to the bass drum shuffle part, skipping all the crazy overdubbed stuff at the start. Fast forward to around 4:15 here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG-nntlGsIQ
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)
I suppose I should have guessed, but kinda disappointed to learn that was overdubbed
― Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:27 (twelve years ago)
What's fun is googling dudes trying to do it all, anyway. I remember reading that Stewart Copeland used to love checking out Police cover bands for their drummers, who try manically to cover what he did with all the overdubs with only four limbs. "Message in a Bottle," for example, is something like three drums parts.

When the video was first running on MTV, I remember that there wasn't any vocals here. DLR just turned around and opened his mouth while the solo went back into the verse.
They must've missed up the editing and had to get DLR to go back in to dub an artificial AYO-WO-WO.
― pplains, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 20:39 (twelve years ago)
The first time I saw the video/heard the song for Van Halen's "Jump", I was around eight years old. It was lunchtime, and I was eating pizza and drinking Pepsi. I thought the whole video/song was so ridiculous, and I just laughed so hard at it. I laughed so hard that Pepsi came out of my nose!
I feel like it is kind of a good song now though, sure.
― boy_slayer, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)
That's appropriate, given the amount of coke that's gone up DLR's nose.
― scattered to the nine vectors (snoball), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 21:02 (twelve years ago)
Classic.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 21:14 (twelve years ago)
Things I love about this video:
1) The fact that it looks like Alex has the Black Flag bars on his kick drum heads2) All the shots of Eddie playing guitar during parts that don't have guitar3) All the shots of Alex playing during the verses (which sound like drum machine, though that could just be '80s production)
― 誤訳侮辱, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)
That said, the greatest Van Halen video is clearly "Panama."

(2) damn is Michael Anthony out of shape

Not only that, but iirc the bass drums are electronic (Simmons) on 1984. Eddie and Ted Templeman had trouble getting the bass drum and tom sounds they wanted, so they went electronic on the bass drums and had Alex use rototoms.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 22:50 (twelve years ago)
The video is probably more funnier with the sound off!

DLR always makes me think of big-haired-Murphy-Brown-era Candice Bergen in this video. They look like they're having a laugh and it always makes me giggle. (Same with Start Me Up, too.) Classic.
― Kent Burt, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 23:05 (twelve years ago)
I'm gonna go ahead and say I think this is one of the greatest singles of all time.

I also agree!

Can't. It's a great video but I kinda hate it as a Van Halen song. :/
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 12 January 2013 23:28 (twelve years ago)
There was another 80s song with a weird bad edit:
At around 3:13 of ''Something About You,'' King just looks up in the camera and starts mouthing more words. But there are no words.
