The guy has done some good stuff: Counting, Sweetheart, that Vaporware thing with Bee Mask, there was one track off the s/t album I particularly liked but I can't remember which it was. Still feel he needs to level up and rebalance the style/substance ratio.

Think this was my favourite song on the album:

His style hasn't changed much since then, but "Counting" is def the best thing he's done imo.
― Vote in the ILM End of Year Poll! (seandalai), Tuesday, 8 January 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)
"Counting" bowled me over yesterday.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 8 January 2013 18:45 (twelve years ago)
first album was good, "counting" his best tune yet. really high hopes for this.
― monotony, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 08:38 (twelve years ago)
Debut album is my favorite album of the decade so far. Was completely won over from the acapella break in Tell Me. Two Days of Rain, Drama Cum Drama, OMG, Demoneyez, pop masterpiece after pop masterpiece. The EP was fine as well, really looking forward to the new album. The dude can SING, and yet he's not afraid to obscure his voice with filters and effects when it works (like in that video above from 3:20-3:25. LOVE that detail)

...And here we have "Play by Play."
It'll take some time to digest, but right now it's hard to tell if this beats "Counting."
It doesn't have the complexity, but the second half of the song really brings home the euphoria.
― InteractiveBread, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 21:59 (twelve years ago)
this thread has probably the worst opening post in ilm history
― d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)
After the first listen, I want so bad to shout along to that chorus with a room full of strangerS.
.......PLAY BY PLAY BY PLAY, DON'T EVER LEAVE ME ALONE!.......PLAY BY PLAY BY PLAY, DON'T EVER LEAVE ME ALONE!.......PLAY BY PLAY BY PLAY, DON'T EVER LEAVE ME ALONE!.......PLAY BY PLAY BY PLAY, DON'T EVER LEAVE ME ALONE!
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:00 (twelve years ago)
Here's hoping that other people at his live shows feel the same way.
― InteractiveBread, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:15 (twelve years ago)
Doesn't have Counting's instant impact but time will tell I guess.
― questino (seandalai), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:17 (twelve years ago)
Play by play and counting are track 1 and 2 on the new record. I think we've found the 1-2 punch of the year already.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:27 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, both tracks are killer imo.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)
i like both tracks a lot but they're a little messy. the mykki blanco verse on "counting" is so unnecessary. this one has... like... too much going on.
there are some moments where it hints at a really great epic ballad type song. there's this fantastic buildup around the 2 minute mark that makes me think of the huge moments leading up the "climax" bridge. but then it just gets muddled. i would have liked for the chorus to be more, like, triumphant.
i would actually say that this song is more ~~complex~~ than "counting", but that's not necessarily a good thing. i like the pop appeal of counting. "play by play" tries for too much imo
― cocktail onion (fennel cartwright), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 02:52 (twelve years ago)
seriously this new song
the first half seems frantic, as if he's standing over a cauldron throwing ingredients in it almost at random, and then suddenly by 2:40 or whatever he's created a concoction of wondrous ecstacy
― monotony, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:56 (twelve years ago)
"I just call you up to get that play by play, by play, by play..." has evicted random Ima Read lyrics as the lines that swirl around in my head every morning..."Play By Play" has definitely grown on my but I think it starts to drag after three minutes or so when it goes into the extended "play by play..." part.
― questino (seandalai), Friday, 1 February 2013 01:28 (twelve years ago)
I think it starts to drag after three minutes or so when it goes into the extended "play by play..." part.
nooooo this is the best bit! it's like turning a corner into a vast amazing expanse after navigating the choppiness of the first few minutes. a rewarding climax
― monotony, Friday, 1 February 2013 01:42 (twelve years ago)
Dunno, I think his strength lies in the smoke and mirrors stuff - the build from around 2:00 to 3:00 is my favourite minute of music so far this year. But after the big reveal/release he goes all in on one single big pop move and I don't think the hook is strong enough to bear two minutes of repetition.
― questino (seandalai), Saturday, 2 February 2013 01:12 (twelve years ago)
I don't think the hook is strong enough to bear two minutes of repetition.
I've only played it a couple times to date, but the repeating hook worked like a charm for me. Get back to me after I've heard it another 10 or 20 times.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 2 February 2013 01:17 (twelve years ago)

― johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 February 2013 23:44 (twelve years ago)
a bunch of really good sounds on this record but it seems like a bit of a mess overall - like there's too much going on and his solution to stuff not quite working is to pile more stuff in
― lex pretend, Monday, 11 February 2013 11:06 (twelve years ago)
some of the songs are soooooo aimless as well
what is this "world war" shit
― lex pretend, Monday, 11 February 2013 11:10 (twelve years ago)
Well 'too much going on' is one of the defining characteristics of autre ne veut, and definitely one of the things I love most about him. As is messiness, soundwise, emotionally, etc. If anything, there is too little going on on a few of the tracks, imo. But it's great, all in all.
― Frederik B, Monday, 11 February 2013 13:38 (twelve years ago)
I'm not sure if I have a very technical explanation for myself, but I don't think he's a very good singer. The comparisons I saw on the track review on Pitchfork to Usher and Prince seemed wild and outlandish to me. I think that Tom Krell from How to dress well sings circles around him, and that guy's certainly no Prince. The production is certainly more witch housey and interesting than the Body EP's, but his singing is very distracting for me.
― BMICHAEL, Monday, 11 February 2013 13:50 (twelve years ago)
I really like how he uses his voice on a track like Gonna Die. The distorted backing voices and the reverb, the way voices cut in and out, his crazy falsetto in the end.
But nothing is as great as Play by Play.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 12:51 (twelve years ago)
too bad about this guy putting his two bangers 1-2
― d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)

― lex pretend, Wednesday, 13 February 2013 18:15 (twelve years ago)

― d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 13 February 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)

― queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:02 (twelve years ago)
It does if you were expecting more songs rivaling the first two in greatness. It's a good album, but those two songs are clearly the high points.

― queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Tuesday, February 19, 2013 4:02 PM (5 minutes ago) Bookmark
i dunno. it matters in any year where you're listening to an album front to back.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)
i mean, it matters to me, but i'm old.
trying to figure out why this record feels sort of oppressive and busy even in moments of relative sparseness...i think it's the way he sings + aggressive mastering.
― queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)
yeah otm about the mastering
he can sing but it's pretty one-dimensional, kinda like the stereotype of what ~the emotional r&b voice~ is applied to every line of every song
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)
i don't really like the concept of moments being "earned" but there's something about the structure of "play by play" that bothers me. the main hook that he repeats for 3 minutes is pretty great but it just feels like he blasts there really early without trying to properly build to it. for a track that's supposed to hit like i assume he wants it to, it feels very pro-forma.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 February 2013 21:32 (twelve years ago)
the main hook that he repeats for 3 minutes is pretty great but it just feels like he blasts there really early without trying to properly build to it

"ego free/sex free" is great. "play by play" is much better live.
i wonder if some people are reacting against the production occupying a middle ground between more witchy stuff and actual radio gloss, without slotting comfortably into either.

i don't understand what this guy has to do with salem. reviving this thread to say that he is great. the best thing he's done is still the song sweetheart. i listened to that on repeat one day in fall 2011 while sitting in the public library because it made me feel like things were going to change; that i was on the precipice of a new beginning in my life. this turned out to not be true, but still, classic track: exhilarating, soulful, a unique twist on dreampop i think. the pulsing, swirling, synth background noise reminds me of my bloody valentine because it creates an effect that it manages to be expansive and claustrophobic at the same time. i want to sing along with it in the car but i can't, really.
